This paper describes a simple method for evaluating the design wind loads for the structural frames of circular flat roofs with long spans. The dynamic response of several roof models were numerically analyzed in the time domain as well as in the frequency domain by using wind pressure data obtained from a wind tunnel experiment. The instantaneous displacement and bending moment of the roof were computed, and the maximum load effects were evaluated. The results indicate that the wind-induced oscillation of the roof is generally dominated by the first mode and the gust effect factor approach can be applied to the evaluation of the maximum load effects. That is, the design wind load can be represented by the time-averaged wind pressure multiplied by the gust effect factor for the first mode. Based on the experimental results for the first modal force, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor is provided as a function of the geometric and structural parameters of the roof and the turbulence intensity of the approach flow. The equivalent design pressure coefficients, which reproduce the maximum load effects, are also discussed. A simplified model of the pressure coefficient distribution is presented.

The pitch reducer consists of several planetary gearsets, and they should have good load distribution over gear tooth flank and load sharing among the planets to improve the durability. This work investigates how bearing internal clearances influence both the load distribution over the gear tooth flank and the planet load sharing. A whole system model is developed to analyze a pitch reducer. The model includes non-linear mesh stiffness of gears, non-linear stiffness of bearings. The results indicate that the face load factor and mesh load factor decrease, and the fatigue life of output shaft bearings increase as bearing internal clearances of output shaft decrease. Therefore, the internal clearance of output shaft bearing must be considered when designing the pitch reducer for wind turbines.
The main purpose of this study is to discuss the design wind loads for the structural frames of single-layer latticed domes with long spans. First, wind pressures are measured simultaneously at many points on dome models in a wind tunnel. Then, the dynamic response of several models is analyzed in the time domain, using the pressure data obtained from the wind tunnel experiment. The nodal displacements and the resultant member stresses are computed at each time step. The results indicate that the dome's dynamic response is generally dominated by such vibration modes that contribute to the static response significantly. Furthermore, the dynamic response is found to be almost quasi-static. Then, a series of quasi-static analyses, in which the inertia and damping terms are neglected, is made for a wide range of the dome's geometry. Based on the results, a discussion is made of the design wind load. It is found that a gust effect factor approach can be used for the load estimation. Finally, an empirical formula for the gust effect factor and a simple model of the pressure coefficient distribution are provided.
Aerodynamic force coefficients are generally prescribed by an ensemble average of ten and/or twenty 10-minute samples. However, this makes it difficult to identify the exact probability distribution and exceedance probability of the prescribed values. In this study, 12,600 10-minute samples on three tall buildings were measured, and the probability distributions were first identified and the aerodynamic force coefficients corresponding to the specific non-exceedance probabilities (cumulative probabilities) of wind load were then evaluated. It was found that the probability distributions of the mean and fluctuating aerodynamic force coefficients followed a normal distribution. The ratios of aerodynamic force coefficients corresponding to the specific non-exceedance probabilities (Cf,Non) to the ensemble average of 12,600 samples (Cf,Ens), which was defined as an adjusting factor (Cf,Non/Cf,Ens), were less than 2%. The effect of coefficient of variation of wind speed on the adjusting factor is larger than that of the annual non-exceedance probability of wind load. The non-exceedance probabilities of the aerodynamic force coefficient is between PC,nonex = 50% and 60% regardless of force components and aspect ratios. The adjusting factors from the Gumbel distribution were larger than those from the normal distribution.

This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuate wind velocity statistic properties in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with largest data samples (yearly 2003-2012). The basic wind speeds were standardized homogeneously to the surface roughness category C, and to 10m above the ground surface. The estimation of the extreme of non-Gaussian load effects for design applications has often been treated tacitly by invoking a conventional wind design (gust load peak factor) on the basis of Gaussian processes. This assumption breaks down when the loading processes exhibits non-Gaussianity, in which a conventional wind design yields relatively non conservative estimates because of failure to include long tail regions inherent to non-Gaussian processes. This study seeks to ascertain the probability distribution function from recently wind data with effected typhoon & maximum instantaneous wind speed.
Compared with traditional transmission towers, T-shaped angle towers have long cross-arms and are specially used for ultrahigh-voltage direct-current (UHVDC) transmission. Nevertheless, the wind loads of T-shaped towers have not received much attention in previous studies. Consequently, a series of wind tunnel tests on the T-shaped towers featuring cross-arms of varying lengths were conducted using the high-frequency force balance (HFFB) technique. The test results reveal that the T-shaped tower's drag coefficients nearly remain constant at different testing velocities, demonstrating that Reynolds number effects are negligible in the test range of 1.26 × 104-2.30 × 104. The maximum values of the longitudinal base shear and torsion of the T-shaped tower are reached at 15° and 25° of wind incidence, respectively. In the yaw angle, the crosswind coefficients of the tower body are quite small, whereas those of the cross-arms are significant, and as a result, the assumption in some load codes (such as ASCE 74-2020, IEC 60826-2017 and EN 50341-1:2012) that the resultant force direction is the same as the wind direction may be inappropriate for the cross-arm situation. The fitting formulas for the wind load-distribution factors of the tower body and cross-arms are developed, respectively, which would greatly facilitate the determination of the wind loads on T-shaped angle towers.

Because of the particularity and complexity of direct air-cooling structures (ACS), wind parameters given in the general load codes are not suitable for the wind-resistant design. In order to investigate the wind loads of ACS, two 1/150 scaled three-span models were designed and fabricated, corresponding to a rigid model and an aero-elastic model, and wind tunnel tests were then carried out. The model used for testing the wind pressure distribution of the ACS was defined as the rigid model in this paper, and the stiffness of which was higher than that of the aero-elastic model. By testing the rigid model, the wind pressure distribution of the ACS model was studied, the shape coefficients of "A" shaped frame and windbreak walls, and the gust factor of the windbreak walls were determined. Through testing the aero-elastic model, the wind-induced dynamic responses of the ACS model was studied, and the wind vibration coefficients of ACS were determined based on the experimental displacement responses. The factors including wind direction angle and rotation of fan were taken into account in this test. The results indicated that the influence of running fans could be ignored in the structural design of ACS, and the wind direction angle had a certain effect on the parameters. Moreover, the shielding effect of windbreak walls induced that wind loads of the "A" shaped frame were all suction. Subsequently, based on the design formula of wind loads in accordance with the Chinese load code, the corresponding parameters were presented as a reference for wind-resistant design and wind load calculation of air-cooling structures.
Non-stationary extreme winds such as thunderstorm downbursts are responsible for many structural damages. This research presents a time domain approach for estimating along-wind load effects on tall buildings using multiple wind speed time history samples, which are simulated from evolutionary power spectra density (EPSD) functions of non-stationary wind fluctuations using the method developed by the authors' earlier research. The influence of transient wind loads on various responses including time-varying mean, root-mean-square value and peak factor is also studied. Furthermore, a simplified model is proposed to describe the non-stationary wind fluctuation as a uniformly modulated process with a modulation function following the time-varying mean. Finally, the probabilistic extreme response and peak factor are quantified based on the up-crossing theory of non-stationary process. As compared to the time domain response analysis using limited samples of wind record, usually one sample, the analysis using multiple samples presented in this study will provide more statistical information of responses. The time domain simulation also facilitates consideration of nonlinearities of structural and wind load characteristics over previous frequency domain analysis.

IEC 61400-1 requires design lifetime of wind turbines at least 20 years, thus wind turbine should be assured for structural safety through load assessment. DLCs have been defined with respect to the load assessment in IEC 61400-1. In addition, if the extreme design values for DLC1.3 are equal or exceed the extreme design value for DLC1.1, DLC1.1 may be omitted. To omit DLC1.1, scale factor (c) will be increased in DLC1.3. However, this particular adjustment is not specified guidelines. Thus, this study was conducted. DLC1.1 was calculated for extrapolation of 50 years-extreme events using several probability distribution functions and fitting methods. And DLC1.3 was calculated for up to seven different values of scale factor (c) with $2{\leq}c{\leq}5$ in steps of 0.5. Finally, in this study, scale factor (c) that was the value of 4.51 was determined.
Roof is an integral part of building envelope. It protects occupants from environmental forces such as wind, rain, snow and others. Among those environmental forces, wind is a major factor that can cause structural roof damages. Roof due to wind actions can exhibit either flexible or rigid system responses. At present, a dynamic test procedure available is CSA A123.21-04 for the wind uplift resistance evaluation of flexible membrane-roofing systems and there is no dynamic test procedure available in North America for wind uplift resistance evaluation of rigid membrane-roofing system. In order to incorporate rigid membrane-roofing systems into the CSA A123.21-04 testing procedure, this paper presents the development of a load cycle. For this process, the present study compared the wind performance of rigid systems with the flexible systems. Analysis of the pressure time histories data using probability distribution function and power spectral density verified that these two roofs types exhibit different system responses under wind forces. Rain flow counting method was applied on the wind tunnel time histories data. Calculated wind load cycles were compared with the existing load cycle of CSA A123.21-04. With the input from the roof manufacturers and roofing associations, the developed load cycles had been generalized and extended to evaluate the ultimate wind uplift resistance capacity of rigid roofs. This new knowledge is integrated into the new edition of CSA A123.21-10 so that the standard can be used to evaluate wind uplift resistance capacity of membrane roofing systems.
