  • Outgassing from such sources as paints, coatings, adhesives and other non-metallic surfaces can contaminate satellites, especially second surface mirror and optical lens, it cause satellite to fail in own missions. The vacuum bake-out test using high temperature(more than $85 ^{\circ}C$)and high vacuum(less than $5.0{\times}1-^{-3}$ Pa) certify that the components of satellite work properly and can survive and operate in space environment like high vacuum. In the bake-out chamber installed at SITC of KARI, Rotary vacuum pump and Booster pump produce low vacuum of 5.0 Pa, and then two cryopumps produce high vacuum of below $5.0{\times}10^{-3}$ Pa. Also 48 ceramic heaters were provided to simulate high temperature. During the vacuum bake-out test, we detected contaminants using RGA(Residual Gas Analyzer) and measure the outgassing rate of the contaminant using the TQCM(Thermoelectric Quartz Crystal Microbalance). Also, IR/UV Spectrometer and witness plate be used to certify that the components were suitable for the spacecraft. This paper includes the preparation and procedures of the bake-out test for SAR(Solar Array Regulator) and MLI(Multi Layer Insulator), which were the components of the spacecraft. Especially, we discussed the methods and results of the contamination measurement. In the bake-out for SAR, the contamination was measured continuously although it was on the decrease from TQCM results. And RCA established that it is a highly polymerized compound. In the MLI bake-out using RGA and witness plate, we didn't detect any contamination materials.

  • In this study, high velocity impact tests along with modeling of material behavior and numerical analyses were conducted to predict the dispersion behavior of the debris resulting from a high velocity impact fracture. For the impact tests, two different materials were employed for both the projectile and the target plate - the first setup employed aluminum alloy while the second employed steel. The projectile impacts the target plate with a velocity of approximately 1 km/s were enforced to generate the impact damages in the aluminum witness plate through the fracture debris. It was confirmed that, depending on the material employed, the debris dispersion behavior as well as the dispersion radii on the witness plate varied. A numerical analysis was conducted for the same impact test conditions. The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH)-finite element (FE) coupled technique was then applied to model the fracture and damage upon the debris. The experimental and numerical results for the diameters of the perforation holes in the target plate and the debris dispersion radii on the witness plate were in agreement within a 5% error. In addition, the impact test using steel was found to be more threatening as proven by the larger debris dispersion radius.

  • We investigated event-related potentials (ERPs) to estimate the accuracy of eyewitness memories. Participants watched videos of vehicles being driven dangerously, from an anti-impaired driving initiative. The four-letter license plates of the vehicles were the target stimuli. Random numbers were presented while participants attempted to identify the license plate letters, and electroencephalograms were recorded. There was a significant difference in activity 300-500 milliseconds after stimulus onset, between target stimuli and random numbers. This finding contributes to establishing an eyewitness recognition model where different ERP components may reflect more explicit memory that is dissociable from recollection.

  • It is necessary to be careful about contamination control to minimize the accumulation of the contamination material on satellite surface during the I&T phase. In the space environment which characterized by high vacuum, high and very low temperature, contamination material causes satellite to lose its own performance. Especially, contamination material can accumulate on critical surfaces such as lenses, mirrors, and sensors. KARI(Korea Aerospace Research Institute) conducts the clean room to control and minimize the contamination effect. This paper introduces the principle of contamination and the method of measure and analysis for the contamination.

  • In this study, we investigate the dispersion behavior of debris and debris cloud generated by high-velocity impacts using the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. The projectile and target plate were made of aluminum, and we confirm the validity of the SPH technique by comparing the measured major and minor axis lengths of the debris cloud in the reference with the predicted values obtained through the SPH analysis. We perform high-velocity impact and fracture analysis based on the verified SPH technique within the velocity ranges of 1.5~4 km/s, and we evaluate the dispersion behavior of debris induced by the impact in terms of its kinetic energy. The maximum dispersion radius of the debris on the witness plates located behind the target plate was increased with increasing impact velocity. We derive an empirical equation that is capable of predicting the dispersion radius, and we found that 95% of the total kinetic energy of the debris was concentrated within 50% of the maximum dispersion radius.

  • An object in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is affected by many environmental conditions unlike earth's surface such as, Atomic oxygen (AO), Ultraviolet Radiation (UV), thermal cycling, High Vacuum and Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris (MMOD) impacts. The effect of all these parameters have to be carefully considered when designing a space structure, as it could be very critical for a space mission. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a high performance thermoplastic polymer that could be a suitable material for space missions because of its excellent resistance to these environmental factors. A thin coating of PBI polymer on the carbon epoxy composite laminate (referred as CFRP) was found to improve the energy absorption capability of the laminate in event of a hypervelocity impact. However, the overall efficiency of the shield also depends on other factors like placement and orientation of the laminates, standoff distances and the number of shielding layers. This paper studies the effectiveness of using a PBI coating on the front bumper in a multi-shock shield design for enhanced hypervelocity impact resistance. A thin PBI coating of 43 micron was observed to improve the shielding efficiency of the CFRP laminate by 22.06% when exposed to LEO environment conditions in a simulation chamber. To study the effectiveness of PBI coating in a hypervelocity impact situation, experiments were conducted on the CFRP and the PBI coated CFRP laminates with projectile velocities between 2.2 to 3.2 km/s. It was observed that the mass loss of the CFRP laminates decreased 7% when coated by a thin layer of PBI. However, the study of mass loss and damage area on a witness plate showed CFRP case to have better shielding efficiency than PBI coated CFRP laminate case. Therefore, it is recommended that PBI coating on the front bumper is not so effective in improving the overall hypervelocity impact resistance of the space structure.
