Aeroelastic phenomena of a wind turbine include stall-induced vibrations and classical flutters. The classical flutter occurs due to coalescence between bending mode and torsion mode. It is typically the aeroelastic instability of an aircraft wing. Different from the classical flutter, the stall-induced vibration is the instability in lead-lag mode due to negative aerodynamic dampings. In the present study, the three degree of freedom aeroelastic model of a wind turbine blade is introduced to characterize and analyze its aeroelastic phenomena. The numerical results show that the aeroelastic stability of flap-lag motion is more unstable than that of flap-pitch motion and the aeroelastic characteristics of lead-lag motion can become unstable as wind speed increases.

In order to reduce the download around the Smart UAV(SUAV) at Transition mode, flow control using synthetic jet has been performed. Many of the complex tilt rotor flow features are captured including the leading and trailing edge separation, and the large region of separated flow beneath the wing. Based on the results of part 1 of the present work, synthetic jet is located at 0.01c, $0.95c_{flap}$ and it is operated with the non-dimensional frequency of 0.5, 5 to control the leading edge and trailing edge separation. Consequently, download is substantially reduced compared to with no control case at transition mode using leading edge jet only. The present results show that the overall flight performance and stability of the SUAV can be remarkably improved by applying the active flow control strategy based on synthetic jet.

A study on the test, design and fabrication of wind tunnel model for measurement of air load distribution on wing surfaces is presented. 447 pressure taps are installed normal to the wing surfaces, and measured by PSI-8400 system using total 8 ESPs modules installed in the model. The test was performed at 50 m/sec constant speed in the low speed wind tunnel of Agency for Defense Development. Tests were carried out to determine effects of angle of attack, angle of sideslip and flap and stores for the load distribution of wing. The test results in this paper can be applied to the design optimization of structure and validation of computational fluid dynamics.
In this study an analysis on flight characteristics and flight control methods for a wing in ground effect vehicle is made. In order to closely view its nonlinearity a few limit cycles are examined and related to the characteristics of the linearized systems. Several flight control methods are compared for the cruise mode with initial height error and command tracking mode of ascending, cruise, and descending. In comparison performance and the implementation aspects are examined. For the possible control inputs, combinations of elevator, thrust, and flap are considered and LQR-based output command tracking scheme is applied in the control system design.

Morphing wing which has a configuration optimized to flight speed and condition is faced to a lot of barriers to be overcome such as actuator technique, structural mechanization technique, flexible skin material, control law, and so on. As the first step for developing a morphing wing with rapid response, we designed and fabricated the morphing airfoil using a SMA(shape memory alloy) wire actuator and torsional bias springs. The design concept of the morphing airfoil was verified through operation test. The measured results show that the flap deflects smoothly and fast.

Wind tunnel test for Forward-Swept wing airplane model, a part of the Korea-Russia technical cooperation program has been conducted at both TsAGI T-102 and KARI LSWT. The results of TsAGI T-102, obtained by using a unique wire-suspension model support system, and KARI LSWT, used tripod and tandem strut arrangement configuration, are compared with various model conditions including control surface deflection such as flap, aileron, elevator and rudder. Good agreement in the value of drag-polar is observed between TsAGI T-102 and KARI LSWT data. The lateral and directional stability coefficients with rudder and aileron deflection represent a good agreement in both facility.

Creatures in nature flap their wings to generate fluid dynamic forces that are required for the locomotion. Small-size creatures do not use flapping wings. Thus, it is questionable at which Reynolds number the propulsion using the flapping wings are effective. In this paper, the onset conditions of the thrust generation from the combined motion of flat plates (heaving, pitching in the motion and also tandem, biplane in the array) is investigated using a Lattice Boltzmann method. To solve the pitching motion of the plate on the regularly spaced lattices, 2-D moving boundary condition was implemented. The present method is validated by comparing the wake patterns behind a oscillating circular cylinder and its hydrodynamic characteristics with the CFD results. Present method can be applied to the design of micro flapping propulsors for biomedical use.

An analysis procedure for the combined problem of control algorithm and aeroelastic system which is based on the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) technique has been developed. The aerodynamic forces in the transonic region are calculated from the transonic small disturbance(TSD) theory. An linear quadratic regulator(LQR) controller is designed to suppress the transonic flutter. The optimal control gain is estimated by solving the discrete-time Riccati equation. The system identification technique rebuilds the CFD-based aeroelstic system in order to form an adequate system matrix which involved in the discrete-time Riccati equation. Finally the controller, that is constructed on the basis of system identification technique, is used to suppress the flutter phenomenon of the airfoil with attached store. This approach, that is, the CFD-based aeroservoelasticity design, can be utilized for the development of effective flutter controller design in the transonic region.
A three-dimensional inviscid flow solver has been developed based on unstructured meshes for the simulation of steady and unsteady flowfields around a generic fighter aircraft and for the investigation of the aerodynamic interference between the external stores and the tail surfaces. The flow solver is based on a vertex-centered finite-volume method and an implicit point Gauss-Seidel relaxation scheme. To validate the flow solver, calculations were made for a steady flow and the computed results were compared with experimental data. An unsteady time-accurate computation of the generic fighter aircraft with external stores at transonic flight conditions showed that the external stores cause undesirable vibration on the horizontal tail surface due to the mutual interference between their wake and the horizontal tail surface. It was shown that downward deflection of the trailing edge flap significantly reduces the undesirable interference effect.
One of the devices to prevent separated flow over a wing or a flap at high angle of attack is a vortex generator. In the present work, we numerically study the flow around a low-profile or micro vortex generator whose height is less than local boundary layer thickness which can delay separation with a minimum drag penalty owing to its very small wetted surface area. As a first step toward a parametric study to efficiently design this MVG flow control system, we simulate the flow around a single MVG on a flat plate. For the simulation, we employ OpenFOAM with Launder-Sharma ${\kappa}$-epsilon model. The analysis results are validated by comparing with experimental results of a rectangular MVG at an angle of attack of 10 degrees whose height is 20% of local boundary layer. Important results and aspects of this numerical study are discussed. We also simulate the flow around rectangular, triangular and trapezoidal MVGs and the results are compared
