Solid state deformation of PZT is effective for the micron scale displacement. Inch-worm gets large linear displacement by incrementally summing displacements of PZT actuators. Dynamic stiffness of inch-worm is generally low compared to its driving condition due to the small size and light weight of inch-worm. Mechanical vibration induced by low stiffness may degenerate the motion accuracy of the inch-worm. In this paper, dynamic characteristics of the inch-worm are modeled by using the frequency domain curve fitting based on the experimental frequency response function. SMC (sliding mode control) is examined for motion control of the inch-worm. Simulation and experimental results show that the inch-worm with SMC scheme is feasible for the precise displacement device.
This study was performed to determine physicochemical and sensory quality of low-fat pork loaf containing silkworm powder and vegetable worm (Paecilomyces japonica). Total 2% of fat replacer (soy protein isolate:maltodextrin:$\kappa$-carrageenan:water=1:0.5:0.5:10, w/v) was added. The loaf was separated into CTL (control), T1 (0.2% silkworm powder), T2 (0.2% vegetable worm), T3 (0.4% silkworm powder), T4 (0.4% vegetable worm), T5 (0.1% silkworm powder+0.1% vegetable worm), and T6 (0.2% silkworm powder+0.2% vegetable worm). Pork loaf of T3 showed the highest pH value and cooking loss of pork loaves containing silkworm and vegetable worm was higher than control at day 5. 2-Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances of T2 and T5 showed significantly lower values than control and those additives may reduce lipid oxidation of meat. Overall acceptability was not adversely influenced by silkworm powder and vegetable worm at day 0 and 5. These results indicated that those silkworm powder and vegetable worm could be utilized for pork product industry.

Schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections are widespread diseases of public health importance in Tanzania. A study on perceptions and practices related to schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections was undertaken among a community population of Kome Island in Sengerema District, north-western Tanzania, where intestinal schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections are endemic. Schistosomiasis and intestinal worm-related perceptions and practices were assessed before and 3 years after implementation of a participatory hygiene and sanitation transformation (PHAST) intervention as a control measure. Data were obtained from baseline and post-intervention knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) questionnaire surveys conducted twice in 2009 and 2012 among 82 individuals aged ${\geq}15years$. We found significant increases in respondents' knowledge of the cause, transmission, symptoms, health consequences, and prevention of schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections after PHAST intervention. The increase in respondents' knowledge on almost all aspects of the said infections was translated into actions to control schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections. This has not been achieved by chance, but due to well-designed and locally-adapted PHAST intervention. We conclude that despite criticisms, PHAST approach is still useful in empowering communities to control water, sanitation, and hygiene related infectious diseases such as schistosomiasis and intestinal worm infections.
The security threat posed by worms has steadily increased in recent years. This paper discusses the application of the optimal and sub-optimal Internet worm control via Pontryagin's maximum principle. To this end, a control variable representing the optimal treatment strategy for infectious hosts is introduced into the two-factor worm model. The numerical optimal control laws are implemented by the multiple shooting method and the sub-optimal solution is computed using genetic algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed optimal and sub-optimal strategies. It also provides a theoretical interpretation of the practical experience that the maximum implementation of treatment in the early stage is critically important in controlling outbreaks of Internet worms. Furthermore, our results show that the proposed sub-optimal control can lead to performance close to the optimal control, but with much simpler strategies for long periods of time in practical use.

Ever since the network-based malicious code commonly known as a 'worm' surfaced in the early part of the 1980's, its prevalence has grown more and more. The RCS (Random Constant Spreading) worm has become a dominant, malicious virus in recent computer networking circles. The worm retards the availability of an overall network by exhausting resources such as CPU capacity, network peripherals and transfer bandwidth, causing damage to an uninfected system as well as an infected system. The generation and spreading cycle of these worms progress rapidly. The existing studies to counter malicious code have studied the Microscopic Model for detecting worm generation based on some specific pattern or sign of attack, thus preventing its spread by countering the worm directly on detection. However, due to zero-day threat actualization, rapid spreading of the RCS worm and reduction of survival time, securing a security model to ensure the survivability of the network became an urgent problem that the existing solution-oriented security measures did not address. This paper analyzes the recently studied efficient dynamic network. Essentially, this paper suggests a model that dynamically controls the RCS worm using the characteristics of Power-Law and depth distribution of the delivery node, which is commonly seen in preferential growth networks. Moreover, we suggest a model that dynamically controls the spread of the worm using information about the depth distribution of delivery. We also verified via simulation that the load for each node was minimized at an optimal depth to effectively restrain the spread of the worm.
We present a novel method to model the body posture of a worm for vision-based automatic monitoring and analysis. The worm considered in this study is a Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), which is popularly used for research in biological science and engineering. We model the posture by an open chain of a few curved or rigid line segments, in contrast to previously published approaches wherein a large number of small rigid elements are connected for the modeling. Each link segment is represented by only two parameters: an arc angle and an arc length for a curved segment, or an orientation angle and a link length for a straight line segment. Links in the proposed method can be readily related using the Denavit-Hartenberg convention due to similarities to the kinematics of an articulated manipulator. Our method was tested with real worm images, and accurate results were obtained.
In this paper, we suggest a new locomotive mechanism fur self-propelling robotic endoscope which could substitute conventional endoscope. Many researchers proposed inchworm-like mechanism for self-propelling robotic endoscope. But it could not be commercialized because they did not solve the limitation caused by clamping. Therefore, we suggest a new radial-type locomotive mechanism with worm. It can propel itself in any situation and take passive-steering because of radial type. In addition, it can be miniaturized with worm. In this paper, we evaluate the mechanism in the dead pig colon as well as under various environments, and verify the performance fur robotic endoscope.
A worm screw is widely used in a geared motor unit for motion conversion from rotation to linear motion. For mass production of a high quality worm, the current roll forming process is substituted with the milling cutter process. Since the milling cutter process enables the integration of all machining operations of worm manufacturing on a CNC(Computer Numerical Control) lathe, productivity can be remarkably improved. The tooling system for side milling cutter on the CNC lathe to improve machinability is developed. However, the runout of spindle and cutting tips are important factors to be considered for producing high quality worms because the tooling system has multiple tips. In this study, surface roughness variations accuracy according to runout was investigated in side milling cutter for worm screw. The result shows by simulation and experiment.

For adaptability of various worms machining, the tool-workpiece interference simulation system based on a tool-tip trajectory model is developed. The developed simulation system is verified through several kinds of worms and experimental results.
