Characterization of Aerosol Concentration during Severe Asian Dust Period at Busan, Korea in 20 March 2010 (2010년 3월 20일 부산지역에 발생한 극심한 황사의 에어로솔 농도 분포 특성)

  • Asian dust (or yellow sand) occurring mainly in spring in East Asia is affected by the distribution of weather systems. This study was performed to investigate the characteristics of suspended particulate for Asian dust at Busan, Korea in 20 March 2010, which was one of the extreme case for the last 10 years. There was used the data of weather chart, satellite, automatic weather system (AWS), $PM_{10}$, laser particle counter (LPC), and backward trajectories model. In synoptically, the high pressure was located in the northwestern part and low pressure was located in the northeastern part of Korea. The strong westerly winds from surface to upper layer makes it possible to move air masses rapidly. Air masses passing through Gobi Desert in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia plateau covered the entire Korean peninsula. As the results of aerosol analysis, $PM_{10}$ concentration at Gudeok mountain in Busan was recorded $2,344{\mu}g/m^3$ in 2300 LST 20 March 2010 and their concentration was markedly increased at coarse mode particle. In surface condition, westerly wind about 3 ~ 5 m/s was dominant and small particles of $0.3{\sim}0.5{\mu}m$ were distributed on the whole. In heavy metal components analysis, the elements from the land was predominated.

  • A validation study is conducted for the conceptual design and performance analysis of UH-60A Black Hawk in order to establish the conceptual design and performance analysis techniques for conventional helicopters using a single main rotor and a tail rotor. As a tool for conceptual design and analysis, NDARC(NASA Design and Analysis of Rotorcraft) is used for the present study. The conceptual design for UH-60A is successfully validated as compared with the target values. Then, various performance analyses in hover and forward flight are conducted for the UH-60A model obtained from the present design work, and they are compared well with the wind tunnel test, flight test, and previous analyses using various analysis tools. Through this validation work, the conceptual design and performance analysis techniques for the conventional helicopter are appropriately established.

A Sensitivity Study of WRF Model Simulations to Nudging Methods for A Yeongdong Heavy Snowfall Event (영동 대설 사례를 대상으로 한 WRF Simulation의 Nudging 방법에 따른 민감도 연구)

  • To investigate the influences of the observational nudging and the analysis nudging on the WRF simulation for the heavy snowfall event in Yeongdong area on 26 February 2012, the sensitivity experiments in relation to nudging effects were conducted. We initially set the magnitude of nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ to apply to the analysis nudging experiments and observational experiments. To select the optimized options for the observational nudging, the radius influence experiment was carried out with radii ranging from 10 to 25 km at 5 km intervals. Among the observational nudging experiments, the experiment, which was conducted with the option of the radius influence of 15 km and that of the nudging coefficient of $6.0{\times}10^{-4}s^{-1}$ (ONG exp.), showed a best result. As giving the nudging effect only directly on D1 and D2 brought about a better result for the analysis nudging, we set the analysis nudging experiment as above (ANG exp.). We compared and analyzed the results from the control experiment, ONG experiment, and ANG experiment to reveal nudging effects. It was found that the control experiment brought about a result that it overestimated its precipitation in comparison with the observation and failed to properly simulate the time zone of rainfall concentration. When either of the two nudging (observational and analysis nudging) was applied to the data assimilation, it brought about a better result than the control experiment. Especially the observational nudging led to a meaningful result for the wind field, while the analysis nudging had the best result for the precipitation distribution among the experiments.

Numerical Simulation of Atmospheric Flow Fields Using Surface Observational Data in the Complex Coastal Regions (복잡한 해안지역에서의 지상 관측 자료를 이용한 대기 유동장 수치모의)

  • A critical component of air pollution modeling is the representation of meteorological fields within a model domain, since an accurate air quality simulation requires an accurate portrayal of the three-dimensional wind fields. The present study investigated data assimilation using surface observational data in the complex coastal regions to simulate an accurate meteorological fields. Surface observational data were categorized into three groups(Near coastal region, Far coastal regiln 1, Far costal region 2) by the locations where the data are. Experiments were designed and MM5 was used in each case of regions. Case 1 is an experiment without data assimilation, Case N is executed with data assimilation using observational data by meteorological stations and AWS data located in the near coastal region, within 1 km. Case F1 is also an experiment with data assimilation using observational data by meteorological stations and AWS data located in the far coastal regiln 1, more than 1km and less than 5km from the coastal lines. Case F2 is appled to data assimilation using observational data by meteorological stations and AWS data located in the far coastal region 2, beyond 5km from the coastal lines. The result of this study indicated that data assimilation using data in the far coastal region 1 and 2 provided an attractive method for generating accurate meteorological fields, especially in the complex coastal regions.

A study on 2-D wake flow control by acoustic excitation (음파 가진을 이용한 2차원 웨이크 유동 제어에 관한 연구)

  • In a low speed open-type wind tunnel, a group of parallel wakes downstream of two dimensional grid model consisting of several circular cylinders were experimentally investigated to study the response of the wake flows to the acoustic excitation, in hoping to promote the understanding of the underlying mechanism behind the gross flow change due to artificial excitation. In the unexcited wake flows, the development of the individual wakes behind cylinders was almost uniform for the ratio of the spacing to the cylinder diameter of s/d.geq.1.5. For smaller s/d, however, the jet streams issued through the gaps between the cylinders became biased in one side and the cylinders had wakes of different sizes. At s/d=1.25, the gap flow directions change in time, leading to unstable wake patterns. Further reduction in s/d made this unstable flip-flopping of the jets stable. The most effective excitation frequency was found to be in the Strouhal number range of St=0.5-0.6. This frequency was related to the vortex shedding. At s/d=1.75, the excitation frequency was 2 or 4 times the vortex shedding frequency. When the flow was excited at this frequency, the vortex sheddings were energized, and pairings between neighboring vortices were generated. Also, the merging process between individual wakes was accelerated. The unstable and unbalanced wake patterns at s/d=2.15 were made stable and balanced.   • Extra dosed bridge among the Cabled-stayed bridges have been increasingly built in korea in recently. But such bridges were often damaged by fire due to car collison. In this study Extra dosed bridges among the cabled-supported bridges are selected to analysis model frequently to be designed and/or constructed in recent and furture in this study. COSMOS FloWorks 2007 software are used for Heat Transfer Analysis and Thermal Stress Analysis. The safety of wire, HDPE pipe and stainless steel pipe are investigated. In the case of the constant of the temperature of the heat source, the significant three variables for the analysis are selected for study : (1) the distance between the fire-proof bulk head and the heat source, (2) wind velocity, (3) the height of the end of Stainless steel pipe.

Research on Arrangement Design for Sailing Yacht Winch using 3D Human Simulation (3D 휴먼 시뮬레이션을 통한 세일링 요트 윈치 배치 설계 연구)

  • Unlike other leisure boats, a sailing yacht is propelled by wind power using sails that are controlled by the crew. Therefore, the ergonomic design of the equipment that the crew has to operate for sailing might be very important. However, it is difficult to find design rules and regulations for the equipment arrangement of a sailing yacht based on ergonomics. In this study, the arrangement design for the height and side plate angle of a winch for a sailing yacht was examined from an ergonomic design point of view. In a simulation, a Korean male in his 20s was selected as a human model for a grinder. The physical load was analyzed when he was operating a winch using a 3D human simulation. The lower back load showed the highest value when using the grinder at $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$. Based on the results for the lower back load when using the grinder with various winch heights, it is suggested that the winch height from the cockpit floor to the top of the winch should be more than 40% of the height of the human operator. In addition, according to the results for the lower back load with various horizontal distances from the body, it is suggested that the side plate angle should be less than $16^{\circ}$.

INFRARED OBSERVATIONS OF DUST AROUND HELIUM NOVA V445 PUPPIS

  • We detected bright mid- to far-infrared emission from the helium nova V445 Puppis in the AKARI all-sky survey data taken in 2006. Assuming an optically thin condition, we decomposed the spectral energy distribution (SED) of V445 Puppis in October 2006 by model fitting and found that the SED can be explained by a combination of cold amorphous carbon (125 K and the mass of $4.5^{+6.6}_{-2.7}{\times}10^{-4}M_{\odot}$) and warm amorphous carbon (250 K and the mass of $1.8^{+1.0}_{-0.5}{\times}10^{-5}M_{\odot}$). Assuming that the former is pre-existing dust formed in the past nova outbursts and the latter is newly formed dust in December 2000's nova wind, this result suggests that the amount of dust formed around V445 Puppis in a single outburst is larger than $10^{-5}M_{\odot}$, which is larger than those in any other classical novae ever reported.

Assessment Framework for Multicriteria Comparison Indicators in Various Electricity Supply Systems (다양한 전력생산 시스템에서 다중기준 비교지표의 평가 체계)

  • In this study, on the basis of an analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method and through a questionnaire on subjective preference and importance, various power supply systems were comprehensively compared with multiple decision criteria such as environmental, social, healthy, and economic viewpoints and then overall priority was assessed. When a decision-making problem is modelled by a hierarchy structure, the AHP method is regarded as a useful tool for extracting subjective opinions via the aforementioned questionnaire. Here, the overall preferences were obtained by linearly aggregating weighting vector and preference matrix. The energy systems such as nuclear, coal, and LNG power plants were selected because they took share over 90% of domestic electricity supply in Korea. Furthermore, wind power and photovoltaic solar systems were included as representative renewable energy systems in Korea. According to the results of this demonstration study, the following comprehensive comparison indicators were yielded: 1) weighting factors for 4 types of main criteria as well as for 11 types of sub-criteria; 2) preference valuation for 7 types of energy systems under consideration; 3) overall score for each energy systems.

Experimental Study on the Static Stability of a Sounding Rocket Model in the Supersonic Wind Tunnel (과학로켓 모델의 정적 안정성에 대한 초음속풍동 실험연구)

  • In this work, experiments on hybrid sounding rocket were conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics and analyze longitudinal static stability. Tests were performed on 1/10 scale models of sounding rocket through Mach number ranging from 1.75 to 2.5 and for angle of attack from $0^{\circ}$ to $6^{\circ}$. Aerodynamic forces and moments were measured by means of a 4 component internal balance. With measured forces and moments, static stability characteristics of rocket were calculated. Tests were made for three models with different length to determine the effect of body length. The visualization of shock waves was carried out by Schlieren optical system to observe variations of shock waves with Mach number and angle of attack.
