  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are composed of a large number of sensor nodes. Battery-powered sensor nodes have limited coverage; therefore, it is more efficient to transmit data via multi-hop communication. The network lifetime is a crucial issue in WSNs and the multi-hop routing protocol should be designed to prolong the network lifetime. Prolonging the network lifetime can be achieved by minimizing the power consumed by the nodes, as well as by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. A power imbalance can reduce the network lifetime even if several nodes have sufficient (battery) power. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes. To improve the balance of power consumption and improve the network lifetime, the proposed routing scheme adaptively controls the transmission range using a power control according to the residual power in the nodes. We developed a routing simulator to evaluate the performance of the proposed routing protocol. The simulation results show that the proposed routing scheme increases power balancing and improves the network lifetime.

  • In this work, we consider the optimization problem of minimizing energy consumption for real-time multicast over wireless multi-hop networks. Previously, a distributed primal-dual subgradient algorithm was used for finding a solution to the optimization problem. However, the traditional subgradient algorithms have drawbacks in terms of i) sensitivity to iteration parameters; ii) need for saving previous iteration results for computing the optimization results at the current iteration. To overcome these drawbacks, using a joint network coding and scheduling optimization framework, we propose a novel distributed primal-dual Random Deflected Subgradient (RDS) algorithm for solving the optimization problem. Furthermore, we derive the corresponding recursive formulas for the proposed RDS algorithm, which are useful for practical applications. In comparison with the traditional subgradient algorithms, the illustrated performance results show that the proposed RDS algorithm can achieve an improved optimal solution. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is stable and robust against the choice of parameter values used in the algorithm.

  • The goal of wireless sensor networks is to collect sensing data on specific region over wireless communication. Sink node gathers all local sensing data, processes and transmits them to users who use sensor networks. Generally, senor nodes are low-cost, low power devices with limited sensing, computation and wireless communication capabilities. And sensor network applies to multi-hop communication on large-scale network. As neighboring sensor nodes have similar data, clustering is more effective technique for 'data-aggregation'. In cluster formation technique based on multi-hop, it is necessary that the number of cluster member nodes should be distributed equally because of the balance of cluster formation To achieve this, we propose a method to customize cluster member nodes for energy-efficiency in wireless sensor networks.

  • In wireless ad hoc networks, packet loss and latency are frequently occurred by movement of node. As the number of transmission hops increases in these networks, the throughput is increasingly deteriorated. In this paper, we design the wireless ad hoc network system based on IEEE 802.16j MMR (Mobile Multi-hop Relay), which improves the network performance. Our wireless ad hoc network system used adaptively the nearest BS and Farthest BS scheduling algorithms for efficient data transmission and chose the optimal path that minimize data loss and latency. In order to evaluate performance of the wireless ad hoc network system based on IEEE 802.16j MMR, we used the LWX (Light Wimax) model of NS-2 simulator. Through the simulation, we analyzed the network performance for various scenarios.

  • Recently, lot of researches for the multi-level protocol have been done to balance the sensor node energy consumption of WSN and improve the node efficiency to extend the life of the entire network. Especially in multi-hop protocol, a variety of models have been proposed to improve energy efficiency and apply it to WSN protocol. In this paper, we analyze LEACH algorithm and propose new method based on center of local clustering routing algorithm in wireless sensor networks. We also perform NS-2 simulation to show the performance of our model.

  • Wireless sensor networks (WSN) consisting of a largenumber of sensors aims to gather data in a variety of environments and is beingused and applied in many different fields. The sensor nodes composing a sensornetwork operate on battery of limited power and as a result, high energyefficiency and long network lifetime are major goals of research in the WSN. Inthis paper we propose a novel cluster-based local multi-hop routing protocolthat enhances the overall energy efficiency and guarantees reliability in thesystem. The proposed protocol minimizes energy consumption for datatransmission among sensor nodes by forming a multi-hop in the cluster. Moreover, through local cluster head rotation scheme, it efficiently manageswaste of energy caused by frequent formation of clusters which was an issue inthe existing methods. Simulation results show that our scheme enhances energyefficiency and ensure longer network time in the sensor network as comparedwith existing schemes such as LEACH, LEACH-C and PEACH.

  • In this paper, we propose an energy efficient hybrid MAC protocol for multi-hop wireless sensor networks. The proposed MAC protocol used a hybrid mechanism, in which contention-based MAC protocol and contention free MAC protocol are combined. The sensor nodes located far from the sink node usually send few data packet since they try to send measured data by themselves. So contention-based MAC protocol is useful among them. But other nodes located near sink node usually have lots of data packets since they plays as a relay node. Contention-based MAC protocol among them is not suitable. Using contention-based MAC protocol in heavy data traffic environment, packet collisions and transmission delay may increase. In this paper, slot assignment between sender nodes by sink node is used. The proposed mechanism is efficient in energy and latency. Results showed that our MAC protocol outperformed other protocol in terms of data packet delivery delay and energy consumption.

  • If a certain relay node in multi-hop wireless networks might become a malicious node that does not cooperate with other nodes or a selfish node, network throughput will be dramatically decreased. Most of existing ad hoc routing protocols assuming that the nodes will fully cooperate with other nodes do not resolve the problem of network performance degradation due to malicious and selfish nodes. This paper presents the CARE (Cooperative Ad hoc routing protocol based REputation) scheme incorporating the reputation management that can achieve a multi-hop wireless network with high throughput performance. The proposed scheme provides the horizontal cross-layer approach which can identify misbehaving malicious, selfish nodes dropped out of the hop-by-hop based packet processing in the network and then set up an optimal packet routing path that will detour misbehaving nodes. And the vertical cross-layer approach contained in the CARE scheme attempts to improve the quality of routing paths by exploiting the quality of link information received from the MAC layer. Besides, it provides high TCP throughput by exploiting the reputation values of nodes acquired from the network layer into the transport layer. A case study on experiments and simulations shows that the CARE scheme incorporating vertical and horizontal cross-layer approaches yields better performance in terms of the low rate of packet loss, fast average packet delivery time, and high TCP throughput between end-to-end nodes.

  • Previously, PCC and RFCC were proposed for the network coding possibility test of flow-intersecting nodes in a multi-hop wireless network. PCC works correctly only if there is only one intersecting node. RFCC solves this problem by defining the network coding conditions with considering decoding possibility at intermediate nodes. However, this may increase decoding possibility test overhead and coding operations at intermediate nodes. In this paper, we define DCC which can decrease this overhead by allowing decoding only at destinations. We analyze the performance of DCC by simulations.

  • In this paper, we analyze the maximum throughput of opportunistic routing along a long-haul multi-hop wireless network path for a single data stream, while considering link-level interference among the network nodes. Surprisingly, we find out that opportunistic routing does not provide much improvement in throughput for long-haul paths. The results of this research show that when we compare the extra cost for the complex implementation of the opportunistic routing scheme to the performance improvement obtained from it, opportunistic routing scheme needs to be applied to only short-haul multi-hop wireless network paths.
