Powering wireless sensors with energy harvested from the environment is coming of age due to the increasing power densities of both storage and harvesting devices and the electronics performing energy efficient energy conversion. In order to maximize the functionality of the wireless sensor network, minimize missing packets, minimize latency and prevent the waste of energy, problems like congestion and inefficient energy usage must be addressed. Many sleep-awake protocols and efficient message priority techniques have been developed to properly manage the energy of the nodes and to minimize congestion. For a WSN that is operating in a strictly energy constrained environment, an energy-efficient transmission strategy is necessary. In this paper, we present a novel transmission priority decision scheme for a heterogeneous body sensor network composed of normal nodes and an energy harvesting node that acts as a cluster head. The energy harvesting node's decision whether or not to clear a normal node for sending is based on a set of metrics which includes the energy harvesting node's remaining energy, the total harvested energy, the type of message in a normal node's queue and finally, the implementation context of the wireless sensor network.

Wireless sensor networks(WSN) technology has various applications such as surveillance and information gathering in the uncontrollable area of human. One of major issues in WSN is the research for reducing the energy consumption and reliability of data. A system with forward error correction(FEC) can provide an objective reliability while using less transmission power than a system without FEC. In this paper, we propose to use LDPC codes of various code rate(0.53, 0.81, 0.91) for FEC for WSN. Also, we considered node-to-node interference in addition to AWGN channel. The proposed system has not only high reliable data transmission at low SNR, but also reduced transmission power usage.

Wireless sensor networks consist of small, autonomous devices with wireless networking capabilities. In order to further increase the applicability in real world applications, minimizing energy consumption is one of the most critical issues. Therefore, accurate energy model is required for the evaluation of wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we analyze the energy consumption for wireless sensor networks. To estimate the lifetime of sensor node, we have measured the energy characteristics of sensor node based on Telosb platforms running TinyOS. Based on the proposed model, the estimated lifetime of a battery powered sensor node can use about 6.925 months for 10 times motion detection per hour.

This paper proposed an algorithm that detects boundary nodes effectively in wireless sensor network. A boundary node is a sensor that lies on the border of network holes or the outer boundary of wireless sensor network. Proposed algorithm detects boundary nodes using only the position information of sensors. In addition, to improve detect performance, sensor computes the overlap area of nearest sensor first. Simulation is performed to validate the process of the proposed algorithm. In Simulation, several obstacles are placed and varying number of sensors in the range of 500~1500 are deployed in the area in order to reflect real world. The simulation results shows that proposed algorithm detects boundary nodes effectively that are located on the border of holes and the outer boundary of wireless sensor network.
Many surveillance cameras used in security system are controlled with RS-485 communication protocol. In this situation, if RS-485 connection can be replaced with wireless connection using sensor network technology, an installation will become ease because of no wired connection and also a deployment of cameras will become free. This paper explains about the design of wireless sensor node and the necessary implementation for an operation, which can be replacing RS-485 connection for the development of CCTV control system based on wireless sensor network. The hardware platform of sensor node was designed based on MicaZ and the software was developed based on TinyOS. To control surveillance cameras deployed on wide area, the supporting of multi-hop also was implemented. With the result of experiment deploying on real environment, it was revealed that the controller could control cameras quickly with wireless.

A distributed healthcare monitoring system prototype for clinical and trauma patients was developed, using wireless sensor network node. The proposed system aimed to measure various vital physiological health parameters like ECG and body temperature of patients and elderly persons, and transfer his/her health status wirelessly in Ad-hoc network to remote base station which was connected to doctor's PDA/PC or to a hospital's main Server using wireless sensor node. The system also aims to save the cost of healthcare facility for patients and the operating power of the system because sensor network is deployed widely and the distance from sensor to base station was shorter than in general centralized system. The wireless data communication will follow IEEE 802.15.4 frequency communication with ad-hoc routing thus enabling every motes attached to patients, to form a wireless data network to send data to base-station, providing mobility and convenience to the users in home environment.

In this paper, we propose the algorithms which determine 1) the efficient anchor-node visiting route of mobile sink in terms of energy supply and 2) the efficient energy amount to be charged to each anchor node, by using the information of each anchor node and the mobile sink. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) using mobile sinks can be deployed in more challenging environments such as those that are isolated or dangerous, and can also achieve a balanced energy consumption among sensors which leads to prolong the network lifetime. Most mobile sinks visit only some anchor nodes which store the data collected by the nearby sensor nodes because of their limited energy. The problem of these schemes is that the lifetime of the anchor nodes can be shorten due to the increased energy consumption, which rapidly reduces the overall lifetime of WSN. This study utilizes a mobile sink capable of wireless power transmission to solve this problem, so a mobile sink can gather data from anchor nodes while charging energy to them. Through the performance verification, it is confirmed that the number of blackout nodes and the amount of collected data are greatly improved regardless of the size of the network.

Because a sensor node in wireless sensor networks is battery operated and energy constrained, reducing energy consumption of each node is one of important issues. The clustering technique can make network topology be hierarchical and reduce energy consumption of each sensor node. In this paper, we propose an efficient clustering mechanism considering overlap avoidance in wireless sensor networks. The proposed method consists of three parts. The first is to elect cluster heads considering each node's energy. Then clusters are formed by using signal strength in the second phase. Finally we can reduce the cluster overlap problem derived from two or more clusters. In addition, this paper includes performance evaluation of our algorithm. Simulation results show that network lifetime was extended up to 75 percents than LEACH and overlapped clusters are decreased down to nearly zero percents.
In wireless sensor networks, fair allocation of bandwidth among different nodes is one of the critical problems that effects the serviceability of the entire system. Fair bandwidth allocation mechanisms, like fair queuing, usually need to maintain state, manage buffers, and perform packet scheduling on a per flow basis, and this complexity may prevent them from being cost-effectively implemented and widely deployed. It is a very important and difficult technical issue to provide packet scheduling architecture for fairness in wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we propose an packet scheduling architecture for sensor node, called FISN (Fairness Improvement Sensor Network), that significantly reduces this implementation complexity yet still achieves approximately fair bandwidth allocations. Sensor node for sensing estimate the incoming rate of each sensor device and insert a label into each transmission packet header based on this estimate. Sensor node for forwarding maintain no per flow state; they use FIFO packet scheduling augmented by a probabilistic dropping algorithm that uses the packet labels and an estimate of the aggregate traffic at the gathering node. We present the detailed design, implementation, and evaluation of FISN using simulation. We discuss the fairness improvement and practical engineering challenges of implementing FISN in an experimental sensor network test bed based on ns-2.

Consider a typical wireless sensor network in which stem nodes form the backbone network of mesh topology while each stem node together with leaf nodes in its vicinity forms a subnetwork of star topology. In such a wireless sensor network, we must heed the following when we design a MAC scheme supporting the packet delivery from a leaf node to a stem node. First, leaf nodes are usually battery-powered and it is difficult to change or recharge their batteries. Secondly, a wireless sensor network is often deployed to collect and update data periodically. Late delivery of a data segment by a sensor node causes the sink node to defer data processing and the data segment itself to be obsolete. Thirdly, extensive signaling is extremely limited and complex computation is hardly supported. Taking account of these facts, a MAC scheme must be able to save energy and support timeliness in packet delivery while being simple and robust as well. In this paper, we propose a version of ALOHA as a MAC scheme for a wireless sensor network. While conserving the simplicity and robustness of the original version of ALOHA, the proposed version of ALOHA possesses a distinctive feature that a sensor node decides between stop and continuation prior to each delivery attempt for a packet. Such a decision needs a stopping rule and we suggest a Bayes stopping rule. Note that a Bayes stopping rule minimizes the Bayes risk which reflects the energy, timeliness and throughput losses. Also, a Bayes stopping rule is practical since a sensor node makes a decision only using its own history of delivery attempt results and the prior information about the failure in delivery attempt. Numerical examples confirm that the proposed version of ALOHA employing a Bayes stopping rule is a useful MAC scheme in the severe environment of wireless sensor network.
