  • The national wind map of South Korea has been established as a core data to support national strategy building and promotion of wind energy dissemination. The national wind map has been made by numerical wind simulation with the spatial resolution of 1 km horizontal, 10m vertical and temporal resolution of 1 hour interval for 5 years period (2003-2007). Therefore, an application system linked with the national wind map named KIER-WindMap$^{TM}$ is being developed to be used by the government, local government, developers and researchers. We introduce the current status of the application system and the future development plans.

  • In order to create a wind resource map, we need wind data, contour map and roughness map. Moving Filter technique was applied to Udo of Jeju Island to improve the accuracy and efficiency of creating roughness map based on the Land Cover Map of the Ministry of Environment. The Land Cover Map was simplified using moving filtering, and the roughness map was created with this Land Cover Map. The wind resource map was created using this roughness map. Finally, we verified the validity and application of moving filter technique for wind resource map. As a result, the wind map which was created using the roughness map with moving filtering showed bias values which were all negative. It means the wind map is underestimated to values of wind energy and RMSE values were also from 0.0237m/s to 0.0253m/s at 50m height. In other words, estimation of wind resource using image filtering provides reliable results at 80m height typically when the wind turbine is installed. Finally, we found that image filtering technique is very useful tool to make wind resource map.

  • In order to make sure the impact of spatial resolution of wind energy map on the estimation of wind power density in the Korean Peninsula, the comparison studies on the characteristics of wind energy map with three different spatial resolutions were carried out. Numerical model used in the establishment of wind map is MM5 (5th generation Mesoscale Model) with RBAPS (Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) as initial and boundary data. Analyzed Period are four months (March, August, October, and December), which are representative of four seasons. Since high spatial resolution of wind map make the undulation of topography be clear, wind pattern in high resolution wind map is correspond well with topography pattern and maximum value of wind speed is also increase. Indication of island and mountains in wind energy map depends on the its spatial resolution, so wind patterns in Heuksan island and Jiri mountains are clearly different in high and low resolutions. And area averaged power density can be changed by estimation method of wind speed for unit area in the numerical model and by treatment of air density. Therefore the studiable resolution for the topography should be evaluated and set before the estimation of wind resources in the Korean Peninsula.

  • The national goal of wind energy dissemination has to be determined rationally based on technically available wind resource potential. For an accurate and scientific estimation of wind resource potential, a wind map is requisite. This paper introduces the national wind map of Korea established by numerical wind simulation. Therefore, quantification of national wind resource potential is now possible and is anticipating to be used as a core index for policy and strategy building of wind energy dissemination and technology development.

  • We have established a wind map of Singapore, a city-state characterized its land cover by urban buildings to confirm a possibility of wind farm development. As a simple but useful approximation of urban canopy, a zero-plane displacement concept was employed. The territory is divided into 15 sectors having similar urban building layouts, and zero-plane displacement, equivalent roughness height at each sector was calculated to setup a terrain boundary condition. Annual mean wind speed and mean wind power density map were drawn by a CFD micrositing model, WindSim where Changi International Airport wind data was used as an in-situ measurement. Unfortunately, predicted wind power density does not exceed 80 $W/m^2$ at 50 m above ground level which would not sufficient for wind power generation. However, the established Singapore wind map is expected to be applied for wind environment assessment and urban planning purpose.

  • A low-resolution national wind map, which is a prerequisite for setting up the national dissemination target and strategy of wind energy development, has been established by numerical wind simulation using the synoptic wind map, developed at the first stage, as an upper boundary condition. Based on the wind map, Wind Resource Information System has been composed in order to support scientific and systematic wind resource assessment and analysis.

  • This study investigates the characteristics of surface wind in North Korea using mesoscale model WRF. Hourly wind fields were simulated for one year representing mean characteristics of an 11-years period from 1998 to 2008. The simulations were performed on a nested grid from 27 km to 1 km horizontal resolution. The simulated wind map at 10 m above ground level is verified with 27 surface observations. Statistical verification skill score indicates that wind speed tends to overestimate in surface layer. The average RMSE value of the simulated wind speed is around $2.8ms^{-1}$. Wind map in North Korea showed that strong wind speed is distributed in the mountainous and western coastal region. The results of this wind mapping study contribute for the founding of wind energy potential location.

  • This global case study pursues diversification and intensification for an application system of the national wind map which has been developed to support national strategy building and promotion of wind energy dissemination. We chose nine counties' national wind maps and compared their map area, extraction height, temporal and spatial resolution, download services, etc. to derive a best practice for the Korea wind map application system. Therefore, the application system are designed to offer high resolution height information of which covers wind turbine rotor sweeping area and time-series dataset which can be downloaded for further analysis by users. It is anticipated that the system would contribute greatly to wind energy policy, business and research sectors once the derived ideas have been implemented to the application system

  • In order to understand regional wind characteristics and to estimate offshore wind resources, a wind map of the Korean Peninsula was established using remote-sensing data from the satellite, U.S. NASA Quik SCAT which has been deployed for the Sea Winds Project since 1999. According to the linear regression result between the wind map data and in-situ marine-buoy data, the correlation factor was greatly improved up to 0.87 by blending the remote-sensing data of Quik SCAT with U.S. NCEP/NCAR CDAS reanalysis data to eliminate precipitation interference and to increase temporal resolution. It is found from the established wind map that the wind speed in winter is prominent temporally and the South Sea shows spatially high energy density over the wind class 6. The reason is deduced that the north-west winds through the Yellow Sea and the north-east winds through the East Sea derived by the low pressure developed in Japan are accelerated passing through the Korea Channel and formed high wind energy region in the South Sea; the same trends are confirmed from the statistical analysis of the meteorological observation data of KMA.
