  • This study aimed at analyzing the sensitivity of ozone simulation in accordance with the meteorological nudging for a high nocturnal ozone episode. To demonstrate the effectiveness of nudging methods (e.g., nudging techniques and application domains), the following six experiments were designed: (1) control without nudging, (2) experiment with application of observation nudging to all domains (domain 1~4), and (3)~(6) experiments with application of grid nudging to domain 1, domain 1~2, domain 1~3 and all domains, respectively. As a result, the meteorological nudging had a direct (improvement of input data) and indirect (estimate natural emission) effect on ozone simulation. Nudging effects during the daytime were greater than those during the nighttime due to low accuracy of wind direction during the nighttime. On comparison of the nudging techniques, the experiments in which grid nudging was applied showed more improved results than the experiments in which observation nudging was applied. At this time point, the simulated concentrations were generally similar to the observed concentrations due to the increase in the nudging effect when grid nudging was applied up to the sub-domain. However, for high nocturnal ozone uptakes, the experiment in which grid nudging was applied do domain 1~3 showed better results than the other experiments. This is because, when grid nudging was applied to the high resolution domain (e.g., domain 4 with 1 km), the local characteristics were removed due to the smoothing effects of meteorological conditions.

  • The wave spectrum was generated from wave data measured at the Chagwi-do site in Jeju, where a 10MW class floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system will be installed. The latching control technology (Sheng et al.[2015]) was applied in order to improve the extracted power from WEC (Wave Energy Converter), which is heaving in corresponding irregular waves. The peak period as a representative value of irregular waves was used when we determined the latching duration. From the numerical results in the time-domain analysis, the latching control technology can significantly improve the extracted power about 50%.

  • Class A evaporation pan has been used throughout the world to measure free water evaporation mainly by manual observation once a day. In this study, a new automatic water level measurement method is used for understanding of free water evaporation and numerical analysis. This new technique measures the weight of buoyancy bar in water, and does not need calibration because it is not affected by water density change with water temperature. Field observations of evaporation were made near Haenam Meteorological Station over paddy field located in southwestern Korea from 20 April to 30 May 2004 and the data from ten clear days (16 - 25 May) were used for this analysis. The observed total evaporation was about 50.7mm during this period whereas the estimated from an empirical equation was 50.4mm. As expected, the pan evaporation is well correlated with wind speed and the vapor pressure deficit between the water surface and the air.

  • This paper presents results from steady wind tunnel test conducted on a $65^{\circ}$ delta wing at a root chord Reynolds number of $1.76{\times}10^6$. In these experiments, the wing was instrumented with 188 pressure taps, conjunction with powerful multi-channel data logging system, allowed the wing upper surface pressure distribution to be measured. Analysis indicates that the wing upper surface distribution can provide considerable insight into the comvined aerodynamic effects of angle of attack and sideslip on the wing. In a sideslip condition, the strength of the vortex on the windward side is much stronger than that of leeward side. This asymmetric pressure disstribution betwwen each side of wings result in a negative value of rolling moment. However, at a certatin range of angle of attck and sideslip angle(${\alpha}$=$24^{\circ}{\sim}36^{\circ}C$, ${\beta}$=$-5^{\circ}{\sim}-15^{\circ}C$) abrupt change of sign of rolling monent, rolling monent reversal, was observed.

  • A new steady approach has been developed to predict the transonic buffet onset of a high speed aircraft. In this paper, the flow is assumed to be steady for the buffet onset. The present study involves the analysis of a distinct change in the variation of various static aerodynamic parameters. These distinct changes indicates the onset of transonic buffet. Among the various aerodynamic parameters considered in this study, the variation in the center of pressure has shown to provide a clearest indicator of transonic buffet onset. This new steady approach can be applied to predict the transonic buffet onset for airfoils with shock induced separation bubble and for large swept wings with small aspect ratios. Good agreements have been obtained compared with unsteady wind tunnel buffet test data. Based on the results obtained the new steady approach, it can be newly suggested that the distinct slope changes of the center of pressure curve can be used as an indicator of buffet onset for the steady experimental method on a full aircraft configuration.

  • EOF analysis of tidal residual derived from 2003~2009 tide data was used to identify the spatio-temporal variability. The effect of sea surface air pressures and winds on the tidal residual was also investigated by the correlation analysis. The first mode accounting for 68 % of the total variance represented concurrent sea level rise or fall, and the second mode accounting for 21 % of the total variance explained alternative sea level rise and fall between West Sea coast and both South Sea and East Sea coasts. While northerly and southerly winds dominated the tidal residual in the eastern coast of Yellow Sea, the effect of sea surface air pressures on the tidal residual increased along the coastal regions from South Sea to East Sea.

  • The standards of ventilation system for bi-directional tunnel have not been established now. For this reason, with regard to the bi-directional tunnel below 1km, some problems have been appeared in ventilation capacity designing and in determining whether the mechanical ventilation system is needed or not for each case. In this study, we examine the characteristics of natural ventilations, analyze ongoing ventilation design cases for bi-directional tunnels and classify those cases into two groups. This study is carried out about the capability of using natural ventilating system by calculation of reasonable ventilation capacity in bi-directional tunnel and review of relationship between natural wind speed ($Vr^*$) and required speed(Vreq). This paper aims at providing a basis data for bi-directional tunnel ventilation design standards.

  • Gyeongju, which was the central city of the ancient civilization at Silla Kingdom, has various kinds of stone cultural properties. It is significantly important to preserve historical sources of Korea. However, recent air quality data measured in Gyeongju did not show good air quality level. In order to investigate variation of the concentration of the air pollutants with meteorological condition, an air quality monitoring and an aerosol sampling were conducted during the intensive monitoring period in Gyeongju. Impacts of the meteorological factors on the air pollutants were also analyzed based on the air mass pathway categories using HYSPLIT model and the local wind patterns using MM5 model. The prevailing air mass pathways were classified into four categories as following; category I affected by easterly marine aerosols, category II affected by northwesterly continental aerosols, category III affected by southwesterly continental aerosols, and category IV affected by northerly continental aerosols. The concentrations of the air quality standards were relatively lower during the fall intensive monitoring period. At that time, the easterly marine air mass pattern was dominated. The seasonal average mass concentration of $PM_{10,Opt}$, which optically measured at the monitoring site, was the highest value of $77.6{\pm}28.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the spring intensive monitoring period but the lowest value of $20.1{\pm}5.3\;{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$ during the fall intensive monitoring period. The concentrations of $SO_2$ and CO were relatively higher when the air mass came from the northwestern continent or the northern continent. The concentrations of ${SO_4}^{2-}$ and ${NO_3}^-$ increased under the northwesterly continental condition. It was estimated that the acidic aerosols were dominated in the atmosphere of Gyeongju when the air mass came from the continental regions.

  • We determined Asian dust days by constructing the standard of Asian dust using PM$_{10}$ concentrations ($\geq$150 $\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , 24-hr average) and TOMS aerosol index ($\geq$0.7) for 5 years (1998-2002), and grouped Into long-lasted cases (LLCs, $\geq$4 days) and short-lasted cases (SLCs, $\leq$2 days) concerning the mean lasting time (about 3 days) of Asian dust. Further we performed the specific analyses associated with concentration variations and synoptic conditions by using PM$_{10}$ and TOMS data, weather maps during the dusty cases (LLCs and SLCs). As a result, the LLCs (9 cates) had large variations of PM$_{10}$ concentration as the mean of 131.1$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ and the maximum mean of 379.8$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , and showed dominant features the continuous passage of deep trough caused by blocking effect and weak trough (56%, 5 cases) over Korea. The SLCs (11 cases) had relatively small variations of PM$_{10}$ concentration as the mean of 133.3$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ and the maximum mean of 247.2$\mu\textrm{g}$m$^{-3}$ , and showed passage of one weak trough (64%, 7 cases) over Korea. Thereafter, the case studies (April 7-13, 2002 of LLC and March 23-24, 2000 of SLC) performed by the simulation of MM5 with meteorological variables of the horizontal wind, potential temperature, isentropic potential vorticity, and helped to better understand the features of synoptic conditions in connection with the concentration variations for each case.

  • The response of sea levels to a typhoon in the north Japanese coast in the Japan Sea is investigated by using hourly ses level data($1966{\sim}1986$) and a numerical shallow water model with high resolution($5'{\times}5'$). The observed sea level analysis shows (1) progressive waves exist between Simonoseki(SS) and Maizuru(MZ) with the mean phase speed of about 4 m/s during the passage of the typhoon, (2) the phase speed between Sasebo(SB) and HK(Hakata) is slower(about 1.7 m/s), and (3) the maximum sea level at HK is achieved about 0.5 day later than that of SS. In many aspects, the numerical model results correspond well to the above observed features. In the model the progressive waves are identified as a topographic wave with the phase speed of about 4 m/s. Before the typhoon passes through the Korea Strait/ the Tsushima Strait, the wave propagations along the Japanese coast are significantly influenced by the southwestward coastal jet induced by the wind stress parallel to the coast. The waves start to propagate northeastward along the coast when the coastal jet is weakened.
