  • In this paper, we study a cross-layer and end-to-end optimization problem for the integrated wireless and wireline network that consists of one wireline core network and multiple wireless access networks. We consider joint end-to-end flow control/distribution at the transport and network layers and opportunistic scheduling at the data link and physical layers. We formulate a single stochastic optimization problem and solve it by using a dual approach and a stochastic sub-gradient algorithm. The developed algorithm can be implemented in a distributed way, vertically among communication layers and horizontally among all entities in the network, clearly showing what should be done at each layer and each entity and what parameters should be exchanged between layers and between entities. Numerical results show that our cross-layer and end-to-end optimization approach provides more efficient resource allocation than the conventional layered and separated optimization approach.

  • This paper presents a transition-limited pulse-amplitude modulation (TLPAM) signaling method to enable a high data rate and robust wireline communications. TLPAM signaling addresses the impact of high intersymbol interference (ISI) ratios in conventional M-ary PAM signaling methods by limiting the maximum voltage transition level between adjacent symbols. The implementation of a TLPAM signaling encoder is realized by setting back the most significant bits (MSBs) in the queue. The correlation between TLPAM's maximum transition level, effective data rate, and eye width/height is analyzed with various channel loss parameters, followed by characterization and measurement results with a realistic channel setup. The analysis and experimental results reveal the effectiveness of the proposed TLPAM signaling scheme for achieving a high data rate with minimal interference.

  • The 6-port phase correlator consists of one in-phase power divider and three 3-dB 90-degree phase difference power dividers, and is mainly used in a demodulation circuit that determines the phase of an input signal. This paper proposes the wideband 6-port phase correlator that consists of an in-phase power divider using a wideband 2:1 impedance transformer with three 37.5-Ω coaxial cables, and a 3-dB 90-degree phase difference power divide using Wireline. The proposed wideband phase correlator fabricated at a center frequency of 1000MHz has the value of the input reflection coefficient(S11 and S22) -14dB or less in the frequency range of 640~1270MHz. Also, the signal transmission characteristic(Si1), from the in-phase power divider input port to four output ports, has the amplitude of -6.5±0.6dB and the phase error of within ±3.4°, and the signal transmission characteristic(Si2), from the 90 degree phase difference power divider input port to four output ports, has the amplitude of -6.1±0.6dB and the phase error of within ±6.2°.

  • In the fifth generation (5G) era, the radio internet protocol capacity is expected to reach 20 Gb/s per sector, and ultralarge content traffic will travel across a faster wireless/wireline access network and packet core network. Moreover, the massive and mission-critical Internet of Things is the main differentiator of 5G services. These types of real-time and large-bandwidth-consuming services require a radio latency of less than 1 ms and an end-to-end latency of less than a few milliseconds. By distributing 5G core nodes closer to cell sites, the backhaul traffic volume and latency can be significantly reduced by having mobile devices download content immediately from a closer content server. In this paper, we propose a novel solution based on software-defined network and network function virtualization technologies in order to achieve agile management of 5G core network functionalities with a proof-of-concept implementation targeted for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and describe the results of interoperability testing experiences between two core networks.

  • Powerline communications (PLC) technology has been discussed and analyzed as a highly potential candidate of wireline access network solutions. In this paper, performance of double binary turbo coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system is analyzed and simulated in power line communications channel. In order to make power line channel environments, Bernoulli-Gaussian noise is considered. The performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that the double binary turbo coding scheme offers considerable coding gain with reasonable encoding complexity. It is also shown that the system performance can be substantially improved by increasing the number of iterations.

  • With the development of information and communication technology, the military's battle environment is changing greatly to network centric warfare in where weapon system is connected in a network and carries out mission by exchanging the real-time data. The core of the network centric warfare is Tactical Data Link(TDL) system, and subscribers of TDL exchange tactical information in real time through wireline, wireless and satellite network to share the battlefield situation. The amount of data sent and received through TDL inevitably increase as military's weapon systems equipped with TDL systems increase over time and the performance of communications equipment improves. This study proposes ways to improve the transmission speed and processing capacity of the TDL system by improving the Data Link Processor.

  • A number of very promising applications such as health monitoring and U-Health of ubiquitous techniques has attracted interest in recent years. Because it can observes the condition of patient from long distance using the equipment which combines with radio communication and medical monitoring system. If it is at emergency situation, it can disposes the condition of the patient. In this paper, we propose the new data format and the transmission communication system of combination medical information with the bluetooth. And we produce the on-board system which transmits the medical information. This system integrated the blood pressure and glucose monitor of personal medical equipment, and the medical information which obtained from on-board system acquires through the gateway with the bluetooth. Medical information is transmitted to the tele-monitor server by the wireline network. We evaluated the proposed system under the laboratory environment and confirmed the excellent performance of transmission of the medical information.

  • Recently, as wired and wireless communication services have rapidly developed and multimodal mobile devices which have various characteristics have widely spread, the need for new convergence services increases. The growing population of VoIP technologies and the high communication expense yield that the market of IP based telephony such as WiFi phone and IP phone is substituted for one of the conventional PSTN telephony. With the help of this trend, the wireline network operators desire to find a market in mobile networks. Therefore, they focus on Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) service as one of the key factors to accomplish this goal. FMC services are able to provide the mobility of voice services between circuit switched and packet switched networks. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) based Voice Call Continuity (VCC) is one of the schemes to embody FMC services. As Application Server (AS) which has this VCC function provides seamless handover of services between heterogeneous networks, FMC subscribers can communicate seamlessly with others m WiFi domain and COMA domain using WiFi-COMA dual phone. Most of enterprises have already introduced IP network infrastructure and IP-PBX (Private Branch eXchange) for telephony. However, the problems of high communication cost and work inefficiency due to frequent outside jobs or business trips have remained. In order to solve these problems, demands for enterprise FMC services increase. In this paper, we introduce a new IP-PBX based VCC model that can provide seamless handover of voice services between WiFi and COMA networks for enterprise users and we investigate some interworking and security issues between Soft Switch (SSW) and IMS, or between IMSs. In addition, we introduce a new service that can provide the continuity of voice sessions as well as video sessions using Multimedia Session Continuity (MMSC) technology which has evolved from VCC. This service is expected to be one of the next-generation personalized services based on user's context.

  • Recently, the smart grid (SG) has been introduced to solve the serious network issues caused by the increasing electrical demand and the complex nonlinear nature of the electric power distribution network. The SG, regarded as the next generation power grid, can transmit power in more efficient ways by building an automatic and distributed energy delivery network. In this paper, we first assess how various existing networking technologies, such as IEEE 802.11 (WiFi) and IEEE 802.15.4 (ZigBee), meet the requirements of the SG communication protocols. Specifically, we classify the existing network protocols into three categories: WSN-based networking, WiFi-based networking, and wireline-based networking. We then survey the security issues regarding the SG. Finally, we propose an agile SG networking architecture and show the effectiveness of different adopted networking technologies and, as a result, present a candidate solution to implement agile networking in SGs.
