  • Mowat-Wilson syndrome is an extremely rare genetic disease that is characterized by intellectual disability, facial dysmorphism, Hirschsprung's disease, and other congenital anomalies. This disorder is caused by heterozygous mutations or deletions in the zinc finger E-box-binding homeobox-2 gene (ZEB2). Thus far, approximately 200 cases of Mowat-Wilson syndrome have been reported worldwide. In Korea, only one case with a 2q22 deletion, which also affects ZEB2, has been previously reported. Here, we describe a patient with Mowat-Wilson syndrome who presented with developmental delays, typical facial dysmorphism, and Hirschsprung's disease. Molecular analysis of ZEB2 identified a novel heterozygous mutation at c.190dup ($p.S64Kfs^*6$). To our knowledge, this is the second report of a Korean patient with Mowat-Wilson syndrome that has been confirmed genetically.

  • The flash points and the fire points for the m-xylene+n-propionic acid and n-butanol+n-pentanol systems were measured by using Tag open-cup apparatus(AS1M D 1310-86). The experimental flash points of two binary systems were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, Van Laar equation and Wilson equation. The calculated values based on the Raoult's law on m-xylene+n-propionic acid system were found to be better than those based on Van Laar and Wilson equations. The calculated values based on Van Laar equation on n-butanol+n-pentanol system were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law and Wilson equation. The the fire points for the m-xylene+n-propionic acid system were about $7{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ above the flash points. In the case of n-butanol+n-pentanol system, the flash points and the fire points had been found to be identical.

  • 107P/(4015) Wilson-Harrington is one of possible candidates of the dormant or inactive comet nuclei. It was discovered on a photographic plate exposed with the 48-inch Schmidt at Palomar Observatory on 1949 November 19 UT, displaying the faint extended cometary tail. No comet activity has not been after 1949 apparition. Here we present the optical observations of 107P/(4015) Wilson - Harrington during 2009/2010 apparition taken in search of low-level comet activity. Our photometric and spectroscopic data were collected 28 - 86 days after the perihelion passage on 2009 October 22 in a wide range of solar phase angle of 39-68 degree. A disk-integrated phase function was constructed, giving a geometric albedo of 0.055+/-0.012, phase integral of q=0.34, and Bond albedo of A_B=0.019. The photometric property shows profile similar to low albedo asteroids and comet nuclei. Any emission lines were found in our spectrum, giving a flat reflectance similar to low albedo asteroids. Although we could not find any evidence for the comet activity in our photometric and spectroscopic data, we found an upper limit of the fractional active area of 0.001%. We derived the upper limit of the optical depth of the dust trail and tail 7x10^{-10}. We conclude that 107P/(4015)Wilson-Harrington became completely dormant or inactive in 2009/2010 return.

  • Wilson's disease is an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by degenerative changes in the brain, liver, and cornea. Treatment includes D-penicillamine, trientine, and zinc sulfate. D-penicillamine has been used frequently as first line therapy for Wilson's disease. However, nephrotoxicity can occur after D-penlcillamlne treatment. Among them membranous glomerulopathy is the most common histological abnormality but minimal change lesions have also been reported. Nephrotic syndrome is a late complication of D-penicillamine treatment but very rarely can occur within 2 months after treatment of D-penicillamine. We report the early development of minimal change nephrotic syn, frome in a 3-year-old'girl with Wilson's disease 3 weeks after initiation of D-penicillamine.

  • Wilson's disease is an autosomal recessive disorder of copper metabolism consequence of which leads to accumulation of copper in the liver, brain, cornea and other tissues. The manifestations are more likely to be hepatic in the early childhood and neurological in the adolescents. In addition, the abnormalities that develop during disease progression may result in other manifestations such as hematologic, endocrine, or renal findings. We report a thirteen year-old girl who manifested tetany shortly after the initial diagnosis of Wilson's disease. Despite aggressive calcium, magnesium and vitamin D replacement, the hypocalcemia and hypomagnesemia did not respond to the therapy promptly. It took more than three weeks for blood levels of the minerals to be normal. We concluded that tetany occurred in our patient because of hypoparathyroidism as a rare complication of Wilson disease, vitamin D deficiency resulting from various conditions, and inconclusive hypomagnesemia.

  • The A-X (0-0) band of CS, which appears in high dispersion IUE spectra of comets Halley (1982i) and Wilson (19861), has been investigated in detail. We developed models, which include fluorescence and collisional processes We found that in order to account for the observed emission band precisely, IUE tracking errors should be included in line shape calculations it has been found that rotational excitation by electrons is a dominant process in determining populations of rotational ground states. We derived an electron density of $2.0\times10^4/cm^3$ at several thousand kilometers from the comet Wilson's nucleus by examining collisional influence on the CS band structure. We presented a band model for the 0-0 band of $C^{34}S$ and discussed the detectability of $^{34}S$ spectroscopically.

  • The applicability of the ultrafiltration process for color removal from dye-containing water has been examined in this study. The optimization of major process variables, such as dye concentration, chitosan concentration and transmembrane pressure on permeate flux and color removal efficiency was investigated. To find the most appropriate results for the experiment, the Box-Wilson experimental design method was employed. The results were correlated by a response function and the coefficients were determined by regression analysis. Permeate flux variation and color removal efficiency determined from the response functions were in good agreement with the experimental results. The optimum conditions of chitosan concentration, dye concentration and pressure were 50 mg/l, 50 mg/l and 3 bars, respectively for the highest permeate flux. On the other hand, optimum conditions for color removal efficiency were determined as 50 mg/l of dye concentration, 50 mg/l of chitosan concentration and 1 bar of pressure.

  • Plate and shell heat exchanger(P&SHE) is widely applied as evaporators or condensers in the refrigeration and air conditioning systems for their high efficiency and compactness. In order to set up the database for the design of the P&SHE, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for single phase flow of water in a plate & shell heat exchanger are experimentally investigated in this study. Single phase heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent water flow in a plate and shell heat exchangers by Wilson plot method. The shell side heat transfer resistance was varied and the overall heat transfer coefficients were measured. The single-phase heat transfer coefficients in a plate side were obtained by Wilson plot method. Single-phase heat transfer correlations based on projected heat transfer area and friction factor correlations have been proposed for single phase flow in a plate and shell heat exchanger.

  • The lower flash points for the binary system, n-butanol+n-decane, were measured by Pensky-Martens closed cup tester. The experimental results showed the minimum in the flash point versus composition curve. The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the reduced model under an ideal solution assumption and the flash point-prediction models based on the Van Laar and Wilson equations. The predictive curve based upon the reduced model deviated form the experimental data for this system. The experimental results were in good agreement with the predictive curves, which use the Van Laar and Wilson equations to estimate activity coefficients. However, the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the Willson equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than that of the flash point prediction model based on the Van Laar equation.
