Recently, to avoid global warming, reduction of $CO_2$ generation has been demanded. Each car manufacture takes positive actions for improvement in fuel consumption by various kinds of countermeasures, e.g. improving engine efficiency, using alternative fuels, lightening the car body. Regarding lightening of the car body, aluminum alloys and high tensile strength steels has been gradually adopted as lightweight materials. However, such materials are normally not easy to be treated with zinc phosphate system. Focusing the pre-treatment processes, low temperature phosphate system could be demanded for energy saving. This time, new surface conditioning process for lightweight materials and low temperature phosphate system shall be discussed.
O,O-Dimethyl-S-(phthalimido)methylphosphorodithioate (PMP) is changed into phosphine, phosphate, and phosphorothioate, when it is treated with metallic zinc in acidic medium after alkaline hydrolysis. The amount of phosphine evolved is about five times as much in sulfuric acid medium as it is in hydrochloric acid. When one micro mole of hydrolyzed PMP is treated with 8 grams of metallic zinc and 30 ml of 10 N-sulfuric acid, it is changed into 0.42 micro moles of phosphine, 0.14 micro moles of phosphorothioate, and 0.44 micro moles of phosphate.

Steel used for various industrial fields including ammunition is vulnerable to corrosion so surface treatments are required such as plating, painting and chemical conversion coating. Zinc phosphate, used for ammunition manufacturing, is used to stick the stable compound on the surface by chemical conversion of metal. The quality of phosphate coating depends on many factors such as total acidity and iron content. In this study, we studied the influence of total acidity and iron content on coating weight and corrosion resistance of phosphate coating. The surface structure of the coating becomes dense and corrosion resistance is improved with increasing iron content. However, total acidity influences only the thickness and phosphate coating weight. In conclusion, this study suggests the optimal range of total acidity and iron content to manufacture the ammunition.
An in vitro study was conducted to compare the bond strength of cements between Verabond coping and various cores. Fifty-four idential cores simulating maxillary central incisor prepared for PFM crowns were made. Eighteen samples were made with 20K cast gold, eighteen with Verabond, and eighteen with Adaptic. Samples were randomly divided into three groups, each consisting of six 20K cast gold, six verabond, and six Adaptic samples. The first group was cemented with zinc phosphate cement, the second group with poly-carboxylate cement, and the third group with glass ionomer cement. Constant finger pressure was applied for cementation. The sample were then stored at $37^{\circ}C$ in distilled water bath for 24 hours. The tensile strength test was performed on an Instron Universal test machine with crosshead speed of 0.05cm/min and the results compared statistically. Results of the study showed that: 1. A significant difference of bond strength was observed with different types of dental cements and core materials. 2. With gold core, zinc phosphate cement was stronger than both the polycarboxylate cement and glass ionomer cement, which did not differ in bond strength. 3. With base-metal core, zinc phosphate cement showed the highest bond strength and was followed by polycarboxylate cement and glass ionomer cement. 4. With composite resin core, zinc phosphate cement showed the highest bond strength and was followed by glass ionomer cement and polycarboxylate cement. 5. The base-metal core (Verabond core) privided the highest retention of all core materials.
The difficulty of endodontic retreatment depends on various factors and it is affected by retention of post. In this experiment, root canal therapy was done in extracted human teeth and cut into 10mm length from the root apex, and then cemented by zinc phosphate cement, Vitremer$^{(R)}$(glass ionomer) luting cement and Panavia 21$^{(R)}$(resin cement). Post preparation was done by #4 Parapost drill at 6mm length and cement was inserted by lentulo spiral. After 24 hours, tensile bond strength, post removal time was measured after the ultrasonic application and the separation site was measured. The following results were obtained. 1. In measuring tensile bond strength, there is no statistical difference between zinc phosphate cement and Panavia 21$^{(R)}$, but Vitremer$^{(R)}$ showed lower value compared with those two cements. (p<0.001) 2. When the post removal time was measured after ultrasonic application, significant different value in order of Panavia 21$^{(R)}$, zinc phosphate cement and Vitremer$^{(R)}$ was shown. (p<0.001) 3. As a result of examining the separating site of each cement, all 16 of zinc phosphate cement group showed the fracture site between cement and post, Vitremer$^{(R)}$ was 13/16, and Panavia 2$^{(R)}$ was 8/16. In case of tooth restoration using Parapost, the use of Panavia 21 showed good retention property than Vitremer$^{(R)}$, but when retreatment is needed the difficulty of post removal will be increased.
PURPOSE. This in vitro study evaluated the effects of four different cements on the color attributes of a zirconia ceramic. MATERIALS AND METHODS. 40 zirconia ceramic disk specimens (0.5 mm thickness, 10 mm diameter, 0.1 mm cement space) were fabricated by a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing system. The specimens were divided into 4 groups of 10 specimens and cemented to composite substrates using four different cements including: Glass Ionomer, Panavia F2.0, Zinc Phosphate, and TempBond. The $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$ color attributes of the specimens were measured before and after cementation by a spectrophotometer. Additionally, ${\Delta}E$ values were measured to determine color changes for the groups and then compared with the perceptional threshold of ${\Delta}E=3.3$. Repeated Measures ANOVA, Tukey Post Hoc, Bonferroni, One-way ANOVA, and One-sample t-test tests were used to analyze the data. All tests were carried out at the 0.05 level of significance. RESULTS. Statistically significant differences were detected in the ${\Delta}E$ values for Zinc Phosphate (P<.0001) and TempBond (P<.0001) groups. However, there were no statistically significant differences in this respect for Glass Ionomer (P=.99) and Panavia F2.0 (P=1) groups. The means and standard deviations of the ${\Delta}E$ values for Glass Ionomer, Panavia F2.0, Zinc Phosphate, and Tempbond groups were $2.11{\pm}0.66$, $0.94{\pm}0.39$, $5.77{\pm}0.83$, and $7.50{\pm}1.16$ Unit, respectively. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of this study, it was concluded that Zinc Phosphate and Tempbond cements affected the color attributes of the tested zirconia ceramic beyond the perceptional threshold. However, Glass Ionomer and Panavia F2.0 cements created acceptable color changes.
The separation of gallium and indium from the matrix elements such as zinc and other ions, especially form Fe(III) ion was studied for the determination of trace level of them in zinc ores and zinc blendes by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry(ICP-AES). Gallium and indium were extracted from the sample solution with a solvent of tributyl phosphate(TBP). The type and concentration of acid, interferences of other ions, the ratio of aqueous phase to organic phase, TBP concentration, sripping efficiency were optimized for the effective extraction. Gallium and indium were separated from other ions in the 5N hydrochloric acid solution of the samples by the extraction with 100% TBP. In this time, Fe(III) was reduced to Fe(II) with hydroxylamine hydrochloride to prevent its coextraction prior to the main extraxtion. After stripped from organic phase by the back-extraction with 0.02N HCl, they were determined in the aqueous phase by ICP-AES. This method was known to be quantitative from the overall extraction of more than 95%.

Magnesium alloys exhibit many attractive properties such as low density, high strength/weight ratio, high thermal conductivity, very good electromagnetic features and good recyclability. However, most commercial magnesium alloys require protective coatings because of their poor corrosion resistance. Attempts have been made to improve the corrosion resistance of the Mg alloys by surface treatments, such as chemical conversion coatings, anodizing, plating and metal coatings, are commonly applied to magnesium alloys in order to increase the corrosion resistance. Among them, chemical conversion coatings are regarded as one of the most effective and cheapest ways to prevent corrosion resistance. In this study, zinc phosphate conversion coatings on various Mg alloys have been developed by selecting proper phosphating bath composition and concentration and by optimizing phosphating time, temperature. Morphology, coatings composition, corrosion resistance, adhesion and its formation and growth mechanism of the zinc phosphate conversion coatings were studied. Results have shown some attractive properties such as simplicity in operation, significantly increased corrosion protective property. However, adhesions between coatings and substrate and also between coatings and paint are still not satisfied. Resolving the problems and understanding the mechanism of phosphating process are targets of our study.
Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM) examination on the labial surface of 91 permanent upper incisors were made after etching procedure with phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, hydro chloric acid, oxalic acid, formic acid, citric acid and zinc phosphate liquid for 2 minutes. Following results were obtained. 1. In the surfaces etched by 10%. 50% phosphoric acid, 50% sulfuric acid, 10%. 30% nitric acid, 10%. 50% oxalic acid, 10%. 30%. 50% formic acid, 30%. 50% citric acid and zinc phosphate liquid, there appeared to be a preferential removal of prism cores, but in the surfaces etched by 10% phosphoric acid, 50% nitric acid, 10%. 30% hydrochloric acid and 30% oxalic acid, the prism peripheries were removed preferentially. 2. According to Silverstone classification on enamel etching pattern the surface treated by zinc phosphate liquid, 30. 50% citric acid, 10%. 30%. 50% formic acid, 10%. 50% oxalic acid, 10%. 30% nitric acid, 50% sulfuric acid and 10%. 50%. phosphoric acid showed Type 1, and etched by 30% oxalic acid, 10%. 30% hydrochloric acid, 50% nitric acid and 10% phosphoric acid showed Type II. Etching of prism cores was by far the most common occurence. The changes produced could be related to intrinsic differences in histology and / or solubility of enamel.
