Weldability of HY type High Strength-Toughness Steel (HY계 고강도 고인성강의 용접성)

  • Weldability of DS100 and HY type high strength-toughness steel plates, tentatively produced as domestic production, was investigated. DS100 and DS130A had nearly same hardenability in HAZ in spite of its difference in Ceq. Based upon the y-groove test results, cold cracking susceptibility of DS130 was superior to that of DS100 because of its lower hydrogen level in weld metal. Solidification cracking tested by the Trans-Varestraint test was occured in all of the weld metals, and its susceptibility was high in the row of DS100, DS130A and DS130B. However, no liquation cracking and ductility-dip cracking tested by the Longi-Varestraint test with 6.0% augmented strain were detected in base metal and reheated weld metal. Toughness in the GMA welding joint was satisfied with the relative Mill Spec, even though welded joint of DS100 had relatively low impact energy especially at the weld metal.

  • This C-ring test, normally employed for evaluating susceptibility to stress-corrosion cracking, was determined to be a suitable small scale test to evaluate PWHT(Post-Weld Heat Treatment) cracking susceptibility. This test is possible to incorporate an actual weld, to introduce a notch into the coarse grained HAZ(Heat Affected Zone), to load the coarse grained HAZ any level of stress ad, most importantly, since the C-ring is an approximately constant strain type test, the stress decreases with time at temperature in a manner similar to that of an actual steel weldment. The procedure employed in making the C-ring was presented in the experimental procedure section, however, several points deserve further discussion. The walls of the weld groove are made along radial lines form the center of th var in order to obtain an HAZ which is oriented perpendicular to the walls of the machined C-ring. Therefore, the plane of maximum stress will be aligned through the HAZ and, therefore, crack propagation will not be forced to deviate form the plane of maximum stress in order to remain in the coarse grained HAZ as is the case with the Y groove test.

  • The explosive forming has been used for many year to expand tubes into tubesheets. this process has demonstrated ability to direct carefully the energy of an explosive to expand tubes into tubesheet holes without damaging the tubesheet and without causing the excessive cold work at the tube I.D. that is normally associated with mechanical expansion. The success of explosive tube expansion provided the background for the development of the explosive tube plug. The main results are as follows : (1) The optimum explosives and explosive qualities are PETN, RDX, HMS and about 18~31gr/ft of explosive plugging in nuclear steam generator. (2) Explosive plugging's thickness is 0.9~1.8mm. If groove of 0.4 mm formed in plug outside, For the hydraulic leakage is go up, explosive plugging of formed groove are applicate tube and tubrplate. (3) Sheath is designed on the polyethylene of low density, In thermal impact test of the $430^\circ{C}$, hydraulic leakage is $300kg/cm^2$. (4) About 10~60mm oxide inclusions are existed on the space of explosive plug and tube protect to the leakage.

A characteristics of base metal and weldment of 100ksi class high strength steel (100ksi급 고장력강의 모재 및 용접부 특성)

  • A study was performed to investigate the properties of base metal and weldment for two HSLA steels and one HY-100 steel. Tensile, yield strength and elongation of HSLA-A steel were superior to those of HY-100 steel and yield ratios in HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were higher than HY-100 steel owing to the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu phase. The impact energy of HSLA-A steel was greater at all aging temperatures than that of HY-100 steel. HSLA-A and HY-100 steels had low impact transition temperature of about -l$25^{\circ}C$ and high upper shelf energy, The peak hardness of weldment in HSLA-A, HSLA-B and HY-100 steels were Hv 299, Hv 275 and Hv 441, respectively. The hardenability of HY-100 steel was largest due to the higher amount of carbon. The y-groove test showed that HSLA steels had superior resistance to cold cracking. Toughness of weld joint at the F. L. and F. L. +1mm in HSLA-A was almost the same as HY-100, but those at F. L.+3mm and F. L.+5mm was greater in HSLA-A steel.

  • In this paper, 3-dimensional electromagnetic numerical analysis is performed about the eddy current(EC) array probe characteristic which is the next generation probe for accurate diagnosis of steam generator(SG) in nuclear power plants(NPPs). ASME(American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Standard and X-probe combo calibration standard tube are selected for acquisition of eddy current testing(ECT) signals and this result of compared with the real test signals for reasonability of result. Based on the analysis result of calibration standard tube, ECT signals that are about the defects of pitting, stress corrosion cracking(SCC), multiple SCC and wear is obtained. Material of specimen was Inconel 600 which is usually used for SG tubes in NPPs. The operation frequency of 300 kHz were used. The signal characteristics could be observed according to the various defects. The results in this paper can be helpful when the ECT signals from EC array probe are evaluated and analyzed.

A Study on the Materials Characteristics of SM570TMC Plates (SM570TMC 강재의 재료특성에 관한 연구)

  • There is increasing need for high-strength steel especially for the high-rise steel building structure. High- strength steels, however, may have mechanical properties that are significantly different from those of the conventional steels.The application of high-strength steels to building structures should be reviewed as to whether inelastic behavior equivalent to that of conventional steels can be attained or not. In this study, SM570TMC steel, which was developed recently in Korea, was tested to evaluate mechanical properties and welding characteristics for use as a structural steel. Yield phenomenon of SM570TMC steel, which is continuous yielding, is quite different from that of conventional steel. The distributions of yield strength of SM570TMC steel were uniform regardless of thickness, while the minimum yield strength was 440MPa. Also, the flat distributions of hardness in z-direction were found to comprise one of the important properties. Results of the charpy impact tests at -5oC revealed toughness values of SM570TMC steel, which were higher than those of equivalent as rolled steel. Carbon equivalent(Ceq) values of SM570TMC steel, which were related to welding performance, were lower than those of equivalent as rolled steel.

  • Primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) has been observed around the weld region of control rod drive mechanism (CRDM) nozzles in nuclear power plants overseas. The weld has a J-shaped groove and it connects the CRDM nozzle with the reactor vessel upper head (RVUH). It is a dissimilar metal weld (DMW), because the CRDM is made of alloy 600 and the RVUH is made of carbon steel. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) was performed to estimate the stress condition around the weld region. Generally, it is known that a high tensile region is more susceptible to PWSCC. FEA was performed as for the condition of welding, hydrostatic test and normal operation successively to observe how the residual stress changes due to plant condition. The FEA results show that a high tensile stress region is formed around the weld starting point on the inner surface and around the weld stop point on the outer surface.
