Nowadays we can take a physical examination during pregnancy by various and advanced technology instruments. But there were no instruments in old times, so the ancient doctors examined symptoms and pulse of a pregnant woman. Therefore it is very important to comprehend the pulse in Oriental medicine. Fetus and mother are connected with the umbilical cord, and they interact with each other. Especially, symptoms and pulse of mother change during the formation of fetus. On account of being easy to study the changes of pulse from pregnant woman, it is important to know the formation of fetus. In Western medicine, the Buddhist scriptures and Oriental medicine mentioned about the formation of fetus. Because of different viewpoints, the choice of words and formative methods are differ from field to field. Western medicine calls the formation of fetus 'development', the Buddhist scriptures call it 'Ru-tai', and oriental medicine calls it 'Yang-tai'. In spite of the different viewpoints, they have supplementary explanations to study fetus. As a result, we can understand the reasons why pregnancy pulse cannot help changing from month to month.
Purpose: This study was done to determine the effect of Tai-Chi Self-help program to progress of reduction of symptom, difficulty on activity by application Tai-Chi Self-help program for Fibromyalgia patients. Method: The study was used the method of one group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were 65 outpatients who were diagnosed as Fibromyalgia by ACR(1990) standard at K University Hospital, medical center. Tai-Chi self-help program was done for 8 weeks(three a week for 2 hours)through group meeting of 65 patients. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS for window12.0 program package. Results: The result of this study suggests that could increase in reduction of symptom and lower disturbance in ADL and life Satisfaction compared with the before Tai-Chi Self-help program education. Conclusion: Accoradingly Tai-Chi Self-help program could be used as a proper nursing strategy for Fibromyalgia patients.
Zhang Jie Bin had a lot of influences on the oriental medical world to write Lei Jing(類經) and Lei Jing Tu Yi(類經圖翼). His oriental medicine is based on profound philosophy. In this thesis, he understand the thousand year of chinese philosophy of ancient times in the reign of Song, Yuan, and Ming dynasty and his view of the world which is revealed in Oriental Medicine is regarded as Qi(氣) and then Li(理) is considered not an object for a special purpose but an attribute of Qi(氣). The base which a debater is able to suggest like this is that because of his saying that Tai Ji(太極) is Yin and Yang(陰陽). The basis of his world is Qi Yi Yuan Lun(氣一元論) of Yin Yang Wei Fen(陰陽未分)
Objectives : This study was to analyse the reasons for the early termination of our clinical trials that were to know the influences of Tai-chi on non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. Methods : We stopped the primary study of Tai-chi to observe the changes of non-motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease. So we carried out the survey to our participants of clinical trials. We conducted the survey about the patient's characteristics of usual exercise, experience of Tai-chi, appropriate time allocation, difficulties of proceeding the program and patient's opinion for the improvement of education. And the 4 questions about the contributiveness of Tai-chi for the Parkinson's disease, usability of supplied references, difficulties and time allocation of education were using the questionaries form of 5-point scale(Likert scale). Results : The results of survey showed that the benefits of Tai-chi program for the improvement of symptoms was $3.15{\pm}0.89$ and difficulty of lecture was $3.76{\pm}1.09$. 41% of participants answered that the motions of the Tai-chi is difficult to follow and 17% of participants felt the imbalance during the motion of Tai-chi. Conclusions : Participants replied that the Tai-chi is hard for the patients of Parkinson's disease and the time for the education was too short to keep doing exercise. Thus we have plan to educate the patients of Parkinson's disease with Tai-chi program consists of easier motion by developing ourselves or searching previous studies.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Tai-Chi for patients with chronic arthritis. This study was performed from 15th Sep. to 7th Nov. 2003, 57 arthritis patients were participated in the Tai-Chi program. Outcome measures were pain, fatigue, flexibility and balance. Data were analysed by $X^{2}-test$ and t-test. There were statistically significant in fatigue, and knee flexibility, but no significant differences were found in pain and balance. In conclusion, Tai-Chi program was proved to be an effective nursing intervention to increase the fatigue and flexibility. And the 12 forms of Tai-Chi program has been found safely applicable to the patients with chronic arthritis for 8 weeks.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a Tai Chi exercise program on physical function and physiological variables in patients with degenerative arthritis. Methods: The study utilized a nonequivalent control group with pretest-posttest design. Data collection was done with the elders from two welfare institutions in C-city between July I and September 22, 2007. The participants were assigned either to an experimental group (n=24) or to a control group (n=22). The experimental group participated in Tai Chi exercise for 60 minutes per session, twice a week for 12 weeks and the control group received the education about arthritis for 3 weeks. Results: Except for $VO_2max$, weight, and body fat rate, the elders in the experimental group showed significant improvement in physical function (grip strength, flexibility, balance), and physiological variables (BP) compared to the control group. Conclusion: The results suggest that Tai Chi exercise would partially improve physical function, and physiological variables. Further studies are needed to determine the effects on physical fitness and physiological variables after Tai Chi exercise in this population.
Purpose: The purpose of the study was to compare the effects of Tai Chi self-help program and Tai Chi exercise in patients with osteoarthritis. Methods: quasi experimental design was utilized for the study to compare the effects after implementing tai chi self-help program and Tai Chi exercise for 6 weeks. The subjects of the study was osteoarthritis patients who visited to two Public Health Centers in Gyunggi-do from August to December, 2005. Total of 25 OA patients agreed to participate in the study, and 10 tai chi self-help program group and 9 Tai Chi exercise group were included for the final analysis after 6 weeks. Tai Chi self-help program was provided twice a week, 2 hours per session (one hour for tai chi exercise, one hour for self help program) for 6 weeks, and Tai Chi exercise group was provided once a week, 2 hours per session for 6 weeks. Outcome measures include flexibility, 6 m walking, and balance. Mann-Whitney U test of SPSS WIN 11.0 was utilized to compare the group differences. Results: The subjects of both program participants were not improved in their arm flexibility, and the difference was not significant. Tai chi self-help group improved more in their 6 m walking ability than Tai Chi exercise group, but the difference was not significant (F=.000, p>.05). Tai chi self-help group improved more in their balance than Tai Chi exercise group, but the difference was not significant (Rt: U=.24, p>.05; Lt: F=2.60, p>.05). Conclusion: The provision of both Tai Chi self-help program and Tai Chi exercise can lead improvement of 6 m walking, and balance, but the group difference was not significant. A rigorous research design should be further utilized to identify the potential benefits for this population.
Objectives : Tai Chi for arthritis was developed in 1997 by Paul Lam, M.D. of family medicine in Australia. It is an exercise treatment program and a good approaching method for arthritis. However its application is limited to arthritis of knee joint only. Even there have been no clinical study in korean traditional medical society. The aim of this study is to investigate effect of the Tai Chi for arthritis on chronic pain of body. Methods : We designed this trial as objectives were (1) senior female over 60 years, (2) suffering for osteoarthritis and chronic body pain, (3) have no physical or mental dysfunctions (4) able to walk and exercise alone. Objectives mactched these criteria had been trained the Tai Chi for arthritis 2 hours a day for 21 weeks. Before and after training, pain of 8 joints (neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, waist, hip, knee, ankle) were estimated with the VAS(Visual Analog Scale). Results : Training the Tai Chi for arthritis relieved multiple joint pain(especially neck, lower back, shoulder, wrist and knee) and these were statistically significant. Conclusions : This study is a pilot study to investigate effect of the Tai Chi for arthritis on chronic pain of whole body. Absence of control group, and other scale to test joint function except VAS were limitations of this study. It is the first clinical approach about Tai Chi in korean medicine field, also the first study of Tai Chi for pain of the whole body.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether subjective symptoms, physical fitness, and emotional variables were improved after participating in a 6-week Tai Chi program in patients with rheumatoid arthritis. Methods: 23 rheumatoid arthritis patients participated in the Yang style Tai Chi for arthritis patients 90 minutes session conducted twice a week at the Arthritis Center of D University Hospital. The main outcome of current studies included self-reported scores of subjective symptoms(pain, sleep satisfaction, and fatigue), physical fitness tests, and depression (PHQ-9) and self-efficacy investigated with questionnaire before and after participating in Tai Chi. Results: After participating in Tai Chi, participants perceived lesser pain (t=2.61, p=.016) and fatigue (Z=-2.32, p=.020), and reported improved sleep satisfaction (t=-3.56, p=.002). In the physical fitness test, there were significant improvement in muscle strength (upper limb: t=-7.19, p<.001, lower limb: t=-4.86, p<.001), and balance (right t=-3.70, p=.001; left t=-2.30, p=.031). Depression (t=3.87, p=.001) and self-efficacy (Z=-3.44, p=.001) improved significantly after participating in Tai Chi. Conclusion: Tai Chi had beneficial effects on subjective symptoms and emotional variables as well as physical fitness. Therefore, the program could be recommended in the patients with rheumatoid arthritis.
Subject : Kim hong-kyung(金洪卿)'s view of eight extra meridians Object : Kim hong-kyung has not only deeply studied Saam acupuncture but also the function and characteristics of extra meridian at the same time. Especially, he has tried the study to connect yin yang wei qiao mai(陰陽維蹻脈) with Lee je-ma(李濟馬)'s four trigram constitution theory, therefore the author felt the need to make public the theory and started reserch on the theory. Method : I researched the physiological properties of extra meridians through the past eastern medical literature, I reported on the types of people to show well the properties of extra meridians gathering Kum-oh's verbal explanation when I had classes from him. Result : Kum-oh Kim hong-kyung defined meridians as passways of consciousness and feeling, he interpreted 12 meridians and extra meridians with the view of mind, which has very important meanings in the history of acupuncture in the point of first trial to interpret meridians from this view. He explained Ren mai(任脈) and Du mai(督脈) are meridians which show clearly properties of yin-yang to appear trusts of affirmation and distrusts of denial in the mind, as Ren(任) means entrusting and Du(督) means supervising in English. He explained Chong mai(衝脈) is the meridian representing impulsive man that has a meaning of impulse as being suggested the name of Chong mai, because Chong mai is borrowed from Foot shao yin kidney meridian(足少陰腎經). Dai mai(帶脈) is the meridian representing the characteristics of woman that has a meaning of binding as being suggested from the name of Dai mai which acts when people have something on their flank or they are pregnant, because Dai mai borrowed from Foot shao yang gall bladder meridian. He thought that four trigram divided from yin and yang is innate trigram, so Yang wei mai(陽維脈), Yin wei mai(陰維脈), Yang qiao mai(陽蹻脈), Yin qiao mai(陰蹻脈) among extra meridians have connections with Tai-yang ren(太陽人), Tai-yin ren(太陰人), Shao-yin ren(少陰人), Shao-yang ren(少陽人) of Four trigram constitution theory respectively which was created by Lee je-ma. He explained yang means opponents and wei(維) means binding. Yang wei mai is the meridian to be active when opponents bind or intervene in you, also the meridian is well active to the people who easily criticize others who are rude, to the people who well refuse restraints from organization. Because he explained yin means me and wei(維) means binding. Yin wei mai is the meridian to be active when I bind and intervene in opponents. He also state that the meridian is easily active to the people who have a tendency to gather people and make party apparatus by nature. He explained Yang qiao mai is the meridian to be active in the situation that people are waiting for others to bridge gap because yang means opponents and qiao(蹻) which has a meaning of standing on one's tiptoes means bridging gap between people. He also state the meridian is easily active to Shao yin ren who has a tendency to be passive, to easily settle down and not to move by nature. He explained Yin qiao mai is the meridian to be active in the situation that I bridge gap between me and others to make friends, because yin means me and qiao(蹻) which has a meaning of standing on one's tiptoes means bridging gap between me and others. He also state the meridian is easily active to Shao yang ren who is active in every business and who has remarkable ability to make friends. Conclusion : Kim hong-kyung stated the physiological properties of extra meridians as below. Ren mai is the meridian representing positive confidence which is easily active when people have a mind to trust others, Du mai is the meridian representing negative distrust which is easily active when people have doubts. Chong mai is the meridian representing the characteristics of man that has impulsive characteristics. Dai mai is the meridian representing the characteristics of woman to be easily active when she is pregnant. Yang wei mai has close connections with Tai-yang ren who has a tendency to refuse restraints from others and to criticize on opponent's remarks and behaviors that are wrong. Yin wei mai has close connections with Tai-yin ren, as the meridian is active in the situation that people enjoy restraining and intervening in others. Yang qiao mai has close connections with Shao yin ren, as the meridian is active to the people who are negative and passive by nature. Yin qiao mai has close connections with Shao yang yin who has a strong tendency to make friends easily by nature.
