  • The goal of this article is to estimate the change in plasma catecholamine when ST-36 (Leg Three Li) and HT-7 (Spirit Gate) among the meridian points were stimulated for the group of the young and the old, using SSP therapy, thereby clarifying its effects on the responses of catecholamine that generates various physiological effects on the body, in particular, the effects on catecholamine, in the senile body, thereby providing its availability for physical therapy for the old, which is now the major concern of the society. As for research subjects, a total of 10 healthy male and female adults in their twenties were selected as the group of the young, and 10 old male and female, aged over 60, as the group of the old. The findings are as follows: When SSP stimuli were applied to ST-36 and HT-7, as for the change in the content of plasma catecholamine for the group of the young, norepinephrine significantly increased from $309.40{\pm}23.81pg/ml$ before stimulation to $374.90{\pm}35.31pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and to $406.70{\pm}42.43pg/ml$ 40 minutes later (P < 0.05); epinephrine significantly increased from $100.70{\pm}28.55pg/ml$ before stimulation to $95.70{\pm}24.16pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and to $128.80{\pm}25.02pg/ml$ 40 minutes later (P < 0.05); and dopamine showed no significant differences as its content was $245.20{\pm}40.01pg/ml$ before stimulation, $233.50{\pm}59.56pg/ml$ 20 minutes later and $250.90{\pm}56.13pg/ml$ 40 minutes later.

  • Purpose: Cases of male external genitalia lymphedema are relatively uncommon in the clinical physical therapy field. Of more than two thousand clinical cases treated by the author in the lymphedema treatment center, only 4~5 cases of male external genitalia lymphedema were encountered. The present case report presents the experience and treatment results of male external genitalia lymphedema from urological cancer. Method: This case was a 47-year-old man, who was treated with complex decongestive physical therapy consisting of manual lymph drainage, compression bandage (including the external genitalia), remedial exercise, skin care. Result: The results were relatively good. The clinical experience would suggest that early treatment and education can reduce the external genitalia lymphedema. However, the treatment efficacy remains limited. Therefore, early treatment is vital for more successful outcomes. Conclusion: The relief of symptoms and a decrease in male external genitalia lymphedema may be the best result from long-term conservative management.

  • Purpose: Clear cell hidradenoma, now regarded as an eccrine sweat gland tumor on the basis of its enzyme histochemical and electron microscopic features, occurs as a solitary tumor in most instances. Methods: A 17 year old male presented with asymptomatic nodule, which had developed on nipple with a four years of history and total excision and purse-string suture was then performed. Results: No recurrence was observed 2 months after excision. Histologically, it showed a well circumscribed tumor composed of characteristic clear epithelial cells which are focally arranged in glandular patterns. Conclusion: This case is unique in that the tumor developed on the young male nipple, unusual site and this report emphasizes the benefit of local excision to prevent recurrence of these tumor.

  • A survey was performed to 238 male young men who were living alone (104 persons) or living with roommates (134 persons). Their average age was 22.6 years old, height 171.8cm, and weight 65.6kg. Their daily calcium intake level was averaged 271.9 $\pm$ 169.1mg, which was 38.8% of Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances(RDA). Comparing calcium intake of each mealtime, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were composed of 18.6%, 30.0%, 34.0% and 17.4%, respectively. Their daily iron intake level was averaged 8.9 $\pm$ 10.8mg, which was 74.3% of Korean RDA. Comparing iron intake of each mealtime, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks were composed of 15.4%, 33.6%, 36.3% and 14.7%, respectively. Deficiency of these minerals in young male adults were severe and the nutrient qualities were also poor and the deficiency was more profound in calcium than in iron. And we observed iron nutrition differed significantly according to their living status, such as iron intake and its %RDA were significantly worse in single living subjects than the other. However calcium did not show significant difference. It was found mineral intake, especially iron, could be improved in young men living with roommates than living alone and regular breakfast could improve calcium and iron intakes. • The purpose of this study is to examine how relatively young old men become old people after retirement and how they view their forthcoming old age. We interviewed the aspects of lives of the 10 relatively young old men to attain the purpose. According to the interviews, it was difficult to get a job after retirement in our society even though they wanted to do. This paper focuses on how the process of lowering their expectation to work happened, how they viewed their forthcoming old age during the process. One of the results showed that whenever they had failed to attain a job, they had been asked to lower their expectation of work. It seemed that their expectation to work became weak. But the process of exclusion of social role took away not only their expectation to work but also their plan for the future. As a result, the gap between an individual who wanted to be younger and the society which made them older made to decrease the degree of satisfaction.

  • The immune system may play an important role in aging and the changes in the immune status are associated with treatment of various immunomodulators. This study examined the effects of $\beta$-glucans isolated from mushroom fungi, Coriolus versicolor on macrophages functions in young (8-weeks-old) and aged (82-weeks-old) male C57BL/6 mice. When peritoneal macrophages were treated with various concentrations of $\beta$-glucan ($1-100\;{\mu}g/ml$) for 24 hrs, tumoricidal activity, NO production and phagocytic activity were significantly increased in the young mice, whereas there are no effects in the aged mice. These results suggest that $\beta$-glucans has differential effects on the macrophage functions in young and aged mice and age nutrition might need to be considered to select proper immunomodulator. In addition, $\beta$-glucan could be used clinically for the treatment of diseases such as cancer therapy in the young.

  • Metabolic syndrome, defined as the clustering of several metabolic disorders including obesity (waist circumference ${\geq}90$ if male or ${\geq}80$ if female, cm), dyslipidemia ($TG{\geq}150$ or HDL-C<40 if male or <50 if female, mg/dl), hypertension ($BP{\geq}130/85mmHg$) and hyperglycemia (fasting plasma $glucose{\geq}110mg/dl$), increases the cardiovascular risk of the general population. Recently, risk of this syndrome arises in young adults world widely. Therefore, we randomly selected and evaluated the risk of metabolic syndrome of total 43 people (group I-22, group II-21) for 2 years. Group I was 22 peoples (15 males, 7 females) with age of 22 thru 35 year old (average 28 year old) and group II was 21 people (19 male, 2 female) with age of 22 thur 32 years old (average 24 year old) in Cheongju area from March 1st thru 30th of 2008 in Cheongju area from September 1st thru 30th of 2007 in order to find out how serious this phenomenon is in young adult of Korea. 13.95% (n=7) of total people has a metabolic syndrome by NCEP/ATPIII definition among this group (group I-6, group II-1). Those of 6 have 3 or over risk factor for metabolic syndrome such as obesity, hypertension, fasting blood glucose and hypetriglyceridemia at the same time (group I-5, group II-1). Group I have more risk factor because of more higher age than group II. Therefore we need aggressively to monitor and provide them for early diagnosis, educational programs and assistance for lifestyle changes in order to prevent metabolic syndrome among young adults.

  • Pneumosinus Dilatans consists of an abnormal dilatation of the paranasal sinuses which contain air only and lined by normal mucosa. It is a rare condition, the etiology of which is unclear. A 16 year old male complained frontal bossing which developed slowly. Simple X-ray and CT showed abnormal distension of frontal sinus. Another 19 year old male complained slowly growing left cheek mass. Simple X-ray and CT showed abnormal distension of anteromedial wall of maxillary sinus. In view of the cosmetic appearance, operations were performed. Distended sinuses walls were removed and reconstructed using $Medpore^{(R)}$. I report 2 cases of pneumosinus dilatans which developed in frontal and maxillary sinuses and the literature reviewed.

  • The lung cancer in patients under 40 years old is rare and reported to be more rapidly fatal than in older persons. We reviewed the records of 18 cases who younger than 40 years with histologically proven lung cancer between 1959 and 1992 at department of Thoracic Surgery in National Medical Center. There were 12 male and 6 female patients. Two male and all female patients had never smoked. The 17 cases had respiratory symptoms for a mean duration of 3 months. The squamous carcinoma was found in 7 cases[38.9%], small cell carcinoma in 4 cases[22.2%], mixed cell carcinoma in 4 cases[22.2%], adenocarcinoma in 2 cases[11.1%] and bronchoalveolar cell carcinoma in 1 case. Among the 6 resected tumors, one case was stage I, two cases were stage II and three cases were stage IIIa. The operation was considered complete and curative in 6 patients and noncurative in 6 pations because of an exploratory thoracotomy. We conclude that lung cancer in young persons is virulent and that diagnosis is frequently delayed.
