Purpose: This study compared health behaviors between single-member and multiple-member households by gender in adults. Method: Study subjects were 21,757 adults 20-65-years-of-age from the Third Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2005. The relationship between health behaviors and residence characteristics was assessed using multiple logistic regression analysis while controlling for sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Younger women living alone were more likely to drink than older women living with others. Women who were in multiple-member households and had a low income were less likely to exercise regularly, to sleep well, and to have regular health examinations. Age, educational level, and income were significantly associated with smoking, exercise, and health examination rather than residence characteristics in men. Conclusion: Residence characteristics should be considered in developing a public health program to reduce or increase modifiable health behaviors as well as age, gender, education, and income.
This paper serves to analyze the points of views un women in enlightenment discourse of the equality of sexes during the enlightenment period of Korea (1860 1910). The discourses of newspapers that are the text of this study have been analyzed with qualitative research technique. The major conclusions that are derived from the study are as follows. First, enlightenment discourse of the equality of sexes criticized women’s inferior status in family and in society. Second, the discourse, however, claimed the women's rights with the view of national interests, which meant that the ultimate goal of the discourse was not the enhancement of women's rights. Women during the enlightenment period were recognized as a member of a nation while they should also role as a member of If. The discourse also claimed that the equality of sexes could be realized through education and emphasized especially women's role as a mother who should raise a member of a nation. Third, enlightenment discourse would not understand the women's every day lives that resulted in demanding women more roles in the name of civilization.
The purpose of this study is to analyze whether there is gender difference in Members' voting on women's issue bills, and to find out determinants of Members voting decisions on the same bills. The findings are as follows. First, there is no gender difference in women's issue voting, so women Members as a group were not significantly different from men Members in voting behavior. That's not because women Members were split in voting but because both men and women Members are very supportive of the bills. Secondly, Members' party and ideology play a significant role in Member' voting on women's issue. Compared to the majority party(Uri party)'s overwhelming support, minority parties are much less supportive on the issues. Member's ideology also proved to be important indicator of voting decision. The more ideologically liberal Members are, the more supportive of the bills.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore women caregivers' lived experiences in caring at home for a family member with dementia and to identify conditions that oppress women in the context of family caregiving. Method: This study was conducted within the feminist perspectives using qualitative secondary data. Ten secondary data conveying self reflective contents were selected from the 25 original data obtained in 1999 to 2000. Result: Six themes that emerged from the qualitative thematic content analysis were; androcentric view of family caregiving, undervalued family caregiving by the family members, Self rationalization in the context of family caregiving, family-centric care mechanism, exemplary caring within the family context, and inter-familial relationships among women. Conclusion: The main focus of feminist research is to provide empowerment for the women, research participants and to bring about social change of oppressive constraint through some actions. On the basis of the research findings, therefore, action strategies from feminist perspectives were suggested in some aspects of health care delivery sectors, nursing education and research sectors, and administrative sectors.

The purpose of this study are to propose religious activity that could allow for a satisfactory relationship between all family members of a protestant married women, and to contribute to make a harmonious family through recommended activities for a protestant family and church to accept and carry out. The analyses of the results are in case of the pure explanation power that religious activity has on a protestant married women and her family member’s relational satisfaction, the couple relational satisfaction degree from wife is 4.6%, the one from husband is 4.4%, the mother-child relational satisfaction degree from mother is 2.5%, and the one from child is 1.5%. This study aims at exploring the transnational care for family members back home among the Nepalese marriage immigrant women in Korea on the bases of some transnational care practices like remittances, virtual intimacy through information and communication technologies, visit to Nepal, and invitation of family members to Korea. This study argues that in order to understand migrant women's care practices properly, Nepalese marriage immigrant women should be considered as 'being in-between' the societies and cultures of Nepal and Korea. This study identifies the characteristics of transnational care practices of Nepalese women are closely related to the role expectation for the eldest daughter as well as whether or not migrant women have children, jobs, and original family member in Korea. Furthermore, this study highlights that migrant women's transnational care practices should be considered as 'reciprocal exchange of cares' between marriage women and their family members rather than one-way benefits going to the latter.
Objectives: We investigated whether the rate of depressive symptom is higher among family members of asthmatic patient compared to people who had no asthmatic family member. Methods: This study used data from the fourth and fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2012). In this cross-sectional study, 15,987 men (mean age 46.4) and 20,906 women (mean age 47.4) were included. To compare the rate of depressive symptoms in individuals who had a family member with asthma and those who did not have, we analyzed data using survey logistic regression. Results: Diagnosed depression was reported by 3.0% of the study population, by 4.2% of asthmatic patient's family member, and by 3.0% of individuals who did not have a family member with asthma. Family members of asthmatic patient increased odds of diagnosed depression compared with those who did not had an asthmatic family member (odds ratio = 1.56, p = 0.008). Conclusions: To prevent depression among family members of asthmatic patient, health education for entire family of asthmatic patient need to be considered. Also, government and policy makers should give more attention to caregivers who had a family member with asthma.
Purpose: This qualitative study aimed to understand the experiences of reorganization of everyday lives among the women with chronic health problem. Methods: In this study, the approach and its process of sociology of everyday lives were adopted. Data for the study came from 6 informants and 9 family members of the informants by interview and participant-observation from January, 2004 to May, 2006. Qualitative content analyzing methods were adopted. Results: Informants' everyday lives were reorganized as follows. During the experiences of shock from unpleasant and unclear symptoms of their body, their sight fixed on the body part. Their time also fixed on a point of present. They started to wander from medical care to folk and lay care. After they were informed that the health problem could not be treated completely, they reduced the world of everyday life and protected themselves from the chaotic unfamiliar world by setting -a- side duties as a family member and severing unessential social relationship. As they achieved a skill for managing their health problem, they gained their former pattern of everyday lives as a woman, a family member, and a social member. Finally, they created a new life world. Conclusion: We need more study on the development of an adaptive strategy by the informants, to intervene in the crisis of everyday life.
PPARs (peroxisome proliferator activated receptors) are member of nuclear hormone receptors superfamily. Activations of PPARs upon binding with ligands modulate glucose metabolite, differentiation of adipocyte, inflammation response, and so on. Thiazolidinedione analog is one of the potential antidiabetic drug that binds and activates PPAR selectively and enhances insulin sensitivity. In an effort to develop novel and effective antidiabetic thiazolidindione analogs, we have synthesized tetrahydroquinoline and para-substituted benzene-linked thiazolidinedione analogs by coupling reaction of the hydrophobic segments with hydroxybenzylthiazolidinedione.
