This study presents a method to monitor cable force using wireless sensor nodes and piezoelectric sensors. The following approaches are carried out to achieve the objective. Firstly, the principle of piezoelectric materials (e.g., PZT) as strain sensors is reviewed. A cable force estimation method using dynamic features of cables measured by piezoelectric materials is presented. Secondly, the design of an automated cable force monitoring system using the data acquisition sensor-node Imote2/SHM-DAQ is described. The sensor node is originally developed by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is adopted in this study to monitor strain-induced voltage from PZT sensors. The advantages of the system are cheap, and eligible for wireless communication and automated operation. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed monitoring system is evaluated on a lab-scaled cable.
Methods and analysis of a simple wireless sensor concept for detecting and locating faults as well as for load monitoring are presented. The concept is based on distributed wireless sensors that are attached to the incoming and outgoing power lines of secondary substations. A sensor measures only phase current characteristics of the wire it is attached to, is not synchronized to other sensors and does not need configuration of triggering levels. The main novelty of the concept is in detecting and locating faults by combining power distribution network characteristics on system level with low power sampling methods for individual sensors. This concept enables the sensor design to be simple, energy efficient and thus applicable in new installations and for retrofit purposes in both overhead and underground electrical distribution systems.

Recently, dense sensor instrumentation for structural health monitoring has motivated the need for novel passive wireless sensors that do not require a portable power source, such as batteries. Using a layer-by-layer self-assembly process, nano-structured multifunctional carbon nanotube-based thin film sensors of controlled morphology are fabricated. Through judicious selection of polyelectrolytic constituents, specific sensing transduction mechanisms can be encoded within these homogenous thin films. In this study, the thin films are specifically designed to change electrical properties to strain and pH stimulus. Validation of wireless communications is performed using traditional magnetic coil antennas of various turns for passive RFID (radio frequency identification) applications. Preliminary experimental results shown in this study have identified characteristic frequency and bandwidth changes in tandem with varying strain and pH, respectively. Finally, ongoing research is presented on the use of gold nanocolloids and carbon nanotubes during layer-by-layer assembly to fabricate highly conductive coil antennas for wireless communications.

This paper describes the application of a wireless data acquisition system to monitor wind pressures and velocities with absolute pressure sensors and an anemometer. The system was developed for future deployment, as part of a research effort currently underway to instrument coastal homes in Florida to monitor roof wind pressures during hurricanes. The proposed wireless system will replace the current system that involves a large amount of hardwired connections from the sensors to the data processing unit that requires labor intensive wiring and preparation of the home. The paper describes comparison studies and field tests to assess the performance of the system. The new system offers the advantages of light hardware, ease of installation, capacity for 48 hours of continuous data acquisition, good frequency and amplitude responses, and a relatively simple maintenance. However, the tests also show that the shape of the shell that has been previously used to protect the sensors might interfere with the proper measurement of the pressures.
In this paper, we propose an energy monitoring and management service based on wireless sensors and a home gateway for homes and buildings. Homes and buildings have a significant energy saving potential compared with other sectors. Sensing, monitoring, and managing of the information on the energy consumption are required for an efficient energy saving service. The proposed system is composed of two main components, wireless sensor and an intelligent home gateway. Wireless sensors have the ZigBee communication interface for communication, and the intelligent home gateway is an energy portal. We expect that energy saving could be achieved with this system. As a further work, we will analyze the practical impact of the proposed service.
In a wireless sensor network (WSN) setting, this paper presents a distributed decision-making framework and illustrates its application in an online structural health monitoring (SHM) system. The objective is to recover a damage severity vector, which identifies, localizes, and quantifies damages in a structure, via distributive and collaborative decision-making among wireless sensors. Observing the fact that damages are generally scarce in a structure, this paper develops a nonlinear 0-norm minimization formulation to recover the sparse damage severity vector, then relaxes it to a linear and distributively tractable one. An optimal algorithm based on the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) and a heuristic distributed linear programming (DLP) algorithm are proposed to estimate the damage severity vector distributively. By limiting sensors to exchange information among neighboring sensors, the distributed decision-making algorithms reduce communication costs, thus alleviate the channel interference and prolong the network lifetime. Simulation results in monitoring a steel frame structure prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Lack of sufficient battery capacity is one of the most important challenges impeding the development of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Recent innovations in the areas of wireless energy transfer and rechargeable batteries have made it possible to advance WSNs. Therefore, in this article, we propose an energy-efficient charging of sensors in a WSN scenario. First, we have formulated the problem as an integer linear programming (ILP) problem. Then a utility function-based greedy algorithm named UGreedy/UF1 is proposed for solving the problem. Finally, the performance of UGreedy/UF1 is analyzed along with other baseline algorithms: UGreedy/UF2, 2-opt TSP, and Greedy TSP. The simulation results show that UGreedy/UF1 performs better than others both in terms of the deadline missing ratio of sensors and the total energy consumption of UAVs.
By interacting with external wireless sensors, smartphones can gather high-fidelity data on the surrounding environment to develop various environment-aware, personalized applications. In this work we introduce the sensor virtualization module (SVM), which virtualizes external sensors so that smartphone applications can easily utilize a large number of external sensing resources. Implemented on the Android platform, our SVM simplifies the management of external sensors by abstracting them as virtual sensors to provide the capability of resolving conflicting data requests from multiple applications and also allowing sensor data fusion for data from different sensors to create new customized sensors elements. We envision our SVM to open the possibilities of designing novel personalized smartphone applications.

In wireless sensor and actuator networks (WSANs), the network lifetime is an important criterion to measure the performance of the WSAN system. Generally, the network lifetime is mainly affected by the energy of sensors. However, the energy of sensors is limited, and the batteries of sensors cannot be replaced and charged. So, it is crucial to make energy consumption efficient. WSAN introduces multiple actuators that can be regarded as multiple collectors to gather data from their respective surrounding sensors. But how to deploy actuators to reduce the energy consumption of sensors and increase the manageability of the network is an important challenge. This research optimizes actuators deployment by a proposed probabilistic mutation multi-layer particle swarm optimization algorithm to maximize the coverage of actuators to sensors and reduce the energy consumption of sensors. Simulation results show that this method is effective for improving the coverage rate and reducing the energy consumption.

In WSN(Wireless Sensor Network) environment, a large amount of sensors, which are small and heterogeneous, generates data stream successively in physical space. These sensors are composed of measured data and metadata. Metadata includes various features such as location, sampling time, measurement unit, and their types. Until now, wireless sensors have been managed with individual specification, not the explicit standardization of metadata, so it is difficult to collect and communicate between heterogeneous sensors. To solve this problem, OGC(Open Geospatial Consortium) has proposed a SensorML(Sensor Model Language) which can manage metadata of heterogeneous sensors with unique format. In this paper, we introduce a metadata model using SensorML specification to manage various sensors, which are distributed in a wide scope. In addition, we implement the metadata management module applied to the sensor data stream management system. We provide many functions, namely generating metadata file, registering and storing them according to definition of SensorML.
