Composite materials, known for their excellent mechanical properties and lightweight characteristics, are applied in various engineering fields. Recently, efforts have been made to develop an automotive battery protection panel using a plain-woven composite composed of glass fiber and polypropylene to reduce the weight of automobiles. However, excessive warpage occurs during the GF/PP compression molding process, which makes car assembly challenging. This study aims to develop a model that predicts the warpage during the compression molding process. Obtaining out-of-plane properties such as elastic or shear modulus, essential for predicting warpages, is tricky. Existing mechanical methods also have limitations in calculating these properties for woven composite materials. To address this issue, finite element analysis is conducted using representative volume elements (RVE) for woven composite materials. A warpage prediction model is developed based on the estimated physical properties of GF/PP composite materials obtained through representative volume elements. This model is expected to be used for reducing warpages in the compression molding process.

Mode II fracture toughness, $K_{IIC}$, of single-ply triaxially woven fabric (TWF) composite due to tow waviness and anisotropy effects were numerically and experimentally studied. The numerical wavy beam network model with anisotropic material description denoted as TWF anisotropic was first validated with experimental Mode II fracture toughness test employing the modified compact tensile shear specimen configuration. 2D planar Kagome and TWF isotropic models were additionally constructed for various relative densities, crack lengths, and cell size parameters for examining effects due to tow waviness and anisotropy. $K_{IIC}$ generally increased with relative density, the inverse of cell size, and crack length. It was found that both the waviness and anisotropy of tow inflict a drop in $K_{IIC}$ of TWF. These effects were more adverse due to the waviness of tow compared to anisotropy.
The CFRP composite has unique properties that offer high strength and stiffness, even though it has light weight. Therefore it can be used in many industrial applications. When mechanical fasteners are used for joining composites, high stress concentrations appear near the edge of holes prepared for accommodating structural bolts and rivets. This presence of high stress concentrations can be a source of damage. The aim of this work is to evaluate fracture behavior and patterns of plain woven CFRP with circular hole and repairing patch element. The maximum strength and pattern for the plain woven carbon composite specimen with the repaired circular hole were examined. From the results, we show that repairing of the CFRP composite specimen with ($\pi$) 3~5 mm of circular hole diameter results in load rising effect and the repairing is more effective as bigger hole specimen.
To improve the properties of FRP composite materials, the hybrid prepreg with non-woven tissue (NWT) is developed. The hybrid prepreg consists of undirectional prepreg and NWT prepreg. The NWT prepreg is made by compounding the NWT and polymer resin, which is similar to the production method of FRP prepreg. The NWT has short fibers which are discretely distributed with in-plane random orientation. The stiffness and strength of NWT composites are lower than those of continuously fibrous composites. The strengthening technique and fabricating technique for the hybrid prepreg are described in this work. The mechanical characteristics of hybrid composites with NWT are discussed and compared with those of the FRP composites.
In resin infusion process(RIP), the fiber and the resin are in contact with each other for an impregnation step and often results in flow-induced defects such as poor fiber wetting and void formation. Resin flow characteristics in transverse direction and process modeling for woven fabric were studied, and the process modeling was applied to the manufacturing of hybrid composite materials. This study also considered the compressibility of woven fabrics in a series of compression force, and it was fitted well to an elastic model equation. Void formation was varied with the processing conditions in the stage of manufacturing composites using RIP. It was concluded from this study that proper combination of pressure build-up and dynamic heating condition makes important factor for flow-induced composite processing.
In this study, a cyclic tensile test on a notched butterfly specimen made of woven glass fiber composite was performed on a modified Arcan fixture. During the mechanical test, the sample was monitored with a hybrid stereoscopic system comprised of two visible lights and one infrared camera. The visible light cameras were employed for kinematic measurements using a finite-element-based multiview correlation technique. A semi-hybrid correlation approach was followed, providing Lagrangian temperature fields of the Region of Interest. Due to the complex composite architecture and specimen shape, localized shearing was observed during the tensile loading. Furthermore, asymmetrical damage developed around the notches as revealed by localized strains and thermal hot spots.
The accurate permeability for preform is critical to model and design the impregnation of fluid resin in the composite manufacturing process. In this study, the in-plane and transverse permeability for a woven fabric are predicted numerically through the coupled flow model which combines microscopic with macroscopic flow. The microscopic and macroscopic flow which are flows within the micro-unit and macro-unit cell, respectively, are calculated by using 3-D CVFEM(control volume finite element method). To avoid checker-board pressure field and improve the efficiency on numerical computation, A new interpolation function for velocity is proposed on the basis of analytic solutions. The permeability of plain woven fabric is measured through unidirectional flow experiment and compared with the permeability calculated numerically. Based on the good agreement of the results, the relationships between the permeability and the structures of preform such as the fiber volume fraction and stacking effect can be understood. The reverse and the simple stacking are taken in account. Unlike past literatures, this study is based on more realistic unit cell and the improved prediction of permeability can be achieved. It is observed that in-plane flow is more dominant than transverse flow in the real flow through preform and the stacking effect of multi-layered preform is negligible. Consequently, the proposed coupled flow model can be applied to modeling of real composite materials processing.
In molding of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites, it is very difficult to impregnate between the reinforcements and the matrix since the matrix has a high melting temperature and high viscosity. Therefore, most of composite molding processes are divided in the manufacturing processes of intermediate materials called prepreg and the forming of products from intermediate materials. The divided process requires additional facilities and thermoforming, and they increase the cycle time and cost of composite products. These problems can be resolved by combining the continuous fiber-reinforced composite molding process with injection molding. However, when a composite material is manufactured by inserting woven fabric into the injection mold, poor impregnation occurs on the surface of the molded product. It affects the properties of the composites. In this paper, through an impregnation experiment using cores with different heat transfer rates and pore densities, the reason for the poor impregnation was confirmed, and molding experiments were conducted to produce composite with improved surface impregnation by inserting the mesh. And also, the surface impregnation and deformation of composites molded using different types of mesh were compared with each other.
In this study, the effect of molding condition on the tensile properties for plain woven hemp fiber reinforced green composite was examined. The tensile properties of the composite were compared with those of the plain woven jute fiber composite fabricated by the same process. Emulsion type biodegradable resin or polypropylene sheet was used as matrix. The composites were processed by the compression molding where the molding temperature and its heating time were changed from 160 to $190^{\circ}C$ and from 15 to 25 min, respectively. The following results were obtained from the experiment. The tensile property of hemp fiber reinforced polypropylene is improved in comparison with polypropylene bulk. The strength of composite is about 2.6 times that of the resin bulk specimen. Hemp fiber is more effective than jute fiber as reinforcement for green composite from the viewpoint of strength. The molding temperature and time are suitable below $180^{\circ}C$ and 20 min for hemp fiber reinforced green composite. Hemp fiber green composite has a tendency to decrease its tensile strength when fiber content is over 50 wt%.
