  • With the recent activation of the offshore wind power industry, there has been a development of power plants with a scale exceeding 400MW, comparable to traditional thermal power plants. Renewable energy, characterized by intermittency depending on the energy source, is a prominent feature of modern renewable power generation facilities, which are structured based on controllable inverter technology. As the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid expands, the grid codes for power system connection are progressively becoming more defined, leading to active discussions and evaluations in this area. In this paper, we propose a method for selecting optimal reactive power compensation capacity when multiple offshore wind farms are integrated and connected through a shared interconnection facility to comply with grid codes. Based on the requirements of the grid code, we analyze the reactive power compensation and excessive stability of the 400MW wind power generation site under development in the southwest sea of Jeonbuk. This analysis involves constructing a generation site database using PSS/E (Power System Simulation for Engineering), incorporating turbine layouts and cable data. The study calculates reactive power due to charging current in internal and external network cables and determines the reactive power compensation capacity at the interconnection point. Additionally, static and dynamic stability assessments are conducted by integrating with the power system database.

  • When distributed generation such as a wind power system is connected to the grid, it should meet grid requirements like IEEE Std. 1547, which regulates the anti-islanding method. Since the islanding may cause damage on electrical equipments or safety hazards for utility line worker, a distributed generation should detect it as soon as possible. This paper proposes a hybrid anti-islanding method coupled with the active and passive detection methods. To enhance the harmonic extraction capability for an active harmonic injection method, cascaded second-order band-pass filter and signal processing scheme are employed. Simulation and experiments are carried out under the islanding test condition specified in IEEE Std. 1547. Passive over/under voltage and over/under frequency methods are combined with the active method to improve the detection speed under certain condition. The simulation and experimental results are presented to verify that the proposed hybrid anti-islanding method can effectively detect the islanding.

  • Commonly used horizontal-axis wind turbines (HAWT) have the following structure: two or three blades, a nacelle which contains power converting equipments, generators, and a tower which supports the nacelle. The generated power is transmitted from the nacelle to the ground. Due to this structure, the power transmission lines are twisted when the nacelle is yawing. Thus, slip ring or additional yaw control mechanism is required. We propose a new structure of HAWT which is free of this transmission line problem. Moreover, the size of inverter can be reduced since two generators are connected in parallel in our mechanism so that power is distributed. A controller for yawing is developed so that it works in harmony with the controller for power generation. A MPPT (Maximum Power Point tracking) algorithm is implemented for the proposed system and efficiency of the system is validated by simulation.

  • Application of induction machines in wind turbine driven generators is a good alternative due to their good characteristics such as efficiency, reliability and low cost. Nevertheless, when isolated operation is required, the application of external capacitive bank, connected to the stator windings, to provide self-excitation results in a rather complex analysis. This paper presents an analysis of self-excited induction generator connected to a load either directly or by an intermediate of a power converter. At first a dynamic model of the induction generator accounting for magnetic saturation is developed. Then a number of balanced and unbalanced capacitors, passive and active loads are verified. Experimental results obtained from laboratory tests are compared to those simulated; the two are shown to be in good agreement.

  • The MPPT algorithm using neuro-fuzzy controller is proposed to improve the performance of fuzzy controller in this paper. The width of membership function and fuzzy rule have an effect on the performance of fuzzy controller. The neuro-fuzzy controller has the response characteristic which is superior to the existing fuzzy controller, because of using the optimal width of the fuzzy membership function through the neural learning. The superior control characteristic of a proposed algorithm is confirmed through simulation and experiment results.

  • As a new technical approach, an attempt was made to realize a photovoltaic system for an eco-environmental leisure ship by simultaneously actuating nine photovoltaic solar panels in association with the application of a sail-controlling system using wind energy. In this approach, the photovoltaic system consisted of a solar module, an inverter, a battery, and the relevant components, while the sail-controlling device was equipped with sail up/down and mast turning systems. The previously mentioned eco-environmental leisure ship utilizes a photovoltaic hybrid system that uses solar and wind energy as renewable energy sources. Furthermore, this research included a performance evaluation of the manufactured prototype, the acquisition of the purposed quantity values, and development of the purposed items. The significant items, including the sail up/down speed (seconds) and mast turning angle (degrees) were evaluated for a performance test. A wind direction sensitivity of 90% and maximum instant charging power of 900 W were also obtained in the process of the performance evaluation. In addition, the maximum sail time was also evaluated in order to acquire the optimum value. The performance evaluation showed that the prototype with a photovoltaic hybrid system was suitable for sailing an eco-environmental leisure ship using solar and wind energy.

  • A growing dynamic electrical demand has created an increasing interest in utilizing nonconventional energy sources like Photovoltaic (PV), wind power, etc. In this context, this paper focuses on the design and development of a composite power controller (CPC) in the decoupled double synchronous reference frame (DDSRF) combining the advantages of direct power control (DPC) and voltage oriented control (VOC) for a PV sourced grid connected inverter. In addition, a controller with the inherent active filter configuration is tested with nonlinear and unbalanced loads at the point of common coupling in both grid connected and autonomous modes of operation. Furthermore, the loss and reactive power compensation due to a non-fundamental component is also incorporated in the design, and the developed DDSRF model subsequently allows independent active and reactive power control. The proposed developed model of the controller is also implemented using MATLAB-Simulink-ISE and a Xilinx system generator which evaluate both the simulated and experimental setups. The simulation and experimental results confirm the validity of the developed model. Further, simulation results for the DPC are also presented and compared with the proposed CPC to further bring out the salient features of the proposed work.

  • This paper presents a simple AC-DC power conditioner for a squirell-cage induction generator(IG) operating under variable shaft speeds. The necessary reactive power for the IG system is supplied by means of a capacitor bank and a voltage-source PWM converter. Using a capacitor bank to transfer the reactive power to the IG under the rated speed and no-load conditions starts the IG operation and reduces the PWM power converter size. A simple control compensating for changes in the electrical loads as well as the variation in speed was developed to regulate the voltages of the IG system by controlling the rotor flux through its reactive and active currents control implementation. This proposed power conditioning scheme can be used efficiently as a wind power generation system where the output voltage of the IG is maintained constant voltage despite the variable frequency and the DC bus voltage of the PWM converter can be used for either DC applications such as battery charging or AC power applications with 60/50 Hz by connecting a stand alone inverter. The experimental and simulated operating performance results of a 5 kW IG scheme at various speeds and leads are presented.
