  • This paper reports on the changes of equilibrium moisture contents and specific surface areas of Poplar wood(Populus euramericana) for various steam explosion treatments. Equilibrium moisture contents(EMC) and specific surfaces of steam exploded woods were measured under the moisture adsorption course at 25$^{\circ}C$, and compared with those of other materials and wood meals. The EMCs of steam exploded wood meal were 1~5% less in comparison with that of wood meal. In the case of delignified steam exploded wood meal and delignified wood meal, the same tendency was appeared too. But absolute values of EMCs for delignified wood meals were larger than those of the wood meal. For the changes of EMC by the steam exploded conditions, the EMC decreased with the increase of the steam explosion pressure. On the other hand, specific surface areas were calculated from BET plots based on amounts of monomolecular vapor adsorption of various wood meals. Specific surface areas of the wood meal and delignified wood meal were 90~145, 34~90($m^2/g$) respectively, and which were greater in comparison with those of steam exploded wood meals and delignified steam exploded wood meals. From these results, it is considered that the amount of water vapor adsorption was decreased by the increase of the crystallinity, effect of heat treatment, and coating by melted lignin in during the steam explosion.

  • The goal of study was to investigate the influence of the acrylated urethane oligomer on mechanical properties, the chemical resistance and thermal resistance of the UV curable urethane acrylate coatings for fancy veneer overlayed plywood flooring. The pencil hardness and abrasion resistance of the coated fancy veneer overlayed plywood floorings increased with increasing the acrylate functionality of the acrylated urethane oligomer. In the case of the UV cured film containing hexa-functional acrylated aliphatic urethane oligomer, high discoloration of the coated fancy veneer overlayed plywood flooring was observed near the cracks at the beginning of the chemical treatment. In this study, it was found that the degradation of the UV cured film caused by an alkaline reagent was higher than that of the UV cured film caused by an acidic treatment.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the air contents and the chloride penetration in offshore concrete depending on the types of forms. Three types of concretes(plain, MSF, and FA concretes) with four kinds of forms(wood, coating wood, steel, and polypropylene film) were investigated. The test results show that the air contents in the concrete cured with steel and polypropylene forms were higher than those with wood and coating wood forms. The concrete with wood forms has the least air content. The variation of chloride ingress time was large depending on the types of forms on the same concrete, i.e. 13.2, 20.3, and 17.7% for Plain, MSF, and FA concretes, respectively. Consequently, the surface conditions of forms should be considered for design of durable concrete.

  • This study was performed to identify the effect of end-coating around pith of heavy timbers of Red pine and Korean pine on high temperature and low humidity drying characteristics. Total drying times were 268 hours, and ranges of final moisture content was investigated that Red Pine 9.2% to 10.8% MC for square and round timber, in case of Korean Pine 15.0% to 22.0% MC for square timber, 12.8% to 20.4% MC for round timber. Moisture content distribution of Red Pine was a uniform, but part of high moisture content was found in Korean Pine. In case of Korean pine, the surface checks were occurred more severe than in case of Red pine, and end-coating treatment were investigated to be ineffective on surface check. The internal checks were only formed on the two timbers. The value of the case hardenings was investigated that the ranges 3.7% to 9.1% for Red pine. In case of Korean pine, on the other hand, the case hardenings presence a few as 20.9% to 35.8%.

  • In previous study, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emission characteristics were highly affected by coating materials for wood finishing. Natural based coating materials showed that about 15~46% lower TVOC emission than typical products. In this study, long-term changes of VOCs emission characteristics from pine panel with three types of coating treatments were determined. Non-treated pine panel emitted $604.7{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$ of TVOC that contained 66% of NVOC ($399.7{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$) at 0 month. After 10 month, TVOC reduced 88% and 93% reduction on NVOC was observed. Natural oil and waterborne stain treated pine panel showed 61% and 77% lower TVOC, respectively, than non-treated pine panel. However, TVOC from finished pine panels showed higher TVOC emission than non-treated pine panel. All samples satisfied the VOC emission regulation (below $4,000{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$) by Korean Ministry of Environment. Toluene emission regulation (below $80{\mu}g/m^2{\cdot}h$) was passed on all sample without varnish treated pine panel at 0 month. According to HB qualification standard for construction materials by Korea Air Cleaning Association (KACA), wood is not qualified to get the best tag due to high TVOC emission. At the 10 months, only non-treated pine panel could get the best tag of HB from KACA.

  • In this study, two materials treated with a flame retardant were examined for their fire resistance. The first, MDF (medium density fiberboard) was overlaid by an oak sliced veneer, which was either treated by soaking in a 6wt.% solution of flame retardant chemicals (pentabromine-chlorinated paraffin) or non-treated and then was coated with either a flame retardant polyurethane coating or with a common polyurethane coating. The second material, Pinus koraiensis penal was either treated by a spray treatment using a flame retardant solution or non-treated and then was coated with either a flame retardant polyurethane coating or with a common polyurethane coating. Pentabromine-chorinated paraffin chemicals were added (6 part of urethane resin) as the flame retardant chemicals in the polyurethane coatings. In the fire resistance test, the th𝜃(℃·min) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and the flame retardant coatings, compared to the untreated sample Weight loss (%) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and the flame retardant coatings. The ignition time (sec.) increased and the residual flame time (sec.) decreased with the flame retardant treatment or/and flame retardant coatings. Therefore, the flame retardant treatment or/and flame retardant polyurethane coatings have excellent incombustibility.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of End-coating (CO) treatment and Vapor-dam (V) treatment on the air circulating oven drying characteristics of green stock (Paulownia tomentosa) for drum. The reduction of the weight of specimens was greatly displayed in order of control (C-NC) treatment, End-coating (C-CO) treatment, Vapor-dam (V-NC) treatment and Vapor-dam/End-coating (V-CO) treatment after the beginning of drying. The V-CO treated specimen showed smoother temperature gradient compared with the V-NC treated specimen throughout whole drying stage and there was little temperature gradient between the inner and outer part of the cylindrical stock. The C-CO treated specimen showed higher value of vapor pressure in both the inner and outer part of the cylindrical stock until the middle stage of drying, while after the middle stage of drying only the inner part of the cylindrical stock presented higher value compared with the C-NC treated specimen. The distribution of the absolute vapor pressure of the V-CO treated specimen was similar to that of the V-NC treated specimen during the initial stage of drying. However, the former showed a large distribution in order of the hollow, the outer part, the inner part of the cylindrical stock after the initial stage of drying, which was entirely different model of distribution from that of the V-NC treated specimen. Surface checks and ring failures were not observed for all of the specimens, while end checks were severely occurred for the C-NC treated specimen and the V-NC treated specimen.

  • This paper was intended to evaluate the effect of the blending condition of pigments on the packing structure of coating color and the interaction between pigments and latices on the optical and interior properties of coated paper. It has been studied many ways to modify the coating structure to induce the interaction among coating components as followings ; 1) to use dispersant for pigment, 2) to control the charge density and the type of surface charge of latex, 3) to support the water retention by adding water retention agent or flow modifier. This paper was performed through the introduction of interaction between pigments which were two kinds of clays and one precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC) and ionic latices of which anionic and amphoteric respectively under the certain blending condition of pigments where their blending ratio of clays to calcium carbonate was 70pph to 30pph. The reason is that packing volume of pigments was highest in that region and thixotropical behavior appears in measuring rheology of coating color. We measured the properties of coating color, interaction with pigments and latex, and properties of coated paper and its printability. As a results, we could find out that amphoteric latex had a great influence on the interaction with pigments, especially clays, no matter what grade and also affected the coating structure significantly in case that this blending condition was 70(clays) to 30(PCC). It produced a powerful effect on the forming of bulky and smooth coating structure and in turn improved the printability of coated paper.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the pore and penetration of chloride in seashore concrete depending on types of curing forms. Three types of concretes (Plain concrete, MSF concrete and FA concrete) with four different form types (wood, coating wood, steel and polypropylene film) were examined. The test results show that the air volume in concrete was relatively higher with steel and polypropylene forms than others, and wood form shows the least air volume. The penetration of chloride depending on type of form is showed a wide variability, that is, the values on plain concrete, MSF concrete and FA concrete are 115.2, 125.5 and 121.6 %, respectively. Based on the present study, concrete should be considered the conditions of curing form-type for durable concrete.
