One of the world widely used methods in determining the intensity of a typhoon is Dvorak's technique. By applying the Dvorak's method to the typhoons which affected our country in various degress and extents without regard to their individual severity, we estimated their intensity for six different cases of typhoons. We have derived a regression equation of estimating the central pressures and maximum wind speeds for the six selected typhoons. Their intensity was estimated from the Dvork's method using GMS satellite image data. The derived equation has tested to typhoon ORCHID and the computed values have been compared with the direct observations in its central pressure and maximum wind speed. The computed values in the Dvork's method are smaller in their magnitudes than the observed corresponding values. But their relative magnitudes do not change so much at each different time step. But our results are significantly different from those of NOAA and JMA. The cause of differences are not investigated in depth in this analysis.

Assessment of image registration for Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) was performed. A 16 bit camera and LED lamp were used with Uni-FIB paint (ISSI). Because of model displacement and deformation at 'wind-on' condition, a large error of the intensity ratio was induced between 'wind-on' and' wind-off images. To correct the error, many kinds of image registrations were tested. At first, control points were marked on the model surface to find the coefficients of polynomial transform functions between the 'wind-off' 'wind-on' images. The 2nd-order polynomial function was sufficient for representing the model displacement and deformation. An automatic detection scheme was introduced to find the exact coordinates of the control points. The present automatic detection algorithm showed more accurate and user-friendly than the manual detection algorithm. Since the coordinates of transformed pixel were not integer, five interpolation methods were applied to get the exact pixel intensity after transforming the 'wind-on' image. Among these methods, the cubic convolution interpolation scheme gave the best result.
Wind tunnels tests have been evaluating wind load estimation by discussing the most important design elements in very tall buildings. Such tests have some uncertainties, however, with respect to the data of the reduced model and the calculated empirical values. In contrast, CFD analysis can simulate the actual scale and shorten the time of simulation. Nevertheless, the utilization of CFD analysis is negligible because of its low reliability. In this paper, the reliability of CFD analysis will be proven by comparing the results of a wind tunnel test and CFD analysis for the prototype models shown in previous studies. The effect of the turbulence intensity on the reliability is also presented.

In the present study, the wind characteristics were analyzed according to the time averages to evaluate the performance of small wind turbines required for the development of energy independent village. Measuring data of wind speed were recorded between January 2016 and April 2016 every second. Experimental data is averaged out using 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minute time steps. Throughout the experimental data analysis, 5 minutes averaged data is used to analyze the performance of the wind turbine, because it produces a minimum turbulence intensity in wind speed. The measuring power of the wind turbine is less than the designed value due to the unsteady nature wind of sudden changes in magnitude of wind speed and wind angle. Detailed wind conditions are also analysed using two variable Weibull probability density functions.

To investigate the building wind characteristics of skyscraper nearby areas, two points were selected and the wind speed and the wind direction data were measured using 2-D ultrasonic anemometer and propeller type wind monitor during the winter time. The study site is Dohgok-dong, Seoul. After measurement, wind data whose speed is equal to or more than Beaufort level five were selected, classified and analyzed in terms of direction, velocity level and hourly difference. The prevailing wind point is higher than street canyon in terms of intensity and frequency. The main direction is also different. This study aims to figure out the phenomena of building wind impact and also to provide essential basic data for establishing proper guidelines in building wind impact assessment for skyscrapers in Korea.

The long-term wind data are reconstructed from the short-term meteorological data to design the 4 MW offshore wind park which will be constructed at Woljeong-ri, Jeju island, Korea. Using two MCP (Measure-Correlate-Predict) models, the relative deviation of wind speed and direction from two neighboring reference weather stations can be regressed at each azimuth sector. The validation of the present method is checked about linear and matrix MCP models for the sets of measured data, and the characteristic wind turbulence is estimated from the ninety-percent percentile of standard deviation in the probability distribution. Using the Gumbel's model, the extreme wind speed of fifty-year return period is predicted by the reconstructed long-term data. The predicted results of this analysis concerning turbulence intensity and extreme wind speed are used for the calculation of fatigue life and extreme load in the design procedure of wind turbine structures at offshore wind farms.
A wind tunnel test of a scaled-down model and field measurement were effective methods for elucidating the aerodynamic behavior of a chimney under a wind load. Therefore, the relationship between the results of the wind tunnel test and the field measurement had to be determined. Accordingly, the set-up and testing method in the wind tunnel had to be modified from the field measurement to simulate the real behavior of a chimney under the wind flow with a larger Reynolds number. It enabled the results of the wind tunnel tests to be correlated with the field measurement. The model surface roughness and different turbulence intensity flows were added to the test. The simulated results of the wind tunnel test agreed with the full-scale measurements in the mean surface pressure distribution behavior.
In this paper, changes in the intensity (e.g., central pressure and maximum sustained wind speed) of Tropical Cyclone (TC) in summer in the regions located at $30^{\circ}N$ in East Asia from 1988 to 1991 were found. The intensity of TC from 1991 to 2007 was much higher than that of TC from 1965 to 1988. The reason for this was that the frequency of TCs passing China from 1991 to 2007 was much lower than that of TCs from 1965-1988 because a northeasterly wind caused by high-pressure circulation in East Asia got severer along the East Asian coast. Instead, TCs moved from the eastern region of the Tropical West Pacific to Korea and Japan mainly after passing the East China Sea due to the low-pressure circulation strengthened in the subtropical waters of East Asia. In addition, low Vertical Wind Shear (VWS) was created along the mid-latitude regions of East Asia and the main path of TCs from 1991 to 2007. Most of the regions in the Northwestern Pacific showed higher Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from 1991 to 2007, and had a good environment where TCs were able to maintain a higher intensity on the mid-latitude. In particular, a low sensible heat flux occurred due to high snow depth in East Asia in the spring of 1991 to 2007. Accordingly, the lower layer of East Asia showed high-pressure circulation, and the sea surrounding East Asia showed low-pressure circulation. Thus, the typical west-high, east-low pattern of winter atmospheric pressure was shown. The possibility of snowfall in East Asia in spring to be used as a factor for predicting the summer intensity of TC in the mid-latitude regions of East Asia was insinuated. The characteristics of TC in a low-latitude region were the same in Korea. The latest intensity of TCs got higher, and the landing location of TCs gradually changed from the west coast to the south coast.
A first step review is completed on the suitability of European designed wind turbines in an East Asia climate. Six parameters are chosen for detailed analysis of proper meteorological measures from flat, hilly, forested, coastal and offshore sites in West Europe and East Asia: mean wind speed, 10 minute mean wind speed distribution, turbulence intensity, wind shear, 3 second extreme wind speed and 10 minute direction change. All six parameters are assessed with a view for contrast with the wind turbine design standard IEC61400. The diurnal and seasonal variation, average and extreme values of each parameter are calculated where appropriate. Industry standard software and analysis techniques have been employed to assess the applicability of existing wind turbine design standards and design guidelines for the East Asian market.
Wind power generation of 5 MW wind turbine was predicted by using wind measurement data from HeMOSU-1 which is at south west coast of Korea. Time histories of turbulent wind was generated from 10-min mean wind speed and then they were used as input to Bladed to estimated electric power. Those estimated powers are used in both polynominal regression and neural network training. They were compared with each other for daily production and yearly production. Effect of mean wind speed and turbulence intensity were quantitatively analyzed and discussed. This technique further can be used to assess lifetime power of wind turbine.
