As the demand for reducing carbon emissions increases, efforts to reduce the usage of fossil fuels and research on renewable energy are also increasing. Among the various renewable energy harvesting techniques, the floating offshore wind turbine has several advantages. Compared to other technologies, it has fewer installation limitations due to interference with human activity. Additionally, a large wind turbine farm can be constructed in the open ocean. Therefore, it is important to conduct motion analysis of floating offshore wind turbines in waves during the initial stage of conceptual design. In this study, a frequency motion analysis was conducted on a semi-submersible type floating offshore wind turbine. The analysis focused on the effects of varying trim on the motion characteristics. Specifically, motion response analysis was performed on heave, roll, and pitch. Natural period analysis confirmed that changing the trim angle did not significantly affect the heave and pitch motions, but it did have a regular impact on the roll motion.
A cylindrical structure has a very long period of heave and pitch motion response in ocean waves. To obtain the dynamic stability of a cylindrical structure, it is necessary to obtain the suitable metacentric height (GM). However, in a structure with sufficient metacentric height, Mathieu instability can occur if the natural frequency of the heave motion is double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion. This study carried out numerical calculations and experiments for vertical-axis wind turbines with cylindrical floaters, which had three different centers of gravity. In the regular wave experiment, the divergence of the structure motion without yaw was observed when the natural frequency of the heave motion was double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion. In the irregular wave experiment, the motion spectra of the structures with the different centers of gravity were compared, and one was very high when the natural frequency of the heave motion was double the natural frequency of the roll and pitch motion.
Jack-up type WTIV(Wind Turbine Installation Vessel) is used to avoid the effects of waves when installing wind turbines in the Southwest Sea of South Korea. During the preloading procedure, unexpected penetration may cause some risks such as excessive penetration or punch-through failure. To ensure the safety of the WTIV during preloading, the bearing capacities should be evaluated based on the soil data at each borehole. Eight boreholes (OW-1 to -8) have been drilled in the Southwest Sea of South Korea. The bearing capacities of a spudcan designed to be used in this district are calculated using both a conventional analysis and finite element analysis with the soil properties of OW-1 to -8. A finite element analysis is carried out for OW-1, -3, and -4 to gain an in-depth understanding of the soil behavior during the penetration. OW-1, -3, and -4 are representative boreholes for a strong layer overlying a soft layer, a general soft layer, and a soft layer overlying a strong layer, respectively. The resultant bearing capacity curves versus the depth of the numerical analysis are compared with the conventional method. The results show that the conventional analysis is conservative. Case studies for different spudcan areas and shapes are also conducted to seek an appropriate spudcan type for the Southwest Sea of South Korea. Finally, a spudcan with a rectangular shape and a bearing area of $112.8m^2$ is selected.

The superconducting synchronous generator is one of the breakthrough elements for direct-drive wind turbines because it is light and small. Normally the superconducting one has copper armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The high resistance of the armature can make large copper losses, comparing with the conventional generators with a gear box. One of the solutions for the large copper losses could be a fully superconducting generator. But the high magnetic fields from the superconducting field windings on the rotor also make high perpendicular magnetic fields on the superconducting tapes in the armature windings. We have proposed a fully superconducting synchronous generator with dual field windings. It could immensely decrease the circumferential component of the magnetic field from the field windings at the armature windings. In this paper, we conceptually designed 3 types of superconducting synchronous generators. The first one is the fully superconducting one with conventional structure, which has superconducting armature windings in the stator and superconducting field windings on the rotor. The second one is the one with dual superconducting field windings and superconducting armature windings between them. The last one is the same as the third one except the structure of the armature. If the concentrated armature windings are superconducting ones with cryostats, then they cannot be installed within the span of 2 poles. So, we adopted 3 phases windings within 4 poles system. It makes more AC losses but can be manufactured really.
In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.
The world is moving towards a post-carbon society and needs clean and renewable energy for sustainable development. There are many methodological approaches which are helping this shift based on analyzed data about energy resources and which focus on limited types of energy including liquid fossil, solid fossil, gaseous fossil, and biomass (e.g. IPCC Guidelines, ISO 14064-1, WRI Protocol, etc.). We should also consider environmental impact (e.g. greenhouse gas emissions, water use, etc.) and the economic cost of the renewable energy to make a better decision. Recently, researchers have addressed the environmental impact of new technologies which include photovoltaics, wind turbines, hydroelectric power, and biofuel. In this work, we analyze the environmental impact with a carbon emission factor to present a correlation between $CO_2$ emission and the cost of energy resources standardized by the energy output. In addition, we reviewed Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as another methodology. Researchers who are studying energy systems have ignored the impacts of entire energy systems, e.g. the extraction and processing of fossil fuels. In power sector, the assessment should include extraction, processing, and transportation of fuels, building of power plants, production of electricity, and waste disposal. Therefore LCA could be more suitable tool for energy cost and environmental impact estimation.
A Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) model is proposed to eliminate the short-term voltage disturbances that occur in the grid-connected mode, the switching between grid-connected mode and the stand-alone mode of a Microgrid. The proposed DVR structure is based on a conventional cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (MLI) topology; a novel composite control strategy is presented, which could ensure the compensation ability of voltage sag by the DVR. Moreover, the compensation to specified order of harmonic is added to implement effects that zero-steady error compensation to harmonic voltage in specified order of the presented control strategy; utilizing wind turbines-batteries units as DC energy storage components in the Microgrid, the operation cost of the DVR is reduced. When the Microgrid operates under stand-alone mode, the DVR can operate on microsource mode, which could ease the power supply from the main grid (distribution network) and consequently be favorable for energy saving and emission reduction. Simulation results validate the robustness and effective of the proposed DVR system.

The weight estimation of floating offshore structures such as FPSO, TLP, semi-Submersibles, Floating Offshore Wind Turbines etc. in the preliminary design, is one of important measures of both construction cost and basic performance. Through both literature investigation and internet search, the weight data of floating offshore structures such as FPSO and TLP was collected. In this study, the weight estimation model was suggested for FPSO. The weight estimation model using non-linear regression analysis was established by fixing independent variables based on this data and the multiple regression analysis was introduced into the weight estimation model. Its reliability was within 4% of error rate.
Unbundled power quality service is paid much attention under the circumstances of deregulation and diversification of needs of customers for quality and price of electric power. Moreover, distributed generators (DGs) such as photovoltaic generations and wind turbines will be introduced to distribution system more and more, and reverse flow of active power has possibility to cause new problems in the distribution system such as voltage rise of distribution line and protection problem. Flexible, Reliable and Intelligent Electrical eNergy Delivery System, which is called FRIENDS, has been proposed as one of promising distribution system for such requirements, and intensive studies are under way. One of features of the system is introducing Quality Control Center (QCC) into the system for unbundled power quality service and easy installation of DGs. Two types of QCCs for such purposes are proposed, and simulation results are shown in this paper.
