  • This study was performed to determine the characteristics of physical and mechanical properties of domestic wood based materials; plywood, particleboard, medium density fiberboard. Main items of tested properties were panel size, moisture content, water absorption, linear expansion and thickness swelling, glue bond shear strength, bending properties(stress at proportional limit, modulus of rupture. modulus of elasticity), tensile strength, screw holding strength, and internal bond as neccessary. the results were discussed mainly with Korean Standards. The obtained conclusions are as follows; 1. Length and width of 3mm thin plywood(3-ply) and 12mm thick plywood(7-ply) were satished with KS-standard, but thicknesses of these panels were not- passed tolerance limit except one of eight makers. 2. Length and width of particleboard and medium density fiberboard were greater than the tolerance limit value of KS standard, but the thicknesses of these panels were passed this value. 3. Moisture contents of 12mm thick and 3mm thin plywood were satisfied with KS-standard except one mill made 3mm thin plywood. 4. Moisture absortion of plywood was not passed tolerance limit of KS-standard but particleboard was satisfied with this standard value. 5. Dry and wet shear strengths in glue bond of 3mm thin plywood were not reached to KS-standard, but those of 12mm thick plywood were sufficiently satisfied with KS standrad. 6. Modulus of ruptures, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood, and particleboard and medium density fiberboard were satisfied with KS-standard. 7. Tensile strengths, parallel to grain and perpendicular to grain of plywood were satisfied with allowance stress of US product standard PS 1-74. 8. Screw holding strength of particleboard was not reached to KS standard, but internal bond was satisfied with KS standard.

  • Nondestructive testing(NDT) by using ultrasonic sound is widely applied to wood for grading, moisture and defect detecting, estimating degree of decay, etc. Before practicing such application, basic relationships between ultrasonic transmission and wood properties shall be studied first. In this study, ultrasonic NDT was applied to larch and red pine to investigate the effects of moisture content and slope of grain on ultrasonic transmission speed. Specimens for testing about moisture content were prepared to have moisture content of green state, 30%, 20%, 10% and oven-dry state. Specimens for testing about slope of grain were prepared to have grain angle of 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 degree in the tangential direction. Ultrasonic transmission speed was inversely proportional to moisture content in low range of moisture content under around 30% that was considered to be close to fiber saturation point. In high moisture content range above 30%, the ultrasonic transmission speed was almost constant. The same trend was observed in the relationships between compressive strength and moisture content. Slope of grain also had inversely proportional relationship with ultrasonic transmission speed and compressive strength. The relationship between compressive strength and ultrasonic transmission speed could be expressed by a linear equation.

  • This study was carried out to manufacture wooden vessels by small diameter wood and wasted wood of Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc, which has been largely planted in southern area. We made spice set, tea box set, cookie vessel set, bowl set and accessory set. With the development of edged tools, the human species has been able to fashion wood to change and enhance its environment - one only has to look at the history of all cultures to see examples of wooden artifacts and structures. Even with the development of synthetic materials and the progress of automated, mechanized production of wood and wood products, the raw material is still processed by traditional methods to meet a never-ending demand for products made from this most desirable natural material. Chestnut wood has high added value and natural color grain and is very useful for wooden vessel. Thinned low grade trees can be used to produce wooden vessel. Therefore this result can promote thinning and produce good forestation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate some mechanical properties for wood rational utilization of heartwood and sapwood in radiata pine according to basic density, ring width and proportion of latewood which were grown in New Zealand. This result were summarized as follow: Heartwood showed 35.78(MPa) of the compression strength parallel to the grain while sapwood showed 42.08(MPa). The modulus of rupture in static bending was higher in sapwood showing 86.12(MPa) than in heartwood 72.99(MPa) Heartwood had 7.38(GPa) for the modulus of elasticity in static bending and sapwood 8.17(GPa). As the basic density and proportion of latewood increased: compression strength parallel to the grain, MOR and MOE in static bending had a tendency to increase. As ring width increased, the mechanical properties decreased.

  • Aggravation of natural environment, improvements in income, internet diffusion, spread of five-day work a week, and population aging seem very different from each other. However they boil down to consumption. These culture patterns are changing into environment-friendly and productive housing culture. In other words, people might tend to have frequent contacts with not only environment-friendly housing in bustling cities but also woods that is environment friendly materials in their leisure time. In the period of people young and old alike are in favor of woodcrafts, this study was conducted for giving information to who speicalized in woodcrafts. Furthermore, the study shows that other countries also added grain and figure to woodcrafts for visually appealing.

  • When users use medical volume rendering applications, selecting specific region of volume data and observing the region by magnification is a common process. As the wood-grain artifact is arise from the magnified image, the jittered sampling technique has been used to remove the problem. However, the jittered sampling leads to some noise along the volume edge. In this research, we reveal the reason of the noise, and present a solution. To remove the wood-grain artifact without the noise, we propose the empty space jittering and the sampling alignment method. Using these methods, we can produce high quality volume rendering images without noticeable time consuming.

  • The specific gravity of wood treated with the essential oil penetration was higher than that of untreated wood. However, in case of oven-dried wood the difference of treated and untreated products decreased, compared with air-dried wood. The shrinkage of treated wood showed no consistent trend and the difference was trivial. In addition, similar trend was shown in each direction. Compression strength parallel to grain of treated wood was somewhat higher than that of untreated wood and the difference was trivial. The difference in static bending strength was slight and showed no consistent trend. The stage of check for Pinus koraiensis and Populus tomentiglandulosa and Alnus hirsuta was 2 stage and 3 stage, respectively. Deformation stage with no relation to the essential oil treatment was 1 stage for Pinus koraiensis, 2 stage Populus tomentiglandulosa and 3 stage for Ainus hirsuta, respectively, and there was no difference in essential oil penetration.

  • Cross laminated timber (CLT) has been an rising issue as a promising building material replacing steel-concrete in mid story rise construction. But, there was no specific standard for CLT because it had been developed in industrial section. Recently, new draft for requirements of CLT was proposed by EN which suggested to evaluate the performance of adhesive in CLT by the same method as glulam. But, it has been reported that shear performance of cross laminated timber is governed by rolling shear. Therefore, block shear tests were carried out to compare parallel to grain laminating and cross laminating using commercial one component PUR (Poly urethane resin). The result showed that the current glulam standard for evaluating bonding performance is not appropriate for CLT. Beacause shear strength of cross laminating decreased to 1/3 of parallel to grain laminating and this strength was representing shear performance of wood itself not the bond. However, cross laminating showed no significant effect on wood failure. Thus, wood failure can be used as a requirement of CLT bonding. Based on the results, cross laminating effect should be included when evaluating adhesive performance of CLT correctly and should be considered as an important factor.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the strength and stiffness of drift pinned and bolted joints with steel-plates by the tension-type lateral strength tests. Specimens were solid wood of Pinus densiflora. Bolt and drift pin were jointed with inserted steel plates. Tests were conducted with combinations of two loading directions (parallel to the grain : 0 degree, perpendicular to the grain : 90 degree) and three diameters of fasteners (d = 6 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm). The results obtained were as follow: 1. In the test of the parallel to the grain, maximum loads were increased with increasing of the diameter of bolt and drift pin in the same end distance. In the test of perpendicular to the grain with diameter 10 mm and 12 mm, specimens mostly were failed with horizontal splits in woods reaching the yield load of drift pinned and bolted joints. 2. The ratio of maximum load to the yield load determined by the so-called "5% offset method", was great in bolted joints in the parallel to the grain This trend become more remarkable as the slenderness ratio was increased. 3. The calculated yield strength was agreed well with the experimental results of drift pinned joint(0 degree).
