  • Objectives: Following the Jin Yuan Dynasty, the Ming and Song Dynasties witnessed a great development of Yunqi xue. A study into this development has a vast significance in studying the history of the development of traditional Chinese medicine. Methods: The contents relating to Yunqi within the Comprehensive Medical Books, published during the Ming period, and medical texts separately published specifically dealing with Yunqi were used in order to review the unique characters of the study of Yunqi during this period. Results: There were many cases in the comprehensive medical books during the Ming period that dealt with Yunqi. Some of the examples are: Yunqilu in Yixueliuyao, YunQiZongLun in Yixuerumen, and Yunqilu in Yixueliuyao. A number of books that followed suit from the previous generation's study were published, the examples of which are Wangji's Yunqiyilan, and ZhangJiebin's LeiJingtuyi. WangJi, in his book, opposed the mechanic utilization of YunQi theory, and advocated the flexible application of the theory at the doctor's discretion. Liwei, in his YunQiZongLun, wrote a great deal of knowledge which he gained based on the previous-generation medical masters' achievements. Conclusions: Yunqi became widely accepted during the Ming period which led to some doctors advocating the flexible application of the YunQi theory, and some doctors even completely denouncing Yunqi.

  • Objectives: The three nations of far Northeastern Asia, namely China, Korea, and Japan, have developed a tradition of Asian medicine within a common cultural realm. Studying Japan's Yunqi not only helps our understanding of Japanese traditional medicine, but the course of development taken by the three nations' traditional Asian medicine as a whole. Methods: All books relating to Yunqi published in Japan were studied, with special focus on books that are especially more important. Results: It is assumed that Japan's first book on Yunqi is 吉田宗桂's Ungiileonjib. The Japanese mainstream study on Yunqi is the annotations and studies on Suwenrushiyungilunao, written by Liuwenshu. YunQiLunAoKouYiis the first annotation on Suwenrushiyungilunao and had the greatest impact. Yunqilunjujie is an annotation book written by a Confucian scholar, and Yunqilunaoshuchao an annotation book composed by a Confucian doctor who was a thorough expert on sinology and the annotations ranged greatly from medical books, Confucian books, historical books and hundred schools of books. Aotouyunqilun is the most slight in terms of annotations compared to other annotation books, and Yunqilunaoyanjie is special in that it writes with both Chinese characters and Japanese language in order to help easier understanding by the novice scholars. Conclusions: Suwenrushiyunqilunao includes astronomy, geography, delivery sound, calendar, the eight trigrams, the Twelve laws, Shier chen, Constellation of twenty eight, Thirty-six birds, and secret days, which is leading to further study in these fields. Suwenrushiyunqilunao also contains excerpts from Suwen Liujiecangxianglun to describe the algorithm of the operation of Sun and Moon, which is also leading a further study in the field.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning and the yin-yang properties of the six qi and the three yin and three yang as well as to understand the relationship between the six qi and the three yin and three yang. Methods : As the concept of six qi is the six climatic influences after all, I tried to grasp the yin and yang properties of the six qi on the basis of the meteorology and Yun Qi theory. Based on this I studied the concept and properties of the three yin and three yang. Results and Conclusions: (1) Among the six qi, cold and heat refer to temperature, dryness and dampness to humidity, and wind and ministerial fire to atmospheric pressure. Wind is an ascending air current while ministerial fire is a descending air current. Therefore, wind, heat, and dampness are the yang, and ministerial fire, dryness, and cold are the yin. (2) Three yin and three yang represent changes of ying and yang of all things following six qi changes. Simple deviation of qi can be described by yin and yang, but consequent changes in form required further developed concepts of three yin and three yang. In other words, the changes of the form caused by wind, heat, and dampness are namely reverting yin, lesser yin, and greater yin respectively, while the changes of the form caused by ministerial fire, dryness, and cold are expressed as lesser yang, yang brightness, and greater yang respectively.

  • In the field of the theory about constitution(體質), the theory of 'Yun Qi(運氣) has close relations hip with the formation of theory of constitution. It is seen in the chapter 'Osangjungdae-ron("五常政大論")' that the theory of influenced the theory of constitution and talent by the 'Concept of Evaporation(氣化)'. In the chapter 'Yin-Yang twenty five men types' of the book the 'Ling Shu("靈樞")' the twenty five constitution types by the theory of 'Yan Qi is stated. And in the book 'Nei Ching("內經")' the constitution types of five elements' motion is described. In the theory of the 'five elements' motion and six kinds of natural factors' had such a problem that the individuals having the same born year and Qi had the same prescriptions irrespective of each other's constitution. So for the resolution of this problem the constitution theory of 'Yun Qi' had been formed by the mediation of the 'MyengRiHak(命理學)' and the theory of 'Yun Qi' in the book the 'OUnYukKiHanYeHakBoGam("五運六氣韓醫學寶鑑")'. But following problems should be resolved in chrono-inedieine. Those are the difference of men who has born in some year-day-time, each 'Yun Qi's brea king point, local time, summer time, living circumstances, twins, the concept of 'Zhung Won(中元)', etc.

  • Objectives: The Qing Dynasty experienced a development in Yunqi even greater than in the Ming Dynasty. Popularization and universalization of Yunqi theory led to many books on the subject published, especially with weights on Warm Heat Disease and Pestilence, also giving birth to new Yunqi theories. A study into this development has a great significance in the study of the traditional medicine in Qing. Methods: The paper studies the Yunqi books published in the Qing dynasty to find out the unique characters of those books. To understand the direction which the Yunqi theory in the Qing period took, the paper also reviewed the positions of different groups, those who were favorable, those who compromised, and those who were unfavorable. Results: Four directions were taken by the study of Yunqi in the Qing period. First is the systemic study and composition of Neijing's chapter of Yunqi. This direction was taken by Liumaoxiu's NeiJingYunQiBingShi) and $N{\grave{e}}ijingyunqibiao$, Xuefuchen's Suwenyunqitushuo, Zhuenhua's Suwenyunqiqianshuo, an unknown person's Su wen yunqi chao, Weigeliu's Neijingqihuapian. The second direction is the study of Yunqi in relation with the Warm Heat Disease and Pestilence, which was taken by Mayin lin's Wuyunliuqiwenyifayuan, Lumaoxiu's Suwenyipianbìngshi, Litianchi's Shiyiwenbingqìyunzhengyan lun, and Wangxun's Cihangsanyuanfujifang. The third direction deals with a new Yunqi theory. The Fourthis the explanation of Yunqi in the form of Songs, which was taken by Wuqian's Yunqiyaojue, and Wengzao's Yunqiyaojue. Conclusions: Ludanchen published Yunqibian, and explained that Haizichouyinmaochen, which is the eclipse's south latitude, becomes Nanzheng, and Southern government, which is the eclipse's north latitude, becomes Northern government. Lumaoxiu revealed that the Liuqidasitian, founded by Wangpuzhuang, his great grandfather on the mother's side, is in alignment with the theory of Dashitian, used by Liushozhen, Lidongyuan, Zhudanxi, and Zhangjingyue. The representative figure in the favorable view of Yunqi in the Qing period is Wuyang, that of those who compromised is Fengzhaozhang, and that of opposition is Zhangzhuo.

  • Objectives : The theory of Latent Qi Wenbing and its counter-arguments were examined in terms of each argument's theoretical background and logicality. Methods :Arguments for and against the theory of Latent Qi Wenbing in medical texts were examined closely. Results & Conclusions : Each doctor's theory on Latent Qi Wenbing was examined in the following four aspects. First, to what kind of pathogenic qi was the patient exposed during Winter? Second, how did the pathogenic qi affect the body in the time of exposure? Third, how did the latent qi change over the Spring and Summer within the body? Fourth, what kind of weather generates the disease during Spring and Summer? Each argument had different opinions on each aspect. The main argument made against the theory of Latent Qi Wenbing is that it is impossible for the pathogenic qi that initially damaged the body to stay latent until it generates disease after some time. The theory of Latent Qi Wenbing could be assumed to have been created based on situations in which such explanation was adept. Factors that contribute to this theory could be explained through the condition of the healthy qi, state of cultivation during the past season, and constitutional factors.

  • Objectives : Deciding whether a year will be a Normal Qi Year is an important task within the study of Five Periods. Normal Qi Year, a period of peace and calmness, comes when a given year's elements are neither excessive nor deficient. There is, however, no unified definition for Normal Qi Year. This paper is written to propose a definition that could serve as such. Methods : Somunyukgihyunjumileo, various masters' opinions, and conventional Chinese scholars' claims were studied based on Hwnagjenaegyeong to produce this paper. Results : Within The Year of Sehoi(歲會年), only four years are Normal Qi Years and the other four years are not Normal Qi Years. The six years of Jehwa(齊化) are all Normal Qi Years because excessive elements are suppressed. The six years of Donghwa are all Normal Qi Years because deficient elements are bolstered. The years of Dongsehoi (同歲會) are all Normal Qi Years. All of the six elemental deficient years of the Year of Sunhwa(順化年), when the energy of Heaven emanates elements, are all Normal Qi Years. Conclusions : Not counting the overlapping Normal Qi Years during a periodical circle of 60 years, there is a total of 23 Normal Qi Years: the years of Eulchuk(乙丑), Jeongmyo(丁卯), Mujin(戊辰), Gyeongo(庚午), Shinmi(辛未), Gyeyu(癸酉), Eulyu(乙酉), Jeonghe(丁亥), Gichuk(己丑), Gyeongin(庚寅), Shimnyo(辛卯), Gyesa(癸巳), Eulmi(乙未), Musul(戊戌), Gyeongja(庚子), Shinchuk(辛丑), Gyemyo(癸卯), Eulmyo(乙卯), Jeongsa(丁巳), Gimi(己未), Gyeongshin(庚申), Shinyu(辛酉), and Gyehye(癸亥).

  • In the field of acupuncture and moxibustion, the theory of taboo of acupuncture and moxibustion on the basis of where the 'Qi and the soul of the men(人氣 人神)' exist became the foundation of the 'theory of chrono-acupunclure and moxibustion(時間性鍼灸法), that takes into account the thrift and retreatment of the Qi(氣) and the 'soul of the men' according to day and time. The fields of acupuncture and moxibustion in the theory of 'Yun Qi(運氣) which takes into account time space are the theories of the 'ZiWuLinZhu(子午流注)' and the 'LingGuiBaFa(靈龜八法)'. While the theory of the 'ZiWuLlnZhu' has the nature of time, 'LingGuiBaFa' has the nature of space comparatively. So the theory of 'Yun Qi' adopted and improved the time-space background that is the basis of the theory of the 'ZiWuLinZhu' and the 'LingGuiBaFa'.

  • The comparison of climate's character of Yunqi(運氣) with the data of meterological observation were made in the research of climate. 1. The comparison of the average velocity of wind, temperature, rainfall, humidity of Seoul, by late 1954 to 1983, with Yunqi(運氣) was made. Fire-Chi(火氣) and moisture-qi(濕氣) were matched with the attribute of Taiyun(大運). Cold-qi(寒氣) was had some relationship. Dry-qi(燥 氣) and Wind-qi(風氣) were not matched. About the relationship of Spirit-of-official-sky(司天之氣) with climate, when the Moisture-soil(濕土) was added, they were matched and when the King-fire(君火) was added, they have some relationship. But Wind-tree(風木), Dry-metal(燥金), Buble-fire(相火), Cold-water(寒水) was added they were not matched. 2. According to the observation data of rainfall by late 180 years of Seoul; about Taiyun(大運), when the Water-Yun(水運) was greatly exceeded and Fire-Yun(火運) was shorted, in the case of Official-sky(司天), when Wind-Tree(風木) was added, the frequency was highly. So when the Soil-Yun(土運) was greatly exceeded and when Official-sky(司天)was added to the Moisture-soil(濕土), the rainfall was not matched. 3. The relationship of the frequency of the abnormal climate occurrences between Yunqi-promotion-weak(運氣盛衰)and Yunqi-Harmony(運氣同化) and Yunqi-soft-attacking(運氣順逆) in the weather of Korean Peninsula was compared by 1564 to 1863. They were not matched except the case of Yunqi-Harmony(運氣同化). 4. There were some cases which were not matched exactly between the climate predicted by the theory and real climate in 1984, the year of Kap-ga(甲子年). But many correspondence between the observation by the office of meteorology and the prediction by the analysis from Yun-qi-sang-hab(運氣相合) theory. 5. Because meterological phenomena of real world and analysis from the hypothesis of Yunqi(運氣) have no relationship with each other, some of Doctor denied Yunqi(運氣) in the way of matching mechanically. But the thought of Doctor who denied Fortune-spirit(運氣) made promotion for the theory of divination by bringing deeper insight. And it was not only the negative side. 6. In the point of geographical difference, the climate of China, the origination Yunqi theory, is different from the Korea's. Thus some observation errors should be considered. From the basis of this thesis, I hope that the deeper advance would be made into the Korean Yunqi theory.

  • Objectives : The climate changes in the natural realm displays pheonomena of excess and deficiency due to the principle of Yiyinyiyangzhiweidao. Here, overabundant qi arises due to the works of multiplication and insultation. When this overabundant qi is in force, the retaliating qi appears without fail to create a parallel. This is the Autonomous Equilibrium Mechanism found in the natural world. Studying this mechanism is deeply significant in understanding the mechanisms of diseases. Methods : The paper is written by reviewing the texts found in Huangdineijing's Chapters of Yunqi, which are $Q{\grave{i}}jiaobiandalun$, Wuchangzhengdalun, $Liuyuanzhengj{\grave{i}}dalun$, Zhizhenyaodalun, and Suwenliuqixuanzhumiyu. Results & Conclusions : The overabundance and retaliation in Five Circuits take the form of the restrained child of the Five Circuits takes revenge on the overabundant qi on behalf of his mother. The overabundance and retaliation in Six Qi take the form of rapid healing of Benqi which was in stagnation. Traditionally, overabundant qi is the only one in existence when the Five Circuits are in excess and the year of Hai yin wu wei you xu's regular transformation. During this time, retaliating qi does not exist. When Five Circuits are in deficiency and in the year of Si shen zi chou mao chen's pattern transformation, both the overabundant and deficiency qis exist. However, regardless of regular transformation or pattern transformation, overabundant qi and retaliating qi cannot exist at the same time. This seems to be the rational conclusion. There are some regulations that overabundance and retaliation follow. First, the strong and weak, and number of days coincide. Second, overabundance qi appear during the first half of the period when the qi of controling heaven is in place. During the later half of the period when the qi of terrestrial effect is in force, retaliation qi is the one that appears. Third, overabundance and retaliation does not end with one time. Rather, they will continue to repeat appearance and disappearance without any set pattern. Fourth, the overabundance and retaliation of the guest qi and dominant qi only has overabundance and no retaliation.
