  • Numerous Sundials were fabricated during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty. One among them is Jeongnam-Ilgu (the Fixing-South Sundial), where the time can be measured after setting up the suitable meridian line without a compass. We reconstructed the new Jeongnam-Ilgu model based on the records of 'Description of Making the Royal Observatory Ganui (簡儀臺記)' in the Veritable Record of King Sejong. Jeongnam-Ilgu has a summer solstice half-ring under a horizontal ring which is fixed to two pillars in the north and south, and in which a declination ring rotates around the polar axis. In our model, the polar axis matches the altitude of Hanyang (that is Seoul). There are two merits if the model is designed to install the polar axis in the way that enters both the north and south poles and rotates in them: One is that it is possible to fix the polar axis to the declination ring together with the cross-strut. The other is that a twig for hanging weights can be protruded on the North Pole. The declination ring is supposed to be 178 mm in diameter and is carved on the scale of the celestial-circumference degrees on the ring's surface, where a degree scale can be divided into four equal parts through the diagonal lines. In addition, the time's graduation that is drawn on the summer solstice half-ring makes it possible to measure the daytime throughout the year. An observational property of Jeongnam-Ilgu is that a solar image can be obtained using a pin-hole. The position cast by the solar image between hour circles makes a time measurement. We hope our study will contribute to the restoration of Jeongnam-Ilgu.

  • This study was carried out to examine the tree-ring growth characteristics of Pinus thunbergii Parl. after replanting on the reclaimed land from the sea in Kwangyang bay, The factors, mostly affecting the growths of Pinus thunbergii Parl. , were the replanting stress and drought. The growth reduction due to replanting occurred in the replanting year and following year, but that due to drought after 2-3 years of replanting. The growth recovery after replanting differed with soil condition. The sites showing fast recovery were the covered ground of improve soil, the ground of medium mounding, the top and the slope ground of big mounding sites. The filled ground of improve soil and the lower ground of big mounding sites showed retarded growths. The mean sensitivity(year-to-year variation) and the coefficient of variation(tree-to-tree variation in a certain year) in tree rings of Pinus thunbergii Parl. were higher in the poor soil sites than in the favourable soil ones. The physical characteristics of the soil, especially soil hardness, were the most crucial. The mean sensitivity and the coefficient of variation were also low in the salty soil environment.

  • This experiment was made to find the peripheral variations of annualring widths, the cell dimensions, microfibril angles and bulk densities within each annual-ring of horizontal-growing young tree of beech(Betul a platyphylla var. japonica) and Oak (Quercus variabilis) from the tension to the opposite side. Also a comparision between the features of the obnormal annual ring for horizontal-growing year and normal annual ring for the straight-growing years was made. The dimension of propotion of the element, the microfibril angles and the bulk density decreased or increased continuously toward opposite side which showed minimum or maximum value. The dimension of elements the microfibril angles and the bulk density decreased or increased continuously towards opposite side which showed minimum or maximum value. The dimension of elements. the microfibril angles and the bulk density in the normal annual rings were similar to those in the lateral woods. whereas were significantly more different in the tension wood than in the opposite wood. The features of typical opposite wood in the hardwoods were influenced by the locations within the inclined stems than effects of the decrease in the annual ring width. The oppostie woods in hardwoods did not conform to the tension wood and lateral wood. The abnormal annual ring included the opposite wood, lateral wood similar to normal wood and tension wood having specialized structure even in the same annual ring.

  • Much of northern Asia is lacking in high-resolution palaeoclimatic data coverage. This vast region thus represents a sizeable gap in data sets used to reconstruct hemispheric-scale temperature trends for the past millennium. To improve coverage, we present a regional-scale composite of four tree-ring width records of Siberian pine and Siberian larch from temperature-sensitive alpine timber-line sites in Mongolia. The chronologies load closely in principal components analysis (PCA) with the first eigenvector accounting for over 53% of the variance from ad 1450 to 1998. The 20-year interval from 1974 to 1993 is the highest such growth period in this composite record, and 17 of the 20 highest growth years have occurred since 1946. Thus these trees, unlike those recently described at some northern sites, do not appear to have lost their temperature sensitivity, and suggest that recent decades have been some of the warmest in the past 500 years for this region. There are, however, comparable periods of inferred, local warmth for individual sites, e.g., in 1520-1580 and 1760-1790. The percent common variance between chronologies has increased through time and is highest (66.1%) in the present century. Although there are obvious differences among the individual chronologies, this result suggests a coherent signal which we consider to be related to temperature. The PCA scores show trends which strongly resemble those seen in recent temperature reconstructions for the Northern Hemisphere, very few of which included representation from Eurasia east of the Ural Mountains. The Mongolia series therefore provides independent corroboration for these reconstructions and their indications of unusual wanning during the twentieth century.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the changes in retentive force of stud attachments for implant overdentures by in vitro 2-year-wear simulation. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three commercially available attachment systems were investigated: Kerator blue, O-ring red, and EZ lock. Two implant fixtures were embedded in parallel in each custom base mounting. Five pairs of each attachment system were tested. A universal testing machine was used to measure the retentive force during 2500 insertion and removal cycles. Surface changes on the components were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by Pairwise comparison, was used to compare the retentive force between the groups, and to determine groups that were significantly different (${\alpha}$<.05). RESULTS. A comparison of the initial retentive force revealed the highest value for Kerator, followed by the O-ring and EZ lock attachments. However, no significant difference was detected between Kerator and O-ring (P>.05). After 2500 insertion and removal cycles, the highest retention loss was recorded for O-ring, and no significant difference between Kerator and EZ lock (P>.05). Also, Kerator showed the highest retentive force, followed by EZ lock and O-ring, after 2500 cycles (P<.05). Based on SEM analysis, the polymeric components in O-ring and Kerator were observed to exhibit surface wear and deformation. CONCLUSION. After 2500 insertion and removal cycles, all attachments exhibited significant loss in retention. Mechanism of retention loss can only be partially explained by surface changes.

  • Gonadal developmint, age and growth of Ruditapes philippinarum were investigated using samples from the intertidal zone of Simpo on the coast of Kimje, Korea, which were collected onthly for one year from Februaty 1993 to January 1994.Ruditapes philippinarum is diecious in sex. The gonads are located between the subregion of the midintestinal glands and reticular connective tissue of the foot. The ovary is composed of a number of ovarian sacs, and the testis is composed of numerous seminiferous tubules. The clam spawns once a year from early June to darly October, and the main spawning occurred between July and August when the water temperature went above 23$^{\circ}C$. Ripe oocytes are about 65-70${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter. Gonadal phases of this species can be divided into five successive stages; multiplicative(February to March), growing (April to May), mature(Aprilto Septimber), spent(June to October), and degenerative and resting(july to March). Spawning is closely related to the sea water temperature. Based on the monthly variations of marginal index (MI')of the shell, it was suggested that the annual ring mark formation occurred in March once a year and took approximately 8 months (0.67 year) for first ring to be formed on the shell. The relationship between the shell length(SL) and the total weight (TW) was represented by nonlinear equation; TW=1.208 x 10/ sup -4/ S $L^{3.158}$, and also in the relationship be-tweenthe shell length (SL) and the shell height(SH), the shell length and the shell width (SW) were represented by the linear equations; SH=0.726 SL-0.483, SW=0.542 SL-0.803.Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to von Bertalanffs equation were expressed as: S $L_{t}$ =68.34(1- $e^{0.221}$(t+0.418)) T $W_{t}$ =75.16(1- $e^{0.221}$(t=0.418))$^{3.158/3.158}$

  • This study aims to develop a restoration model of an armillary sphere of Tongcheon-ui (Pan-celestial Armillary Sphere) by referring to the records of Damheonseo (Hong Dae-Yong Anthology) and the artifact of an armillary sphere in the Korean Christian Museum of Soongsil University. Between 1760 and 1762, Hong, Dae-Yong (1731-1783) built Tongcheon-ui, with Na, Kyung-Jeok (1690-1762) designing the basic structure and Ann, Cheo-In (1710-1787) completing the assembly. The model in this study is a spherical body with a diameter of 510 mm. Tongcheon-ui operates the armillary sphere by transmitting the rotational power from the lantern clock. The armillary sphere is constructed in the fashion of a two-layer sphere: the outer one is Yukhab-ui that is fixed; and the inner one, Samsin-ui, is rotated around the polar axis. In the equatorial ring possessed by Samsin-ui, an ecliptic ring and a lunar-path ring are successively fixed and are tilted by 23.5° and 28.5° over the equatorial ring, respectively. A solar miniature attached to a 365-toothed inner gear on the ecliptic ring reproduces the annual motion of the Sun. A lunar miniature installed on a 114-toothed inner gear of the lunar-path ring can also replay the moon's orbital motion and phase change. By the set of 'a ratchet gear, a shaft and a spur gear' installed in the solstice-colure double-ring, the inner gears in the ecliptic ring and lunar-path ring can be rotated in the opposite direction to the rotation of Samsin-ui and then the solar and lunar miniatures can simulate their revolution over the period of a year and a month, respectively. In order to indicate the change of the moon phases, 27 pins were arranged in a uniform circle around the lunar-path ring, and the 29-toothed wheel is fixed under the solar miniature. At the center of the armillary sphere, an earth plate representing a world map is fixed horizontally. Tongcheon-ui is the armillary sphere clock developed by Confucian scholars in the late Joseon Dynasty, and the technical level at which astronomical clocks could be produced at the time is of a high standard.

  • The relationship between shell length and ring radius in each ring group was expressed as a regression line. Therefore, there is a correspondence in each ring formation. Based on the monthly variation of the marginal index (Ml') of the shell, it is assumed that the ring of this species was formed once a year during the period of August to October, and the main period of the annual ring formation was August through September. The relationship between shell length (SL) and total weight (TW) was expressed by the equation TW = 2.2476 $\times$ 10$^{-5}$ SL$^{3.536}$ ($r^2$= 0.90). Shell length (SL) and shell height (SH; mm) were highly correlated with the equation SH = 0.7545 SL - 0.0145 ($r^2$= 0.93). The shell length (SL)-shell width (SW) relation was expressed by the equation SW = 0.5336 SL- 2.4253 ($r^2$= 0.87). Growth curves for shell length and total weight fitted to the von Bertalanffy's equation were expressed as follows: SL$_{t}$ =60.02[1 - e$^{-0.6458(t-0.3895)}$ ], Twt = 43.63[1 - e$^{0.6458(t-0.3895)}$ ]$^{3.536}$ .

  • We present age and growth data for Ilisha elongata, based on 363 specimens caught in 1999 and 2000 around Jeju Island and the southwest coast of Korea. Scale and ring radii of each ring group showed a direct one-to-one relationship, with ring radius increasing as scale radius increased. The relationship between fork length and scale radius was FL=39.553SR+60.935 for females, FL=39.474SR+54.026 for males, and FL=39.608SR+57.547 for both sexes. Monthly changes in the marginal index indicated that a new ring appears once each year (in July). Maximum age, mean age and mean fork length of fish were 10 years, 5.0 years, and 349mm, respectively. Von Bertalanffy's growth equations were $FL_t=495.4{\times}[1-\exp(-0.2586(t+0.6487))]$ for fork length (mm) and $W_t=1,112.5{\times}[1-\exp(-0.2586(t+0.6487))]^{2.874}$ for body weight (g) for both sexes. Monthly changes in the gonadosomatic index (GSI) indicated that the spawning period was in June and July, which corresponded closely with ring formation time. Differences in monthly GSI changes in 1999 and 2000 may be related to water temperature variation. Fecundity ranged from 5,664 to 176,290 eggs per individual (n=43, fork length 264-470mm). The relationship between fecundity(F) and fork length was $F=7.7{\times}10^{-7}{\times}FL^{4.9269}$.

  • We report a successful repair of severe traumatic tricuspid regurgitation by PTFE chordal replacement and ring annuloplasty. A 64-year-old man with multiple trauma was referred to our department because of cardiomegaly on chest roentgenogram. Echocardiography showed moderate amount of pericardial effusion and severe tricuspid regurgitation with rupture of anterior papillary muscle. But he experienced progressive dyspnea, and chest roentgenogram showed pro ressive cardiomegaly. He underwent operation 4 months after trauma. The nterior papillary muscle was reinserted, and the valve was repaired by PTFE chordal replacements and ring annuloplasty. Postoperatively, the patient's functional status was improved, and there was trivial tricuspid regurgitation on echocardiographic examination.
