  • Cold regions with high air density and wind speed attract wind energy producers across the globe exhibiting its potential for wind exploitation. However, exposure of wind turbine blades to such cold conditions bring about devastating impacts like aerodynamic degradation, production loss and blade failures etc. A series of wind tunnel tests were performed to investigate the effect of icing on the aerodynamic properties of wind turbine blades. A baseline clean wing configuration along with four different ice accretion geometries were considered in this study. Aerodynamic force coefficients were obtained from the surface pressure measurements made over the test model using MPS4264 Simultaneous pressure scanner. 3D printed Ice templates featuring different ice geometries based on Icing Research Tunnel data is utilized. Aerodynamic characteristics of both the clean wing configuration and Ice accreted geometries were analysed over a wide range of angles of attack (α) ranging from 0° to 24° with an increment of 3° for three different Reynolds number in the order of 105. Results show a decrease in aerodynamic characteristics of the iced aerofoil when compared against the baseline clean wing configuration. The key flow field features such as point of separation, reattachment and formation of Laminar Separation Bubble (LSB) for different icing geometries and its influence on the aerodynamic characteristics are addressed. Additionally, attempts were made to understand the influence of Reynolds number on the iced-aerofoil aerodynamics.

  • This study proposes a interim development result for the l-㎾ class small wind turbine system, which is applicable to relatively low wind speed regions like Korea and has the variable pitch control mechanism. In the aerodynamic design of the wind turbine blade, parametric studies were carried out to determine an optimum aerodynamic configuration which is not only more efficient at low wind speed but whose diameter is not much larger than similar class other blades. A light composite structure, which can endure effectively various loads, was newly designed. In order to evaluate the structural design of the composite blade, the structural analysis was performed by the finite element method. Moreover both structural safety and stability were verified through the full-scale structural test.

  • This paper addresses on a wind power system with BESS(Battery Energy Storage System). The concerned system consists of four parts: the wind speed production model, the wind turbine model, configure capacity of the battery energy storage, battery model and control of the BESS. First of all, we produce wind speed by 4-component composite wind speed model. Secondly, the maximum available wind power is determined by analyzing the produced wind speed and the characteristic curve of wind power. Thirdly, we configure capacity of the BESS according to wind speed and characteristic curve of wind speed-power. Then, we propose a control strategy to track the power reference. Finally, some simulations have been demonstrated to visualize the feasibility of the proposed methodology.

  • This paper introduces the design concepts and characteristics of WinDS3000$^{TM}$(TC IIa) which is a trade name of Doosan's 3MW offshore/onshore wind turbine. WinDS3000$^{TM}$(TC IIa) has been designed in consideration of high Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Serviceability (RAMS) and low cost of electricity (CDE) for the TC IIa condition based on GL guideline. An integrated drive-train design with an innovative three-stage gearbox has been introduced to minimize nacelle weight of the wind turbine and to enhance a high reliability for transmission. A permanent magnet generator with full converter system has been introduced to get higher efficiency in partial load operation and grid-friendly system for both 50 Hz and 60 Hz. A pitch-regulated variable speed control system has been introduced to control wind turbine power while generator reaction torque can be adjusted almost instantaneously by the associated power electronics. The wind turbine has been also equipped with condition monitoring and diagnostic systems in order to meet maintainability requirements.

  • The effects of BPC (blade pitch control) on FOWT (floating offshore wind turbine) motions and generated power are investigated by using a fully-coupled turbine-floater-mooring simulation program. In this regard, two example FOWTs, OC4-5MW semi-submersible FOWT and KRISO four-3MW-units FOWT, are selected since the numerical simulations of those two FOWTs have been verified against experiments in authors' previous studies. Various simulations are performed changing BPC natural frequency (BPCNF), BPC damping ratio (BPCDR), and wind speeds. Through the numerical simulations, it was demonstrated that negative damping can happen for platform pitch motions and its influences are affected by BPCNF, BPCDR, and wind speeds. If BPCNF is significantly larger than platform-pitch natural frequency, the pitch resonance can be very serious due to the BPC-induced negative-damping effects, which should be avoided in the FOWT design. If wind speed is significantly higher than the rated wind velocity, the negative damping effects start to become reduced. Other important findings are also given through systematic sensitivity investigations.

  • his dissertation is on power control system for MW-class wind turbine. Especially, the control purpose is reduction in electrical power and rotor speed. The base control structure is power curve tracking control using variable speed variable pitch operational type. For the reduction of fluctuations, more control algorithm is needed in above rated wind conditions. Because general pitch control system is low dynamic response as compared with the wind speed change. So, this paper introduces about the pitch feed forward control to minimize fluctuations of the electrical power and rotor speed. To maintain rated electrical power, the algorithm of feed forward control adds feed forward pitch amount to the pitch command of power curve tracking control. The effectiveness of the feed forward control is verified through the simulation.

  • This paper proposes a new fuzzy speed control method based on Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy method of permanent magnet synchronous generators(PMSM) for variable-speed wind turbine systems. The proposed fuzzy speed controller consists of the control terms that compensate for the nonlinearity of PMSG and the control terms that stabilize the error dynamics. The conditions are derived for the existence of the proposed speed controller, and the gain matrices of the controller are given. The proposed control method can guarantee that the PMSG can effectively track the speed reference which is calculated through the MPPT control and can reduce the fluctuations of the generated power under even fast random wind conditions. To verify the performance of the proposed fuzzy speed controller, the simulation results are demonstrated.

  • This paper proposes a low-cost power converter for micro wind turbine systems using permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG). The proposed converter consists of a two-leg three-phase PWM inverter for the generator control and a single-phase half-bridge PWM converter which is connected to the utility grid. For the two separate DC-link voltages, a balancing control is added and the adverse effect of the DC-link voltage ripples on the inverter output voltage is compensated. The control performance of the proposed converter topology for the micro wind turbine system is shown by the simulation results using PSIM software.
