  • This research develops the robot for the machining work. For machining work(cutting, milling, grilling, etc.), a robot manipulator is constructed by combining a parallel and a serial mechanism to increase stiffness as well as enlarge workspace. Based on the geometric constraints, this paper develops the formulation for inverse/direct kinematics and Jacobian to design and control a robot. Workspace is also analyzed to prove the advantage of the proposed robot.

  • The Master-Slave manipulator is generally used as a remote handling device in the hot cell, in which the high level radio-active materials such as spent fuels are handled. This study describes a workspace mapping algorithm for a kinematically dissimilar master-slave system The algorithm provides the operator to guide the slave's end effector into unreachable regions which can appear due to the mismatch of workspace between the master and slave manipulator. A spaceball was used for the universal master device, and it can detect the slight fingertip force applied on the ball and also resolve the applied force. The spaceball device was also used to move 3D images instantaneously and simultaneou...

  • Singular points are those at which the determinant of a Jacobian matrix is zero. A parallel manipulator gains mostly an extra DOF at the singular points, where it can not be properly controlled. In this study, singular points of a cubic parallel manipulator are illustrated by obtaining the determinant of a Jacobian matrix mathematically, and the singular points of the manipulator are found to be three separate planes in a 3D space. The dependency among links for each singular point is determined by applying linear algebra. Also, the singular points and workspace of the cubic parallel manipulator are plotted to check if the workspace contain singular points.

  • The concept of dynamic tracking line is proposed as the feasible tracking region for a robot in a robot-conveyor system, which takes the conveyor speed into consideration. This paper presents an effective method to identify the dynamic tracking line in a robotic workcell. The maximum line speed of a robot is derived in an analytic form using the parameterized dynamics and kinematics of the manipulator, and some of its properties are established mathematically. The identification problem of the dynamic tracking line is then formulated as a root-solving problem for a single-variable equation, and solved by using a simple numerical technique. Finally, numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the methodology and its applications in workspace specification.

  • The current method for pavement sign marking operations is labor-intensive and very dangerous due to the exposure of workers to passing traffic. It also requires blocking traffic for a long period of time resulting serious traffic jam. This paper deals with the development of a robotic system for automating the pavement sign painting operations. The robotic system consists of gantry frame equipped with transverse drive rail and automatic paint spray system. The workspace of the gantry robot is extended to one-lane width with the transverse rail system. This research also includes the development of font data structures that contain the shape information of pavement signs, such as Korean letters, English letters and symbols. The robot path is generated with this font data through the procedures of scaling up/down and partitioning the signs to be painted depending on the workspace size.

  • In this paper, we determine the design criteria of haptic device considering the human haptic system and determine the design specifications. We developed a new 2DOF haptic device based on the specifications. It has the wide workspace, statically-balanced, constant inertia matrix, well-conditioned Jacobian matrix and so on. There also is not singularity point within workspace of the device. We show that it has better performance than other 2DOF haptic device in the many aspects.

  • In this paper, an unilateral teleoperation system using an universal master arm is developed. This system is composed of an universal master arm, a slave arm and a telerobot controller. The universal master arm has a vertically articulated type link structure, while an industrial robot is used as a slave arm. As the shapes of master arm and slave arm are different, the workspace mapping is needed, which maps the workspace of master arm to that of slave arm. Experimental results show that the slave arm of the developed system effectively follows the operator's motion.

  • A genetic algorithm for global and local path planning and collision avoidance of mobil robot in unstructured workspace is proposed. The genetic algorithm searches for a path in the entire and continuous free space and unifies global path planning and local path planning. The simulation shows the proposed method is an efficient and effective method when compared with the traditional collision avoidance algorithms.

  • It is common among users to have multiple computing devices as well as to access their files or do work at different locations. To achieve file consistency as well as mobility in this scenario, an efficient approach for workspace synchronization should be used. However, file synchronization alone cannot guarantee the mobility of work environment which allows activities to be resumed at any place and time. This paper proposes a ubiquitous synchronization approach which provides cloud-based access to a user's workspace. Efficient synchronization is achieved by combining session monitoring with file system management. Experimental results show that the proposed mechanism outperforms Cloud Master-replica Synchronization in terms of number of I/O operations, CPU utilization, as well as the average and maximum latencies in responding to client requests.
