Rheological properties of chitosan solutions were investigated as a function of polymer concentration. The viscosity curves for chitosan solutions consisted of two distinct viscosity regions, the Newtonian zero-shear viscosity (η$_{0}$) region and the shear rate dependent apparent viscosity (η$_{app}$) region. The shear rate dependence of viscosity was more clearly observed at higher chitosan concentrations. The critical coil overlap parameter (C*〔η〕) was determined to be approximately 3.2 from a plot of zero-shear specific viscosity η$_{sp,0}$ vs coil overlap parameter (C〔η〕), which was lower than C〔η〕4.0 reported for other random coil polysaccharides. It was also found that the slope of η$_{sp,0}$ vs C〔η〕 was 3.9 at concentrated C〔η〕>C*〔η〕domain, while 1.2 at dilute C〔η〕$_{0}$ ${\gamma}$/${\gamma}$$_{0.8}$ relation.ion.n.n.
The thermophysical properties of Non-Newtonian fluid as the function of the temperature and the concentration are needed in many rheological heat transfer and fluid mechanics problems. The present work investigated the effects of the concentration and the temperature on the thermophysical properties of purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluids such as the isobaric thermal expansion coefficient, density, zero-shear-rate viscosity, and zero-shear-rate dynamic viscosity within the experimental temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $55^{\circ}C$. The densities of the test fluids were determined as the function of the temperature by utilizing a reference density and the least square equation for the measured isobaric thermal expansion coefficient. As the concentration of purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluid was increased up to 10,000 wppm, the densities were proportionally increased up to 0.4%. The zero-shear-rate viscosities of test fluids were measured before and after the measurements of the first thermal expansion coefficients and the densities of Non-Newtonian fluid. Even though they were changed up to approximately 22% due to thermal aging and cycling, they had no effects on the thermal expansion coefficients and the densities of Non-Newtonian fluid. The zero-shear-rate dynamic viscosities for purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluids were compared with the values for distilled water. They showed the similar trend with the zero-shear-rate viscosities due to small differences in the densities for both distilled water and purely-viscous Non-Newtonian fluid.
Glucomannan(G.M.) 이 G.M. Low shear viscometer로 G.M.
In this research, experimental studies were performed to examine the rheological behavior of equimolar solutions of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPyCl) and sodium salicylate (NaSal) solutions with concentration. The surfactant solutions were prepared by dissolving 2 mM/2 mM - 80 mM/80 mM of surfactant/counterion in double-distilled water. It has been observed that the zero shear viscosity shows abrupt changes at two critical values of C^*$ and C^{**}$. These changes are caused by the switching of relaxation mechanism with concentration of CPyCl/NaSal solutions at those concentrations. The wall slip velocities of dilute and semidilute CPyCl/NaSal solutions show a dramatic increase with shear rate where the shear viscosity exhibits shear thickening behavior for dilute solutions and shear thinning behavior for semi-dilute solutions, respectively. Considering that the dramatic increase in wall slip velocity should be related to the formation of shear-induced structure (SIS) in the surfactant solution, the shear thickening behavior of semi-dilute solutions is caused by elastic instability unlike the case of dilute solutions.
For the effective treatment of aphthous stomatitis, the matrix type mucoadhesive patches containing triamcinolone acetonide have been formulated. The drug layer was obtained by drying the polymer gel which was prepared with carbomer 934P, ammoniomethacrylate copolymer, titanium dioxide and polyethylene glycol 400. The effects of the content of additives on physical characteristics of the polymer gel and the drug layer were evaluated. The addition of carbomer increased the yield point and the zero-shear viscosity of polymer gel as well as the thickness, the water absorption ratio, the adhesive time and $T_{50%}$ of drug layer. The adhesive time and the water absorption ratio of drug layer were also improved by the addition of ammoniomethacrylate copolymer, but the addition of titanium dioxide had decreased the zero-shear viscosity of polymer gel and the adhesive time of drug layer.
The present study proposes modified temperature-dependent non-Newtonian viscosity model and investigates flow characters and heat transfer enhancement of the viscoelastic non-Newtonian fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct. The proposed modified temperature dependent viscosity model has non-zero value near the high temperature and high shear rate region while on the existing viscosity models have zero value. Two versions of thermal boundary conditions involving difference combination of heated walls and adiabatic walls are analyzed in this study. The combined effect of temperature dependent viscosity, buoyancy, and secondary flow caused by second normal stress difference are ail considered. The Reiner-Rivlin model is adopted as a viscoelastic fluid model to simulate the secondary flow caused by second normal stress difference. Calculated Nusselt numbers by the modified temperature-dependent viscosity model gives under prediction than the existing temperature-dependent viscosity model in the regions of thermally developed with same secondary normal stress difference coefficients with experimental results in the regions of thermally developed. The heat transfer enhancement of the viscoelastic fluid in a 2:1 rectangular duct is highly dependent on the secondary flow caused by the magnitude of second normal stress difference.
Characterizing the extensional rheological properties of non-Newtonian fluids is crucial in many industrial processes, such as inkjet printing, injection molding, and fiber engineering. However, educational institutions and research laboratories with budget constraints have limited access to an expensive commercial extensional rheometer. In this study, we developed a custom-made extensional rheometer using a CO2 laser cutting machine and 3D printer. Furthermore, we utilized a smartphone with a low-cost microscopic lens for achieving a high spatial resolution of images. The aqueous polyethylene-oxide (PEO) solutions and a Boger fluid were prepared to characterize their extensional properties. A transition from a visco-capillary to an elasto-capillary regime was observed clearly through the developed rheometer. The extensional relaxation time and viscosity of the aqueous PEO solutions with a zero-shear viscosity of over 300 mPa·s could be quantified in the elasto-capillary regime. The extensional properties of the solutions with relatively small zero shear viscosity could be calculated using a smartphone's slow-motion feature with increasing temporal resolution of the images.
