In this study we experimented setting time and basic properties as waste wood fiber and sodium silicate substitution rate to reuse waste wood fiber produced in construction field to wood chip board. To do this construction waste woods were crushed with the size less than 10mm, mixed with the rate of 1:2, 2.5, 3, and added sodium silicate with the rate of 0, 5% of cement content. The results are as follows. As the substitution rate of construction waste wood was increased delay of setting time was also increased, and the batch of adding 5% accelerator had a 13~17 hours faster setting time than non accelerator batch. The compressive strength was lower as wood substitution rate was higher, and as the specific gravity was higher, the strength was also higher. As wood substitution rate was higher, heat conductivity was lower, and as specific gravity was higher, heat conductivity also was higher.
Among the domestic softwoods, technical value of Pinus koraiensis small diameter logs which have comparatively low applicability was evaluated and sensitive characteristics and physical characteristics were investigated and analyzed for examining if it can be utilized as the interior decoration material. For the sensitive characteristics of Pinus koraiensis, wood figure, wood grain, wood color and odor were evaluated and for the physical characteristics, growth-ring width and latewood percentage, abrasion, density, shrinkage, swelling, absorption, roughness and hardness were evaluated. Then, the possibility to be developed as the interior decoration material was found. As the result of evaluating sensitive characteristics and physical characteristics of domestic Pinus koraiensis, wood figure, wood grain, color and scent clearly were judged to have excellent visual factor as the interior decoration material. And, physical characteristics were also judged to be excellent, so it is judged to be developed as the interior decoration material. Therefore, as the result of various forms of design pattern with domestic Pinus koraiensis small diameter logs, several patterns of interior decoration can be developed by characteristics of each side and colors of heartwood and sapwood. And, in the future, it can be applied to furniture design or interior decoration material for the proper use. Especially, it is considered to contribute to wood applying industry through the study on the quality of domestic small diameter logs which have low applicability.
This study was conducted to compare and analyze gross calorific values from measurement methods of lignocellulosic biomass and calculation data from calorific value prediction models based on the elemental content. The deviation of Liriodendron tulipifera (LT) and Populus euramericana (PE) was shown 7.7 cal/g and 7.4 cal/g respectively in palletization method, which are within repeatability limit 28.8 cal/g of ISO FDIS 18125. In the case of Thailand charcoal (TC), nontreatment method and palletization method was satisfied with repeatability limit as 22.8 cal/g and 8.8 cal/g respectively. Seowon charcoal (SC) was shown deviation of 11.4 cal/g in nontreatment method, because the density and chemical affinity of sample increases as the carbon content increases from heat treatment at high temperature in the case of TC and SC. In addition, after applying the elemental content of each of these samples to the calorific value prediction models, the study found that Model Equation (3) was relatively consistent with measured calorific values of all these lignocellulosic biomass. Thus, study about the correlation between the density and size of particle should be conducted in order to select the measurement method for a wide range of solid biofuels in the future.
Wood-plastic composites represents a growing class of materials used by the residential construction industry and furniture industry. In this study, the effect of flame retardants on the flammability and mechanical properties of wood flour-high density polyethylene(HDPE) composites were studied. we were manufactured wood flour-HDPE composites by modular intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder with L/D ratio of 42. The flame retardant properties were used limiting oxygen index(LOI) and mechanical properties were measured by universal testing machine(UTM). The Morphological analysis of composites were analyzed by Scanning electron microscope(SEM). It was found that Ammonium polyphosphate can effectively reduce the flammability of the wood flour-HDPE composites. Marginal reduction in the mechanical properties of the composites was found with addition of flame retardants. SEM images showed that the coupling agent improved wood flour-HDPE interfacial bonding.

Porous SiC samples were prepared with three types of wood (poplar, pine, big cone pine) by simply embedding the wood charcoal in a powder mixture of Si and $SiO_2$ at 1600 and $1700^{\circ}C$. The basic engineering properties such as density, porosity, pore size and distribution, and strength were characterized. The samples showed full conversion to mostly $\beta$-SiC with good retention of the cellular structure of the original wood. More rigid SiC struts were developed for $1700^{\circ}C$. They showed similar bulk density ($0.5{\sim}0.6\;g/cm^3$) and porosity (81~84%) irrespective of the type of wood. The poplar sample showed three pore sizes (1, 8, $60\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $60\;{\mu}m$. The pine sample showed a single pore size ($20\;{\mu}m$). The big cone pine sample showed two pore sizes (10, $80\;{\mu}m$) with a main size of $10\;{\mu}m$. The bend strength was 2.5 MPa for poplar, 5.7 MPa for pine, 2.8 MPa for big cone pine, indicating higher strength with pine.

The influence of liquefied wood (LW) on the mechanical and thermal properties of liquefied wood-polymer composites (LWPC) was investigated in this study. The thermal behaviors of LWPC were characterized by means of thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. LW showed significant effects on the mechanical strength properties. The increase of flexural MOE and Young's modulus was related to the increase of stiffness of LWPC. The effect of LW was also significant on the flexural and tensile MOR. The impact strength decreased with the increase of LW application level. With the increased stress concentration by the poor bonding between LW and polymer, the impact strength of LWPC decreased, compared with that of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The thermal stability of LWPC decreased with the increase of LW content up to 40%. The melting temperature of HDPE decreased with the increase of LW loading level. Enthalpy of HDPE also decreased with the addition of LW. This study proves the thermal stability necessary for the consolidation of composition materials.
In this study, LVLs of radiata pine were fabricated with non-preservative treated veneers, CuAz treated veneers, and ACQ treated veneers, using aqueous vinyl urethane adhesive and phenol modified resorcinol resin adhesive. Then density gradient, bonding strength, bending properties and decay resistance of LVLs were evaluated. As results, the cone-shaped and higher density gradient pattern was found in layer close to glueline. After cyclic water boiled test, the LVL bonded with aqueous vinyl urethane resin adhesive was delaminated in all layers or partly delaminated including check, chasm in glueline layer. In the case of LVL bonded with phenol modified resorcinol resin adhesive, despite slight cupping due to great glueline stress and vertical check between glueline layers, it was observed that the bonding strength to delamination was higher, owing to most absence of delamination through overall glueline. On the other hand, in the decay test, mass loss by brown rot fungi was greater than white rot fungi in LVL bonded with aqueous vinyl urethane resin adhesive. However, in LVL bonded with phenol modified resorcinol resin adhesive, the mass loss by brown rot fungi was slight and non-preservative treated LVL was low. The mass loss of preservative-treated LVL was 0 (zero), showing the high decay resistance effect.
The productivity and demand of porous material has been increasing by development of industry and increasing income. In particular, the fire caused by using wood flour risks wood processing industry and stock farm. The heat transfer of wood flour is carried into the depth direction by effect of oxidizer around flame, flame sometimes is progressed as smoldering. In the case of progressing as combustion fire, identifying the location of fire is difficult, and it leads to failing fire aid fire fighting. Therefore potential cause is acted as raising additional damage. This paper conducts experiments of downward deep seated fire of natural convection conditions. The samples is New Zealand wood flour that is demanded much in the domestic and oversea market. In this experiment, temperature of deep seated side is measure by changing wood flour density in holder The densities used in experiment are 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%. As a result, the tendency of temperature inside decreases as wood flour density increases. But, in the case of density which is above $0.2140g/cm^3$, the phenomenon, decreasing temperature, is not shown. The result of measurement show that average flame spread speed of wood flour is 0.249 mm/min.
European spruce and maple were to be estimated as raw material of violin family instruments with linear modal analysis to provide the information data for the design of their bodies. Wood specimens cut in different direction were excited by impact hammer to measure the resonant frequency with typical vibrational modes. In spite of lower density than maple, European spruce showed the excellent acoustical properties with higher resonant frequency. And edge-grained spruce had more even frequencies than flat-grained ones to be more acceptable as front plate of violin. Resonant frequency was positively correlated with wood density of each specimen and the coefficients of edge-grained specimens were higher than those of flat-grained specimens of both wood species.
This study was conducted to identify the potential of Quercus mongolica (QUM), Pinus densiflora (PID) and Pinus rigida (PIR) as a raw material for pellet production. Larix kaempferi (LAK), which has mostly been used for pellet production in Korea, was also used as a control. All specimens contained very minimal amounts of sulfur and chlorine. Ash content of LAK was the lowest, followed by PID, PIR and QUM. For the size distribution, the mass fraction between 0.42 mm and 0.25 mm was the highest in PIR. Most fuel characteristics of the produced wood pellets improved with the use of 12% moisture content (MC) particles and the increase of the ratio of length to diameter of a hole in flat-die (L/D ratio). When the MC, bulk density and durability of QUM, PID, PIR and LAK pellets was compared with the standards of the KFRI and ISO, the use of wood particles of 12% MC and flat-die with an L/D ratio of 5.00 for PID particles are suitable for high-quality pellets in the aspects of all fuel characteristics. For PIR and QUM, further work is needed to seek the optimum conditions for the production of high-quality and durable pellets.
