The paper describes a study about effects of upstream hills on design wind loads using two mathematical approaches: Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Artificial Neural Network (NN for short). For this purpose CFD and NN tools have been developed using an object-oriented approach and C++ programming language. The CFD tool consists of solving the Reynolds time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model using body-fitted nearly-orthogonal coordinate system. Subsequently, design wind load parameters such as speed-up ratio values have been generated for a wide spectrum of two-dimensional hill geometries that includes isolated and multiple steep and shallow hills. Ground roughness effect has also been considered. Such CFD solutions, however, normally require among other things ample computational time, background knowledge and high-capacity hardware. To assist the enduser, an easier, faster and more inexpensive NN model trained with the CFD-generated data is proposed in this paper. Prior to using the CFD data for training purposes, extensive validation work has been carried out by comparing with boundary layer wind tunnel (BLWT) data. The CFD trained NN (CFD-NN) has produced speed-up ratio values for cases such as multiple hills that are not covered by wind design standards such as the Commentaries of the National Building Code of Canada (1995). The CFD-NN results compare well with BLWT data available in literature and the proposed approach requires fewer resources compared to running BLWT experiments.
The effects of steep and shallow hills on a stationary tornado-like vortex with a swirl ratio of 0.4 are simulated and quantified as Fractional Speed Up Ratios (FSUR) at three different locations of the vortex with respect to the crests of the hills. Steady state Reynolds Averaged Naiver Stokes (RANS) equations closed using Reynolds Stress Turbulence model are used to simulate stationary tornadoes. The tornado wind field obtained from the numerical simulations is first validated with previous experimental and numerical studies by comparing radial and tangential velocities, and ground static pressure. A modified fractional speed-up ratio (FSUR) evaluation technique, appropriate to the complexity of the tornadic flow, is then developed. The effects of the hill on the radial, tangential and vertical flow components are assessed. It is observed that the effect of the hill on the radial and vertical component of the flow is more pronounced, compared to the tangential component. Besides, the presence of the hill is also seen to relocate the center of tornadic flow. New FSUR values are produced for shallow and steep hills.
Various studies have been conducted on pedestrian-level wind environments around buildings. With regard to the speed-up mechanism of pedestrian-level winds, there are references to downwash effect due to the vertical pressure gradient of boundary layer flow and venturi effect due to flow blocking by the building. Two factors contribute to increase or decrease of downwash effect: change in twodimensional / three-dimensional air flow pattern (Type 1) and change in downwash wind speed due to building size that does not accompany change in airflow pattern (Type 2). Previous studies have shown that downwash effect has a greater influence in increasing or decreasing the area of strong wind than venturi effect. However, these considerations are derived from the horizontal mean wind speed distribution at pedestrian level and are not the result of three-dimensional flow field around the building. Therefore, in this study, Computational Fluid Dynamics using Large Eddy Simulation were performed to verify the downwash phenomena that contributes to increase in wind speed at pedestrian level.
For the past three decades a significant amount of research has been conducted on bridge flutter. Wind tunnel tests for a 2000 m class twin-box suspension bridge have revealed that a twin-box deck carrying 4 m tall 50% open area ratio wind screens at the deck edges achieved higher critical wind speeds for onset of flutter than a similar deck without wind screens. A result at odds with the well-known behavior for the mono-box deck. The wind tunnel tests also revealed that the critical flutter wind speed increased if the bridge deck assumed a nose-up twist relative to horizontal when exposed to high wind speeds - a phenomenon termed the "nose-up" effect. Static wind tunnel tests of this twin-box cross section revealed a positive moment coefficient at 0° angle of attack as well as a positive moment slope, ensuring that the elastically supported deck would always meet the mean wind flow at ever increasing mean angles of attack for increasing wind speeds. The aerodynamic action of the wind screens on the twin-box bridge girder is believed to create the observed nose-up aerodynamic moment at 0° angle of attack. The present paper reviews the findings of the wind tunnel tests with a view to gain physical insight into the "nose-up" effect and to establish a theoretical model based on numerical simulations allowing flutter predictions for the twin-box bridge girder.

In this paper, a wind power simulator is designed and implemented. To realize the torque of wind blade, a DC motor is used as a variable torque input device. An induction machine is used as a generator of which speed is controlled to maintain the optimal tip speed ratio during wind speed change. Input torque of system is controlled by armature current of DC motor and speed is controlled by generator control unit using field oriented control algorithm. Various control algorithms such as MPPT, soft start up, the simulator reactive power control, can be developed and tested using the simulator.

Onshore wind turbines may experience substantially different wind loads depending on their working conditions, i.e. rotation velocity of rotor blades, incoming freestream wind velocity, pitch angle of rotor blades, and yaw angle of the wind-turbine tower. In the present study, aerodynamic loads acting on a horizontal axis wind turbine were accordingly quantified for the high tip speed ratio (TSR) at high yaw angles because these conditions have previously not been adequately addressed. This was analyzed experimentally on a small-scale wind-turbine model in a boundary layer wind tunnel. The wind-tunnel simulation of the neutrally stratified atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) developing above a flat terrain was generated using the Counihan approach. The ABL was simulated to achieve the conditions of a wind-turbine model operating in similar inflow conditions to those of a prototype wind turbine situated in the lower atmosphere, which is another important aspect of the present work. The ABL and wind-turbine simulation length scale factors were the same (S=300) in order to satisfy the Jensen similarity criterion. Aerodynamic loads experienced by the wind-turbine model subjected to the ABL simulation were studied based on the high frequency force balance (HFFB) measurements. Emphasis was put on the thrust force and the bending moment because these two load components have previously proven to be dominant compared to other load components. The results indicate several important findings. The loads were substantially higher for TSR=10 compared to TSR=5.6. In these conditions, a considerable load reduction was achieved by pitching the rotor blades. For the blade pitch angle at 90°, the loads were ten times lower than the loads of the rotating wind-turbine model. For the blade pitch angle at 12°, the loads were at 50% of the rotating wind-turbine model. The loads were reduced by up to 40% through the yawing of the wind-turbine model, which was observed both for the rotating and the parked wind-turbine model.

An experimental investigation on the wind flow over smooth bell-shaped two-dimensional hills with hill slopes (the ratio of height to half width) of 0.3 and 0.5 is performed in an atmospheric boundary-layer wind tunnel. Two categories of the models are used in the present investigation; six two-dimensional single-hills, and four continuous double-hills. The measurements of the flow field and surface static-pressure distribution are carried out over the Reynolds number (based on the hill height) of 1.9 $\times 10^4, 3.3 \times 10^4, and 5.6 \times 10^4$. The velocity profiles and turbulence characteristics are measured by the pitot-tube and X-type hot-wire anemometer, respectively. The undisturbed boundary-layer profile on the bottom surface of the wind tunnel is reasonably consistent with the power-law profile with $\alpha = 7.0 (1/\alpha$ is the power-law exponent) and shows good spanwise uniformities. The profiles of turbulent intensity are found to be consistent along the centerline of the wind tunnel. The measured non-dimensional speed-up profiles at the hill crest show good agreements with the predictions of Jackson and Hunt's linear theory. The flow separation occurs in the hill slope of 0.5, and the oil-ink dot method is used to find the reattachment points in the leeside of the hill. The measured reattachment points are compared with the numerical predictions. Comparisons of the mean velocity profiles and surface pressure distributions between the numerical predictions and the experimental results show good agreements.
In the Haeundae area of Busan, South Korea, damage has continued to occur recently from building wind from caused by dense skyscrapers. Five wind observation stations were installed near LCT residential towers in Haeundae to analyze the effect of building winds during typhoon Omais. The impact of building wind was analyzed through relative and absolute evaluations. At an intersection located southeast of LCT (L-2), the strongest wind speed was measured during the monitoring. The maximum average wind speed for one minute was observed to be 38.93 m/s, which is about three times stronger than at an ocean observation buoy (12.7 m/s) at the same time. It is expected that 3 to 4 times stronger wind can be induced under certain conditions compared to the surrounding areas due to the building wind effect. In a Beaufort wind scale analysis, the wind speed at an ocean observatory was mostly distributed at Beaufort number 4, and the maximum was 8. At L-2, more than 50% of the wind speed exceeded Beaufort number 4, and numbers up to 12 were observed. However, since actual measurement has a limitation in analyzing the entire range, cross-validation with computational fluid dynamics simulation data is required to understand the characteristics of building winds.
Estimations of wind flow over terrain are often needed for applications such as pollutant dispersion, transport safety or wind farm location. Whilst field studies offer very detailed information regarding the wind potential over a small region, the cost of instrumenting a natural fetch alone is prohibitive. Wind tunnels offer one alternative although wind tunnel simulations can suffer from scale effects and high costs as well. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) offers a second alternative which is increasingly seen as a viable one by wind engineers. There are two issues associated with CFD however, that of accuracy of the predictions and set-up and simulation times. This paper aims to address the two issues by demonstrating, by way of an investigation of wind potential for the Askervein Hill, that a good level of accuracy can be obtained with CFD (10% for the speed up ratio) and that it is possible to automate the simulations in order to compute a full wind rose efficiently. The paper shows how a combination of script and session files can be written to drive and automate CFD simulations based on commercial software. It proposes a general methodology for the automation of CFD applied to the computation of wind flow over a region of interest.
The A1B scenario predicts that the mean air temperature of South Korea will rise up to $3.8^{\circ}C$ by 2071. However, the effects of ecosystem services are declining because of various environmental problems, including climate change, land use change, stream intensification, non-point pollution, and untreated garbage. Moreover, horticultural sites which have various ecosystem services suffer highly absorbed heat from the heat island phenomenon associated with climate change. Therefore, we analyzed the heat island phenomenon occurring in an protected horticulture estimated area in Saemanguem, South Korea. Using an advanced measurement method, we examined the air temperature change derived from water channels as well as open spaces. The CFD analysis of coverage ratio 85% design showed wind speed of 2.09 m/s and temperature of $38.07^{\circ}C$. At a coverage ratio of 70%, the wind speed was improved to 2.61 m/s and the temperature was improved to $36.89^{\circ}C$. In Alternative 2 with wetlands and trees, the wind speed was 2.71 m/s and the temperature was $35.90^{\circ}C$. When the coverage ratio decreases to 55%, the wind speed increases showing 3.06 m/s and the temperature decreases showing $35.18^{\circ}C$.
