  • Near infrared (NIR) reflectance spectroscopy was employed to develop moisture content prediction model of pitch pine (Pinus rigida), red pine (Pinus densiflora), Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis), yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) wood below fiber saturation point. NIR reflectance spectra of specimens ranging from 1000 nm to 2400 nm were acquired after humidifying specimens to reach several equilibrium moisture contents. To determine the optimal moisture contents prediction model, 5 mathematical preprocessing methods (moving average (smoothing point: 3), baseline, standard normal variate (SNV), mean normalization, Savitzky-Golay $2^{nd}$ derivatives (polynomial order: 3, smoothing point: 11)) were applied to reflectance spectra of each specimen as 8 combinations. After finishing mathematical preprocessings, partial least squares (PLS) regression analysis was performed to each modified spectra. Consequently, the mathematical preprocessing methods deriving optimal moisture content prediction were 1) moving average/SNV for pitch pine and red pine, 2) moving average/SNV/Savitzky-golay $2^{nd}$ derivatives for Korean pine and yellow poplar. Every model contained three principal components.

  • In order to remove acetyl group from yellow poplar, deacetylation was performed using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) prior to oxalic acid pretreatment. During the deacetylation ($60^{\circ}C$ for 80 min, 0.8% NaOH), most of the acetyl group were removed from hemicellulose. Simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF) and semi-SSF were carried out based on solid loading (10, 12.5, 15%) of deacetylated biomass and pre-hydrolysis with enzymes (0, 6, 12, 24 h). The highest ethanol was obtained as 26.73 g/L after 120 h when 10% of biomass was used for SSF. It is corresponding to 88.41% of theoretical ethanol yield. At the 12.5% and 15% of biomass loading, the highest ethanol was obtained from 6 h pre-hydrolysis. It was 32.34 g/L and 27.15 g/L, respectively, and corresponding to ethanol yield of 85.58 and 59.87%. In order to remove fermentation inhibitors from hydrolysates, overliming was performed using calcium hydroxide ($Ca(OH)_2$). The highest ethanol was 5.28 g/L after 72 h of fermentation.

  • The 5-year-old seedlings and emblings which regenerated from somatic embryos were compared to the height, DBH, foliar characteristics, content of chlorophyll (chlorophyll a, b and total chlorophyll), carotenoid and leaf microstructure in Liriodendron tulipifera. In comparison of height and DBH (diameter at breast height), no significant differences were found in height (seedling, 3.8 m; embling, 3.87 m) and DBH (seedling, 12.09 cm; embling, 12.53 cm). The emblings and seedlings were similar in values of length (seedling, 108.11 mm, embling, 113.59 mm), width (seedling, 149.1 mm; embling, 167.71 mm), surface area (seedling, $119.92mm^2$; embling, $164.43mm^2$), fresh weight (seedling, 2.1 g; embling, 2.62 g) of leaf, and length (seedling, 81.49 mm; embling, 98.41 mm) and thickness (seedling, 1.66 mm; embling, 1.98 mm) of petiole. In case of chlorophyll content in the leaves, the chlorophyll a (seedlings, $11.2{\mu}g/g$; emblings, $13.2{\mu}g/g$), b (seedlings, $4.8{\mu}g/g$; emblings, $5.4{\mu}g/g$) and total content were higher in emblings ($930.2{\mu}g/g$) than seedlings ($800.1{\mu}g/g$), however, content of carotenoid (seedlings, $260.3{\mu}g/g$; embling, $265.2{\mu}g/g$) showed similar in both plants. Leaves of emblings had a similar pattern of histological structure (palisade or sponge parenchyma) to that of seedlings leaves. Therefore, the results showed that there were no remarkable growth differences when compared with 5-year-emblings and seedlings of yellow poplar.

  • Effects of paper mill sludge-fertilizers were investigated on the growth performances of tree seedlings under field conditions. Two types of sludge-fertilizers applied were an organic sludge compost and a processed sludge-pellet fertilizer strengthened with several components of organic and inorganic nutrients. Three species of tree seedlings studied were ibota privet(Ligustrum obtusifolium) and yellow poplar(Liriodendron tulipifera) of 1-0 year seedlings and also eastern white pine(Pinus strobus) of 2-2 year seedlings. Nitrogen and phosphorus contents of plot soil treated with sludge compost+sludge-pellet fertilizer+sludge-pellet fertilizer plot were increased to 8 times and 2.6 times as those of control plot, respectively. The growth performances of root collar diameter and seedling height were repeatedly measured up to five times through the growing season and the results were analyzed statistically by analysis of variance of randomized block design and Duncan's multiple range test. The growth performances of dry weight were measured after last fifth measurements.
