A molecular phylogenetic relationship inferred from mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence was developed based on analysis of Zacco species distributed in Korea as well as China, Japan and Taiwan. A maximum parsimony (MP) tree showed that Korean Z. temminckii and Z. koreanus formed a monophyletic clade, but the populations of Z. temminckii and Z. koreanus in the 'South Korean Subdistrict' region had genetic similarity with Japanese Z. temminckii. Korean Z. platypus had a closer relationship with Japanese members of the clade than with Chinese Z. platypus, which was more closely related to Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis. The analysis of neighbor joining (NJ) tree may support a hypothesis that the clade of Z. platypus had genetically diverged from the common ancestor of Zacco species comprising Z. koreanus, Z. temminckii, Z. sieboldii and other species; thereafter a cladogenesis of Z. koreanus and Z. temmminckii had occurred from the ancestor of Z. sieboldii. Moreover, the Chinese Z. platypus had diverged far from the Korean Z. platypus and formed a phylogenetic relationship with O. uncirostris amurensis. Therefore, a more detailed study of the taxonomy and systematics of Zacco species in regard to their zoogeographical distributions is needed.
The egg and larval development of pale chub, Zacco platypus were determined by observation of laboratory reared larvae from hatching. The experimental adult fish were collected in Wicheon of Nakdong river in June 2016, The eggs and larvae were reared in the experimental tanks, and observed their morphological change. The egg diameter ranged from 1.68 to 1.78 mm ($mean{\pm}SD$, $1.73{\pm}0.07mm$, n =30). The eggs were hatch 70 hours after fertilization. The total length (TL) of the newly hatched larvae ranged from 5.39 to 5.42 mm ($5.40{\pm}0.02mm$, n=10). On the 8 days after hatching, 10 fin rays were formed in caudal fin at 7.89~7.93 mm TL ($7.91{\pm}0.02mm$, n=10). On the 44 days after hatching, the juveniles ranged from 16.1~16.5 mm TL ($16.3{\pm}0.28mm$, n=10).
This study was carried out to produce the seedling of the larvae and juveniles of pale chup, Zacco platypus (Cyprinidae) in terms of artificial hatching, feeding behavior and growth rates. The total lengths of the newly hatched larvae were 7.6~8.2mm (mean: 7.97mm). The hatched larvae rose to the surface 3 days after hatching. The larvae were fed Daphnia, rotifer, Artemia and powdered feed. Hatching experiments were conducted in jar incubators under the different water temperature conditions, $20~32^{\circ}C$. The highest hatching rate was at $26^{\circ}C$ after 47 hours. Jar incubators was the highest hatching rate (89%), and cage and Californian incubators were useful and relatively high hatching rates (>89%). The size of the larvae 50 days after hatching were 30.0mm (25.6~32.0mm). As the water temperatures was increased, the growth rate of the larvae was also increased. Especially, the growth rates were favorable over $26^{\circ}C$, but survival was the worst at $32^{\circ}C$. This species was quick to accept assorted feed after hatching. The assorted feeds for flounder and rockfish better than that of carp in reference to growth rate.
We researched the reproductive ecology of pale chub, Zacco platypus that inhabits Gajeong-cheon and Wonju-cheon that are a tributary to the Han river. The nuptial organ was formed on the head part, the anal fin and the tail part in male, the change of nuptial color was outstanding. By their changing body shape, the anal fin was extended and body depth came to be high during the spawning season in both sexes. Territorial male of defending behavior were head butting, rotated fighting, parallel swimming, biting and expelling. After pale chub located himself from the upper of the female that was approached to the side parallelling with the female, male and female spawned digging sand with their anal fin by vibrating and any parental care of the eggs was not taken. The spawning interval and lasting time were relevant to individuals density of spawning ground.

The objectives of this study were to assess physical habitat suitability of fish species for different life cycle stages and to suggest appropriate ecological stream flows in a Bokha downstream reach. A dominant species of Zacco platypus was selected as the study fish of which three stages of spawning, juvenile and adult in life cycle were considered into assessment. The stream hydraulic environment was calibrated with HEC-RAS before the PHABSIM simulation. The hydraulics of flow velocity and depth were used to estimate Weighted Usable Area (WUA) by multiplying respective habitat suitability indices with stream area. Overall the WUAs tend to be great in gentle slopes with relatively shallow water depth regions. Maximum WUAs, ie, candidate for ecological flow rates were 1 m3/s, 7 m3/s and 8 m3/s for the respective spawning, juvenile and adult stages of Zacco platypus. Since the ecological flow rates for juvenile and adult stages appeared to be is greater than the abundant flow rate (3.67 m3/s) for the study reach, additional water supply may be needed but should be cautious to avoid the spawning period of Apr through May from the stream water management perspective.

The conservation of stream habitats has been gaining more public attention and fish habitat suitability index (HSI) is an important measure for ecological stream habitat assessment. The fish habitat preference is affected not only by physical stream conditions but also by water quality of which HSI was not available due to the lack of field data. The purpose of this study is to estimate the HSI of Zacco platypus for water quality parameters of water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) using the water environment monitoring data provided by the Ministry of Environment (ME). Fish population data merged with water quality were constructed by spatio-temporal matching of nationwide water quality monitoring data with bio-monitoring data of the ME. Two types of the HSI were calculated by the Instream Flow and Aquatic Systems Group (IFASG) method and probability distribution (Weibull) fitting for the four major river basins. Both the HSIs by the IFASG and Weibull fitting appeared to represent the overall distribution and magnitude of fish population and this can be used in stream fish habitat evaluation considering water quality.
The present study aimed to assess the longitudinal connectivity owing to migrant characteristics of the target fish. The study area was Wonju-cheon Stream, and the target species were Zacco platypus and Minnows. The HEC-RAS model was used for the computation of the flow, and the ICE (Information sur la Continuite Ecologique) method was used to analyze the longitudinal connectivity. The longitudinal connectivity was assessed using the minimum overflow height, velocity, and depth of the cross sectional structure of a plunge pool and considering the swimming speed of the target fish. Simulation results indicated that the longitudinal connectivity scores for the Zacco platypus and Minnows were approximately 76 and 23, respectively.
The pale chub (Zacco platypus) is generally found in Asian countries, such as Korea, Japan, and China. Nevertheless, very little information exists about the genes involved in the metabolism of xenobiotics in this species. This species is useful in monitoring the environmental impact on various pollutants in freshwater as a sentinel fish species. We cloned the full-length cDNA sequence of xenobiotic metabolizing cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A) gene from Z. platypus and characterized it. Tissue distribution and timedependent induction of CYP1A were studied by real-time RT-PCR. Induction pattern of CYP1A was studied by exposing the fish to an arylhydrocarbon receptor agonist, ${\beta}$-naphthoflavone (BNF). The liver showed the highest level of expression in basal state as well as BNF- treated fish. However, appreciable levels of expression were also recorded in Gill and kidney and the least level of expression was observed in the eye. The results of the time-course study revealed an induction in the liver, brain, and gills after 6 h and 12 h in most of the tissues. This study provides an insight into the xenobiotics metabolizing system of Z. platypus and offers baseline information for further research related to biomarker, stress, and adaptive response of this ecologically important fish species in the freshwater environment.

As fish communities are sensitive to natural environmental changes as well as anthropogenic pressures, their composition and characteristics help us to assess the aquatic ecosystem health. The fish fauna and the length-weight relationship of Zacco platypus in the Seomjin River system were investigated from July 2018 to May 2019. The collected species during the survey period were 49 species belong to 14 families including 19 Korean endemic and two endangered species. According to Bray-Curtis similarities, 14 sites were divided into four groups based on the fish community composition; two groups(group A, B) and two uncategorized sites(group C, D). There were significant differences between groups A and B(analysis of similarities, R=0.722, p=0.002). A similarity percentage analysis revealed that Z. koreanus(8.55%), Micropterus salmoides(6.90%), and Lepomis macrochirus (4.90%) contributed to these differences of fish assemblages between group A and B. Group A showed higher relative abundances of exotic species such as M. salmoides and L. macrochirus, while Z. platypus and Z. koreanus which are the common species in Korea, were the most dominant species in group B. Based on the length-weight relationship of Z. platypus, b values were varied from 2.82 to 3.80, indicating that growth patterns of the species were spatially different. This study could be served as baseline data for understanding fish fauna, assessing habitat characteristics based on the fauna, and identifying health conditions of Z. platypus in the Seomjin River system.
The ichthyofauna and the structure of fish community were surveyed from August 1995 to October 1997 at twenty one stations in the Wicheon river which is a first tributary located at the middle reach of the Nakdong river system. During the surveyed period, 40 species belonging to ten families were collected. Of them cyprinid fish occupied 65.0% (26 species) and cobitid fish 12.5% (5 species). Sixteen species (40.0%) were known as Korean endemic species. Dominant species were Zacco temmincki (15.35%), Zacco platypus (14.12%), and Squalidus gracilis majimae (11.32%). Rare species which occupied less than 0.1% of total individuals were Cyprinus carpio, Culter brevicauda, Misgurnus mizoiepis, Cobitis rotundicaudata, Leiocassis ussuriensis, Silurus asotus, Macropodus chinensis, and Channa argus. A tendancy were shown in regional distribution that Moroco oxycephalus dominated in upper stream, Zacco temmincki, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Niwaella multifasciata in mid - upper stream, acheilognathid fishes and Zacco temmincki in mid - lower stream, and Zacco platypus and microphysogobioid fishes in lower stream. St. 9, 10, and 11 which located in mid - reach of main stream and St. 17, 18 and 19 which located in mid - reach of the Ssanggye stream had the most stable and diverse community structure.
