Photosynthetic responses to dehydration were examined by the simulataneous measurement of O2 evolution and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence in green pepper leaves. Dehydration was induced by immersing the plant roots directly in the Hoagland solution containing varying concentration (2-30%) of polyethylene glycol(PEG-6000) . Water potential of the leaf was decreased time-and concentation -dependently by PEG-treatment. The decrease in water potential of leaf was correlated with the decrease in both the maximal photosynthesis (Pmax) and quantum yield of O2 evolution, but Pmax dropped more rapidly than quantum yield at all water deficit conditions tested. However, Chl fluorescence parameters were not affected much. Dehydration did not change the initial fluorescence (Fo) and maximum photochemical efficiency(Fv/Fm) of photosystem(PS) II. Both the photochemical quenching (qP) and non-photochemical quenching(NPQ) were not changed by dehydration under low PFR(50 $\mu$mols m-2s-1 ). In contrast, under high PFR(270$\mu$mols m-2s-1)qP was slightly decreased while NPQ was greatly increased. The fast induction kinetics of Chl fluroecence showed no change in Chl fluorescence pattern by dehydration at high PFR (640 $\mu$mols m-2s-1 ), but exhibited a significant drop in peak level(Fp)at low PRFR (70$\mu$mols m-2s-1 ). PS I oxidation and reduction kinetics revealed normal reduction but delayed oxidation to P-700+, suggesting no lesionin electron flow from PSII to PSI , but impaired electron transport to NADP+,These results suggest that water stress caused by PEG-treatment results in the reduction of photosynthesis, promarily due to the reducted electron trasport from PSI to NADP+ or hampered subsequent steps involving Calvin Cycle.

The Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) is the next generation braking system for automobiles and railway vehicles. Current brake systems for high-speed trains generate a braking force using a pneumatic cylinder, but EMB systems produce that force through a combination of an electric motor and a gear. In this study, an EMB operation mechanism capable of generating a high braking force was proposed, and structural and vibration analyses of the gears and shafts, which are the core parts of the mechanisms, were performed. Dynamic structural analysis confirmed that the maximum stress in the analysis model was within the yield strength of the material. In addition, the design that maximizes the diameter of the motor shaft was found to be advantageous in strength, and large shear stress could be generated in the bolt fixing the gear and eccentric shaft. In addition, a test apparatus that can reproduce the mechanism of the analytical model was fabricated to measure the strain of the fixed bolt part, which is the most vulnerable part. The strain measurement results showed that the error between the analysis and measurement was within 10%, which could verify the accuracy of the analytical model.
Fresh and hardened behaviors of a new hybrid fiber (steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol fiber and calcium carbonate whisker) reinforced cementitious composites (HyFRCC) with admixtures (fly ash, silica fume and water reducer) have been studied. Within the limitations of the equipment and testing program, it is illustrated that the rheological properties of the new HyFRCC conform to the modified Bingham model. The relations between flow spread and yield stress as well as flow rate and plastic viscosity both conform well with negative exponent correlation, justifying that slump flow and flow rate test can be applied to replace the other two as simple rheology measurement and control method in jobsite. In addition, for the new HyFRCC with fly ash and water reducer, the mathematical model between the rheological and mechanical properties conform well with the quadratic function, and these quadratic function curves are always concave upward. Based on mathematical analysis, an optimal range of rheology/ flowability can be identified to achieve ideal mechanical properties. In addition, this optimization method can be extended to PVA fiber reinforced cement-based composites.

In this study, we report characteristics of friction stir welding (FSW) technique applied to Al-6005-T6 extruded sheets, which is a common material for railway car bodies. With the welding speed fixed at 300 mm/min, the revolution per minute (RPM) of the rotating tool was varied from 600 to 1800 RPM, with the aim at evaluating the resultant microstructure and mechanical behaviors. Comparison is also made with the conventional Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding technique. Unlike MIG, no micro-voids were observed for FSW specimens. Hardness measurement revealed that the increased heat input by increasing RPM results in widened heat affected zone (HAZ) and decreased hardness for HAZ due to grain coarsening. Hardness results for the nugget do no show difference. During tensile tests, specimens fractured at HAZ, and increasing rpm led to decrease of the yield stress and tensile stress for the selected RPM range, which is considered to be due to the grain coarsening for HAZ.

The crop growth model has been widely used for climate change impact assessment. Crop growth model require genetic coefficients for simulating growth and yield. In order to determine the genetic coefficients, regional growth monitoring data or yield trial data of crops has been used to calibrate crop growth model. The aim of this study is to verify that yield trial data of corn is appropriate to calibrate genetic coefficients of CERES-MAIZE. Field experiment sites were Suwon, Jinju, Daegu and Changwon. The distance from the weather station to the experimental field were from 1.3km to 27km. Genetic coefficients calibrated by yield trial data showed good performance in silking day. The genetic coefficients associated with silking are determined only by temperature. In CERES-MAIZE model, precipitation or irrigation does not have a significant effect on phenology related genetic coefficients. Although the effective distance of the temperature could vary depending on the terrain, reliable genetic coefficients were obtained in this study even when a weather observation site was within a maximum of 27 km. Therefore, it is possible to estimate the genetic coefficients by yield trial data in study area. However, the yield-related genetic coefficients did not show good results. These results were caused by simulating the water stress without accurate information on irrigation or rainfall. The yield trial reports have not had accurate information on irrigation timing and volume. In order to obtain significant precipitation data, the distance between experimental field and weather station should be closer to that of the temperature measurement. However, the experimental fields in this study was not close enough to the weather station. Therefore, When determining the genetic coefficients of regional corn yield trial data, it may be appropriate to calibrate only genetic coefficients related to phenology.
The iron is an element having a high yield strength, mechanical hardness, good electrical conductivity, and also it has been used in various fields because of ease machining. In bridges have been used tendon made of a steel wire for large loads and light weight. Tension measurement of tendon employed in PreStressed Concrete (PSC) bridge is very important for the bridge safety check. NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) is essential for the safety check, however, magnetic NDT is difficult to apply due to the non-linear magnetization curve and hysteresis loop in the magnetic properties. In this work, for basic study of magnetic NDT application, we have constructed a B-H loop measuring system for 7-strand tendon of which diameter is 15.5 mm, and which can apply tensile stress up to 2.0 GPa. We have measured hysteresis loops of two kinds of tendons under different tensile stress. Amplitude permeability and maximum magnetic induction near knee show the most sensitive and high linearity depends on tensile stress. Relative amplitude permeability was decreased from 500 to 200 and maximum magnetic flux density changed 0.6 T.
This study was carried out to quantify the drought stress in grafted watermelon seedlings non-destructively by using chlorophyll fluorescence (CF) imaging technique rather than the visual judgment. Six-day old watermelon seedlings were grown under uniform irrigation for 3 days, and then given drought stress. Afterward, the sensor for the measurement of water content in plug tray cell unit was used to classify the drought-stress level into nine groups from D1 (53.0%, sufficient moisture state) to D9 (15.7%, extremely dry stress), and the 16 CF parameters were measured. In addition, re-irrigation was performed on the drought stressed seedlings(D5 - D9) to determine the growth and photosynthesis recovery level, which was not confirmed by visual judgment. The kinetic curve patterns of CF in three different drought stressed seedling groups were found to be different for the early detection of drought stress. All the 16 CF parameters decreased continuously with exposure to drought stress and drastically decreased from D5 (32.1%) where the visual judgment was possible. The fluorescence decline ratio (Rfd_Lss) started to decrease from the initial drought stress level (D5 - D6), and the Maximum PSII quantum yield (Fv/Fm) was significantly decreased in the later extreme drought stress range (D7 - D9) by re-irrigation recovery test. Thus, Rfd_Lss and Fv/Fm parameters were finally selected as potent indicators of growth and photosynthesis recovery in the initial and later stages of drought stress. Also, to the differences in the numerical values of the individual chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, the drought stress level was intuitively confirmed through the image. These results indicate that Rfd and Fv/Fm can be considered as potential CF parameters for the detection of low and extremely high drought stress, respectively. Furthermore, Fv/Fm can be considered as the best CF parameters for recovery at re-irrigation.

This study aims to report the behavioral mechanism of steel pipe reinforcement grouting, which is being actively used to ensure the stability of the excavation surface during tunnel excavation, based on measurements taken at the actual site. After using a 12 m steel pipe attached with a shape displacement meter and a strain gauge to reinforce the actual tunnel surface, behavioral characteristics were identified by analyzing the measured deformation and stress of the steel pipe. Taking into account that the steel pipes were overlapped every 6 m, the measured data up to 7 m of excavation were used. In addition, the behavioral characteristics of the steel pipe reinforcement according to the difference in strength were also examined by applying steel pipes with different allowable stresses (SGT275 and SGT550). As a result of analyzing the behavior of steel pipes for 7 hours after the first excavation for 1 m and before proceeding with the next excavation, the stress redistribution due to the arching effect caused by the excavation relaxation load was observed. As excavation proceeded by 1 m, the excavated section exhibited the greatest deformation during excavation of 4 to 6 m due to the stress distribution of the three-dimensional relaxation load, and deformation and stress were generated in the steel pipe installed in the ground ahead of the tunnel face. As a result of comparing the behavior of SGT275 steel pipe (yield strength 275 MPa) and SGT550 steel pipe (yield strength 550 MPa), the difference in the amount of deformation was up to 18 times and the stress was up to 12 times; the stronger the steel pipe, the better it was at responding to the relaxation load. In this study, the behavior mechanism of steel pipe reinforcement grouting in response to the arching effect due to the relaxation load was identified based on the measured data during the actual tunnel excavation, and the results were reported.

With large specific strength and outstanding corrosion resistance and erosion resistance in sea water, titanium and titanium alloy are widely used in heat exchanger production. In particular, pure titanium demonstrates outstanding molding performance and may be considered optimal for production of heat exchanger. Since titanium is very vulnerable to oxidation and embrittlement during welding, processes with less heat input are widely used, and laser welding is widely applied by considering production performance and shield etc in atmosphere. So far, 1st report and 2nd report compared and analyzed embrittlement degrees by bead colors of weldment through oxygen and nitrogen quantitative analysis and hardness measurement, and evaluated welding performance and mechanical properties of butt welding. This study evaluated field applicability of lap welding to heat exchange plate of LPG re-liquefaction device for ships through tensile stress test, hardness test and internal pressure test etc after deducing optimal weding condition and applying to actual heat exchange plate. In bead overlap area, the experiment produced sound welds with no porosity or defect by increasing and decreasing laser power, and tensile-shear test results indicated virtually the same tension and yield strength as base metal. As a result of measuring hardness at lateral cross section and bead overlap zone of actual heat exchanger welds, hardness difference within 20Hv was produced at base metal, HAZ and weldment, and as a result of pneumatic and hydraulic pressure test, no leakage occurred.
Mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) consist of a work platform, extending structure, and chassis, and are used to move persons to working positions. MEWPs are useful but are composed of pieces of equipment, and accidents do occur owing to equipment defects. Among these defects, accidents caused by the fracture of bolts fixed to the extension structure and swing system are increasing. This paper presents a failure analysis of the fixing bolts of MEWP. Standard procedure for failure analysis was employed in this investigation. Visual inspection, chemical analysis, tensile strength measurement, microstructural characterization, fractography analysis by Optical Microscope(OM) and Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), and finite element analysis (FEA) were used to analyze the failure of the fixing bolts. Using this failure analysis approach, we found the root cause of failure and proposed a means for solving this type of failure in the future. First, the chemical composition of the fixing bolt is obtained by a spectroscopy chemical analysis method, which determined that the chemical composition matched the required standard. The tensile test showed that the tensile and yield strengths were within the required capacity. The stress analysis was carried out at five different boom angles, and it was determined that the fixing bolt of MEWP can withstand the loads at all the boom angles. The outcomes of the fatigue analysis revealed that the fixing bolt fails before reaching the design requirements. The results of the fatigue analysis showed primarily that the failure of the fixing bolt was due to fatigue. A visual inspection of the fractured section of the fixing bolt also confirmed the fatigue failure. We propose a method to prevent failure of the fixing bolt of the MEWP from four different standpoints: the manufacturer, safety certification authority, safety inspection agency, and owner.
