  • Physicochemical properties and copper (II) adsorption ability of two oakwood and two pinewood charcoals, which were manufactured in traditional mode and commercialized in Korea, were examined pHs of these four wood charcoals were between 9.5 and 9.8. In the elemental contents of the wood charcoal, the contents of carbon atom (C) in the four samples were between 85-90%, while the content of hydrogen atom (H) in pinewood charcoal of the company 'S' was 1.62% and this value was three time higher than those of other samples. For iodine adsorption and specific surface area, the pinewood charcoal sample showed higher values than those of the oakwood charcoals. In the copper (II) ion adsorption in aqueous solution, the adsorption rate was increased by the increase of treated amounts of charcoal, treatment time, and pH.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of delignification on properties of lignocellulose nanofibers (LCNFs) prepared by wet disk-milling (WDM) after steam and ozone oxidation pre-treatments and their nanopaper sheets. Delignification treatment was effective to obtain fine morphology with uniform fiber diameter less than 35 nm without aggregation, and increased the specific surface area (SSA) and filtration time of LCNFs. In particular, SSA and filtration time of the LCNFs prepared by WDM after ozone pretreatment increased 1.5 and 5.4 times after further delignification. Delignification also increased whiteness and decreased the redness of nanopaper sheets. The highest color difference (41.9) before and after the delignification was obtained in LCNFs prepared by WDM after the steam pretreatment. Tensile properties of nanopaper sheets were also increased by further delignification. The highest tensile strength was found to be 142 MPa.

  • To make up original defects of the wooden materials for decks, and to supply the wooden material for outdoor, we fabricated preservative treated plywood(PTP). Copper azole (CUAZ-1) preservative was treated with a normal full-cell process. Bond Strength of PTP was not affected after the preservative treatment. The anti-fungal efficiency and dimensional stability were obtained from PTP. A little discoloration of the surface was detected, but the dimensional change or peel bonded area off were not observed after accelerated weathering test. Although some strength of PTP was reduced after 17 months of field exposure, the PTP should be applicable for outdoor applications.

  • Plant can detoxify the effect of the volatile organic compounds (VOC) such as formaldehyde and toluene, however, mechanisms of VOC detoxification are largely unknown in plant system. This study was performed to investigate phenotypic changes of Arabidopsis seedlings upon treatment of either formalin or toluene. Formalin treatment up to twenty four hours didn't cause any significant phenotypic damages on the leaf surface of 27 DAG Arabidopsis seedlings. However, the protein profile of formalin-treated seedlings was significantly different from that of mock control. Using automated electrophoresis system, the molecular weight of each formaldehyde-responsive protein (FRP) was predicted and its formaldehyde-dependent expression was confirmed at transcription level by quantitative real-time RT-PCR analysis. Four FRPs isolated in this study are the novel proteins with unknown functions but highly homologous to the stress-related proteins.

  • Cotton fabrics were treated with gelatin to enhance dyeability and color strength when using Caesalpinia sappan dye. Gelatin was used as the protein and a pad-dry- cure method was used for the treatment process (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14g/l concentration). Pretreated fabrics were mordanted with 10% alum. Fabrics were then dyed with freeze-dried sappan wood water extract powder form. Dyed samples were assessed in regards to dyeing behavior and color fastness. Comparing untreated and gelatin treated samples from the SEM images indicated that the Gelatin treatment (10g/l) resulted in an enhanced surface roughness that was relative to that of untreated cotton. Padding cotton with gelatin at 6g/l concentration afforded dyed fabrics with a 2 times increase in the K/S value over that of untreated fabrics. All dyed samples were red color with a significant enhancement in the sample color strength (K/S) being observed for pretreated samples. pH values favor dye absorption with pH 7 yielding the highest color strength. Dyeing at an elevated temperature resulted in a lower color strength and reddish-dull color. Longer dyeing times created greater color strengths for untreated and gelatin treated cotton. Increased dye concentrations resulted in higher K/S values for both gelatin treated and untreated cotton. As for color fastness, gelatin treated and untreated cotton fabrics dyed with sappan wood extract showed a relatively low rating in washing fastness (color change 1 rating), light fastness (1 rating), and rubbing fastness (wet:1-2, dry:3-4 rating).

  • We investigated the effect of polyethylene glycol(PEG) treatment of preservative treated green japanese cedar(Cryptomeria japonica) round posts on their preservative penetration and check formation during the air drying. The round rods were dip-treated in 10% preservative solution of Basilit CFK for 1 day, followed by application(3, 5, and 10 times) with 50% PEG-400 solution, and then dried for 30 days under natural conditions. The rate of preservative penetration into sapwood was a low by 23.2% without PEG treatment, whereas that was a high by about 51.2~64.5% with PEG treatment. From these results, it was assumed that PEG played an affirmative role in the penetration of preservative components loaded onto the surface of round rods by dipping. During the air drying, the formation of drying checks decreased significantly with increasing application times of PEG. Even though some drying checks in PEG treated rods were developed, the number and size of checks was reduced remarkably by PEG treatment. After 2 months of outdoor exposure, PEG treatment failed to reduce checking in preservative-treated rods whereas finishing of polyurethane resin lacquer after PEG treatment was significantly effective in preventing check development.

  • Recently, the importance of flame retardation treatment technology has been emphasized due to the increase in urban fire accidents and fire damage incidents caused by building exterior materials. Particularly, in the utilization of wood-based building materials, the flame retarding treatment technology is more importantly evaluated. An Intumescent system is one of the non-halogen flame retardant treatment technologies and is a system that realizes flame retardancy through foaming and carbonization layer formation. To apply the Intumescent system, composite material was prepared by using Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) as a matrix. To enhance the flame retardant properties of the Intumescent system, a nano-clay was applied together. Composite materials with Intumescent system and nano - clay technology were processed into sheet - like test specimens, and then a new structure of cross laminated timber with improved flame retardant properties was fabricated. In the evaluation of combustion characteristics of composite materials using Intumescent system, it was confirmed that the maximum heat emission was reduced efficiently. Depending on the structure attached to the surface, the CLT had two stages of combustion. Also, it was confirmed that the maximum calorific value decreased significantly during the deep burning process. These characteristics are expected to have a delayed combustion diffusion effect in the combustion process of CLT. In order to improve the performance, the flame retardation treatment technique for the surface veneer and the optimization technique of the application of the composite material are required. It is expected that it will be possible to develop a CLT structure with improved fire characteristics.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the efficacy of surface spraying of antimicrobial solutions, oil and application of both on performance of broiler chicken under heat stress and reared on leaves and ground corn cobs as two alternative bedding materials. Six hundred seventy five day-old straightrun Arian broiler chicks were randomly assigned to 45 pens (at density of $0.09m^2/bird$) in an open sided partially-controlled shed. Three bedding materials viz. wood shavings (WS), ground corn cobs (GCC) (1.5 cm in length) and leaves were subjected to surface spraying of oil ($0.4L/m^2$ animal food grade sunflower oil), anti microbial solutions (3%) and mix treatment of both. Data on performance traits, incidence of breast and food pad lesions and litter characteristics were gathered and analysed in an appropriate factorial arrangements. Body weight at 56 d, feed intake up to 14 d, litter moisture at 28 d, litter pH at 14 d and litter temperature at 14 and 56 d were significantly influenced by litter type (p<0.05). Litter treatment revealed significant impact on body weight at 28, 42 and 56 d, feed intake during 29-42 and 1-42 d, mortality up to 56 d, litter temperature at 28 and 56 d, and litter pH at 28 and 56 d. Leaves and ground corn cobs have shown good potential as alternative bedding materials for rearing broilers. Surface spraying of antimicrobial solutions, oil and applying both were not effective tools to promote the broiler's health and performance. Meat type poultry growers and integrators are considered as primary audiences of the results achieved.

  • The reconstituted tobacco leaves(RTL) playa major part in the control of the low density and tar cigarette. Reconstituted tobacco manufactured by the papermaking process has much higher filling power than homogenized tobacco manufactured by slurry and rolling process. Fragile reconstituted tobaccos are liable to lead to small particles detrimental for filling power so they must be properly flexible. This work was conducted to determine the effect of CaCO$_3$ addition in paper-making process on the filling power and the flexibility of the reconstituted tobacco and to obtain the fundamental informations for improving the quality of domestic reconstituted tobacco. We analyzed the wood fiber species, the filler level, the fiber length, the fineness level and observed the surface of the RTL. From the obtained results, we could determine that foreign reconstituted tobacco was manufactured by blending softwood with hardwood and over 8% of calcium carbonate at the addition level. The domestic RTL has much higher fine fiber level by 23.2 % than that of foreign, so the refining treatment process and the condition must be reoptimized for the improvement of RTL quality.

  • Attempts were made to investigate the conditions of mycelia of one low-temperature type strain and one high-temperature type strain of shiitake showing poor fruit-body formation in bed-log, and to survey harmful microorganisms formed on the log surface in Gapyung County, Korea. When tested the growing ability of mycelia, the low-temperature type strain showed ca. 1.1% decrease compared with preserved original strain. And, the high-temperature type one showed ca. 8.0% decrease. The growth of isolated mycelia was tested in sawdust medium. The high-temperature type strain showed ca. 10.8% decrease compared with original strain, and the low-temperature type one showed ca. 25.1% decrease. Weight reduction rate was investigated. The high-temperature strain showed ca. 20.1% decrease and the low-temperature one ca. 19.0%. When compared with non-treatment, original high-temperature type strain showed 107.0% decrease, the isolated high-temperature type strain 49.5%, original low-temperature type one 85.4%, isolated low-temperature type one 50.0%. As the results of confrontation culture, the high-temperature type strain and the low-temperature type one were same as the original ones, respectively. And, in the bed-logs, Hypoxylon truncatum, Coriolus versicolor, Inonotus xeranticus, Daedaleopsis tricolor, Graphostroma platystoma, two species of Myxomycetes, Trichoderma sp. Hypoxylon fragiforme, H. howeianum, and Nitschkia confertula were observed as harmful microorganisms, and the bed-logs were not in good condition.
