Association of Work-related Characteristics and Hypertension among White Collar Workers (사무종사자의 직업 특성과 고혈압의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the association between work related characteristics and hypertension among white collar workers in Korea. Materials and methods: This study was based on the Third Korean Working Conditions Survey(KWCS) conducted in 2011 among workers 15 years of age or older. The total number of individuals included in the analysis was 10,365 white collar workers. Results: The prevalence rate of hypertension was 3.7% among men and 1.0% among women. In multiple logistic analysis the adjusted odds ratio showed statistically effective association to hypertension. For work related characteristics, 1.73 (95% confidence interval, 1.22-2.46) resulted for large-company workers compared with the small-company group, 2.14 (95% CI, 1.22-3.75) for the long working hours group (61 or above) compared with short working hours group(52 or below), 1.78(95% CI, 1.08-2.95) for night shift workers compared with day workers, and 1.54 (95% CI, 1.18-2.01) for high job stress workers compared with low job stress workers. Conclusions: This study showed that it is important for workers to manage their work environment in order to prevent hypertension by modifying their types of work.

Lifestyle Characteristics, Metabolic Syndrome Risk Factors and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease among Workers in Kyeongki-do (경기도 지역 대사증후군 근로자의 생활습관특성, 대사증후군 위험요인 및 심혈관 위험도)

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the lifestyle characteristics and risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) among workers with metabolic syndrome(MS). Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional survey design was used. A total of 187 workers with MS were recruited from a university hospital. The anthropometric measures were used and blood data were reviewed from the health record. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regressions with SPSS/WIN 12.0. Results: While 52.2% of women did not do exercise regularly, 30.5% of men did not at all. The prevalence of MS according to each component was as follows: hypertension was 92.0%, obesity was 89.8%, hyperlipidemia was 63.1%, and hyperglycemia was 61.0%. The high prevalence of each component of MS in workers with MS indicated a significantly higher risk of CVD. The odds ratio of risk of CVD was 16.04 (p=.017) in workers with hypertension, when compared to workers without hypertension. Similarly, the odds ratio of risk of CVD was 11.04 (p=.000) in workers with hyperglycemia, compared to workers without hyperglycemia. Conclusion: Increased risk of CVD was significantly associated with lifestyle characteristics and MS risk factors among Korean workers with MS.

  • The purpose of this study is to review in light at women's subjective. Perceptions of manifestations Premenstrual Syndrome which are known to affect their labor productivity. To this end, 364 women workers were sampled from an industrial factory located in Chonan, Chungchongnam-do and supervised by health manager, through questionnaires, and collected data were processed using SPSS package program. The result of survey can be summarized as follows: The fact that some academic circles are recently raising the issue of premenstrual syndrome. Suggests that the syndrome is being accepted in academic terms, which is contary to the position that the syndrome is just the result of women's mental imagination. However, some factors which are concived to affect woman worker' productivity and efficiency seem to be related to their subjective psychological variables involving their working environment rather than their physiological variabls. Therefore, if a health-promotion program handling their subjective psychological variables be introduced, some factors caused by the pre-menstrual syndroml may be reduced thus increasing their working productivity and. efficiency around their menstrual days.

Time Use of Married Female Production Workers (생산직 기혼여성의 생활시간 분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the real life of married women employed in a manufacturing industry by analysis patterns of their time use. Data for 172 married working women were gathered from the use of face-to-face interview method. The results were shown as follows; 1) Married female production workers spend 8 hours 44 minutes a weekday, and 10 hours 39 minutes a Sunday on physiological activities, and on socio-cultural activities 1 hour 50 minutes(weekday), 5 hours 30 minutes (sunday). 10 hours 22 minutes, 2 hours 23 minutes were consumed for the employed time compared to 3 hours 4 minutes, 5 hours 28 minutes for household labor. 2) Married working women's employed labor time is excessively too long while for leisure and house work time is too short, which means the patterns of their time use are very unbalanced type.

A study on job mismatches by women's education level (여성의 교육수준에 따른 직무불일치에 대한 연구)

  • This study examined the degree of job mismatches and how job mismatches affects wages and job satisfaction of women wage workers who graduated from college. The four-year data from the 20th to 23rd (2017-2020) of the Korean Labor & Income Panel Study (KLIPS) were integrated and used for analysis. As a result of the study, first, it was found that female workers graduating from universities in Korea are experiencing serious job mismatches such as education, skill, and major mismatches. The degree was more pronounced as the level of education increased. Second, it was found that it had a negative (-) effect on wages according to the degree of job mismatch, such as education, skill, and major mismatch. Third, it was confirmed that job satisfaction decreased according to the degree of job mismatch such as education, skill, and major mismatch.

The Effects of industrial workers' food choice attribute on sugar intake pattern and job satisfaction with Structural Equcation Model

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This research analyzes the effects of the food choices of industrial workers according to their sugar intake pattern on their job satisfaction through the construction of a model on the relationship between sugar intake pattern and job satisfaction. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Surveys were collected from May to July 2015. A statistical analysis of the 775 surveys from Kyungsangnam-do was conducted using SPSS13.0 for Windows and SEM was performed using the AMOS 5.0 statistics package. RESULTS: The reliability of the data was confirmed by an exploratory factor analysis through a Cronbach's alpha coefficient, and the measurement model was proven to be appropriate by a confirmatory factor analysis in conjunction with AMOS. The results of factor analysis on food choice, sugar intake pattern and job satisfaction were categorized into five categories. The reliability of these findings was supported by a Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.6 and higher for all factors except confection (0.516) and dairy products (0.570). The multicollinearity results did not indicate a problem between the variables since the highest correlation coefficient was 0.494 (P < 0.01). In an attempt to study the sugar intake pattern in accordance with the food choices and job satisfaction of industrial workers, a structural equation model was constructed and analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: All tests confirmed that the model satisfied the recommended levels for the goodness of fit index, and thus, the overall research model was proven to be appropriate.

Effects of Emotional Labor, Somatic Symptoms, and Emotional Support on Quality of Life among Middle-aged Female Workers (중년여성 근로자의 감정노동, 신체화 증상, 정서적 지지가 삶의 질에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of emotional labor, somatic symptoms, and emotional support on quality of life among middle-aged women workers. Methods: The study design was a descriptive survey research. Data were collected from October 2013 to January 2014 in Korea. A self-reported questionnaire was administerd in a convenience sample of 264 middle aged women in various working places. The survey included socio-demographic and job-related factors, and the questionnaires about emotional labor, somatic symptoms, emotional support, and quality of life. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: Stepwise multiple regression showed that somatic symptoms had the greatest effect on quality of life (${\beta}=-1.65$, p<.001), followed by emotional support (${\beta}=0.67$, p<.001), and job satisfaction (${\beta}=3.98$, p<.001). And these variables accounted for 52% of quality of life among middle-aged women workers (F=97.14, p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest for clinical nurses to take somatic symptoms, emotional support, and job satisfaction into special account in order to improve the middle aged women worker's quality of life. Ultimately, a health promotion program focusing on these influential variables in workplace need to be developed for the given population.

Part-time Work in the UK: From Married Women's Work to Universal Flexible Work? (영국의 시간제 근로: 기혼 여성의 일에서 보편적 유연근로로의 변화?)

  • This article examines part-time work in the UK in terms of its characteristics and institutional contexts. Part-time jobs developed early due to the UK's liberal market institution and low level of public support for female employment. A large proportion of the employed women (about 40 percent) work part-time. Part-time work has been largely for married women. The expansion of part-time work in the UK was primarily market-driven and led by employers. Married women have worked part-time work primarily to accommodate their family responsibilities. There have been significant changes in labor market regulation in the UK since 1997. The Labor government legislated the Part-time Workers Regluations in 2000 to protect part-time workers. The government has also changed and newly implemented various laws and policies for work-life balance. There has been a real progress in improving the quality of part-time work overall. Nevertheless, we have not seen qualitatively different results in terms of female employment patterns and the qualify of part-time work so far. It has been largely constrained by the government's liberal orienation and voluntarism of labor relations in the UK.

About Family Planning Status in Today (오늘의 피임실태(避妊實態)에 관(關)하여)

  • Natural increase rate in population is reached to 1.7% in 1975 fron 2.5% in 1966 because of the effect of Govermental Family Planning Program. The average number of present children and ideal children is just the same, 2.4 people, in this investigation. So, I assume that the number of present and ideal children is approaching each other. The rate of unmarried female workers who don't know even one thing about the know ledge of contraception was 23.9%, and especially that of rural women was 31.5% and 41.3% of them has never experienced contraception. 'Boy-preference' presented 60.1% of unmarried female workers and 79.1% of married women. 'Connection of a family line' related to 'Transfer to next generation of a family line' presented 38.0% and 'Trustworthiness' related to 'Leadership of a family' presented 26.0% (total 64.0%). As this point, Ive can find that this rate reveals the traditional sense of patriarchal system in society and family. The rate of women of experienced artificial abortion has been 52.1% and that of women using it as birth control caused by 'Many children' and 'Short brith-interval' 46.6% of women of experienced pregnancy. So, we can see that artificial abortion is a main cause of Maternal Health destruction.

The Prevalence of Gout and Its Risk Factors in Healthy Workers

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and risk of gout in healthy workers. Methods: This cross-sectional analysis was conducted in 1,876 subjects (1,515 men and 361 women) enrolled in the Healthy Worker Cohort Study at Daegu, South Korea. Relationships between serum uric acid levels and independent risk factors were evaluated using multiple linear regression analysis after adjustment for covariates. Results: Among study participants, the prevalence of gout was 22.9% in men and 2.5% in women (based on a serum uric acid level >7.0 mg/dL for men and >6.0 mg/dL for women). Among men, increased ALT, GGT, total cholesterol, and triglycerides were associated with increased risk of gout (p<0.05) by multiple linear regression analysis; however, increased age and HDL-cholesterol/triglyceride ratio were associated with decreased risk of gout (p<0.05). In women, increased triglycerides were associated with increased risk of gout (p<0.05). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that increased triglycerides were significantly associated with the risk of gout in men and women. Moreover, a high HDL-cholesterol/triglyceride ratio in men may reduce the risk of gout.
