Objective: Pigment production and distribution are controlled through multiple proteins, resulting in different coat color phenotypes of sheep. Methods: The expression distribution of vimentin (VIM) and transthyretin (TTR) in white and black sheep skins was detected by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization tandem MS (LC-ESI-MS/MS), gene ontology (GO) statistics, immunohistochemistry, Western blot, and quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) to evaluate their role in the coat color formation of sheep. Results: LC-ESI-MS/MS results showed VIM and TTR proteins in white and black skin tissues of sheep. Meanwhile, GO functional annotation analysis suggested that VIM and TTR proteins were mainly concentrated in cellular components and biological process, respectively. Further research confirmed that VIM and TTR proteins were expressed at significantly higher levels in black sheep skins than in white sheep skins by Western blot, respectively. Immunohistochemistry notably detected VIM and TTR in hair follicle, dermal papilla, and outer root sheath of white and black sheep skins. qRT-PCR results also revealed that the expression of VIM and TTR mRNAs was higher in black sheep skins than in white sheep skins. Conclusion: The expression of VIM and TTR were higher in black sheep skins than in white sheep skins and the transcription and translation were unanimous in this study. VIM and TTR proteins were expressed in hair follicles of white and black sheep skins. These results suggested that VIM and TTR were involved in the coat color formation of sheep.
In this study, we have investigated a process of preparation of white and black pigment particles by physical or chemical coating with functionalized polymers for the flexible low-cost paper-like display. This polymer coating provided <1 ${\mu}m$ monodispersed particles changed their dispersion, density, optical and electrical properties.
A 12-year-old spayed female Cocker Spaniel was presented with vomiting, diarrhea, depression, and hyporexia of 3-day duration. Microscopic examination of the abdominal fluid from a dog showed basophilic, amorphous to fibrillar materials without bile pigments or crystals. Total bilirubin concentration of the fluid was 19 times higher than the serum bilirubin concentration and exploratory laparotomy revealed a ruptured gallbladder and mucoceles in the abdominal cavity. Rupture of gallbladder mucoceles may cause atypical bile peritonitis in which mucinous material is observed instead of bile pigment.
Outdoor sculptures of modern art works are being damaged and deteriorated as they are exposed to the outdoor environment due to the nature of exhibition in the outdoor environment, but secure of basic data through the measures for conservation and advanced researches still remain in the early stage. The surface of "Conversion" which is exhibited in the Busan Cheonmasan Sculpture Park has been exfoliated and deteriorated due to outdoor exhibition for a long time, so systematic conservation and management of works are considered necessary. Prior to the conservation and management, this study conducted observation of cross section, analysis of inorganic components, FT-IR, Raman and Py-GC/Mass analysis to examine the nature and type of paints used for the work through a scientific analysis. As a result of analysis, paints used for the "Conversion" include paint mixed with silvery aluminium powder and white pigment, reddish paint mixed with toluidine red, bluish paint that mixed prussian blue and titanium white and mixture of phthalocyanine blue and titanium white. The result is expected to be used as basic data for selecting materials necessary for conservative treatment of and establishing a plan for conservative treatment of the "Conversion".
For the purpose researching to the influence of tetrahedral and octahedral preference of cations of $Ni^{2+}$, $Ti^{4+}$ upon the formation and the color development of the $ZnO-SnO_2$ spinel containing $Ni^{2+}$ and $Ti^{4+}$ ions, the gradual substitution of $Ni^{2+}$ ions for $Zn^{2+}$ ions and of $Ti^{4+}$ ions for $Sn^{4+}$ ions of the spinel in NiO-ZnO-$SnO_2$-$TiO_2$ system was carried out. On samples prepared by calcining the oxide and basic cabonate mixtures at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, the X-ray analysis, measurement of reflectance and the test of their stabilaity as a glaze pigment were also carried out. The results are summarized as follows 1) Single spinel was formed completely to x=1 in the $xNiO\cdot(2-x)ZnO\cdot{SnO}_2$system, and gave brilliant lightgreen hue. Moreover, $NiO\cdot{ZnO}\cdot{SnO}_2$ formed easily spinel than $NiO\cdot{MgO}\cdot{SnO}_2$ because Zn^{2+}$ ions had more strong tetrahedral preference than $Mg^{2+}$ ions. 2) As the gradual substitution of $Ti^{4+}$ ions for $Sn^{4+}$ ions in $NiO\cdot{MgO}\cdot{SnO}_2$ system, the spinels formed well and was nearly not changed in the hue. 3) The results of glaze test. (1) As the gradual substitution of $Ni^{2+}$ ions for $Zn^{2+}$ ions, the color changed from dull white to graish broun gradually in calcium-zinc glaze and calcium glaze, and from white to beige in tile glaze. (2) As the gradual substitution of $Ti^{4+}$ ions for $Sn^{4+}$ ions in $NiO-ZnO-SnO_2-TiO_2$ system, the color was become dull generally and was not change in tile glaze.
This study attempted to clarify the difference in eggshell pigmentation between blue-shelled ducks (BSD) and whiteshelled ducks (WSD). The eggshell pigmentation deposition process is discussed. Ultraviolet spectro-photometer and HPLC were used to determine the biliverdin concentration in the shell gland, uterus liquid and eggshell at 6, 12, 18, 20, 23.5 h post-oviposition. The biliverdin concentration in the eggshell and uterus fluid showed significant differences between BSD and WSD, but not in the shell gland. The heme oxygenase activity in the shell gland of both kinds of ducks remained mostly constant during the ovulatory cycle with no variation. The assay of exogenous biliverdin injection into the shell gland antrum in the WSD indicated that exogenous biliverdin could be deposited continuously into the eggshell until the source was exhausted. A layer-by-layer dissolution assay was used to examine the eggshell pigment deposition process. The biliverdin concentration in the first to sixth layers of the eggshell in the BSD was significantly higher than that in the white-shelled counterpart. The blue pigment concentration increased persistently from the 6th layer to the $1^{st}$ layer. The BSD eggshells did not accumulate a large quantity of biliverdin in the most external layer. They tended to increase the deposition layer by layer. Our results demonstrated that different BSD and WSD eggshell colors were influenced by the amount of biliverdin in the uterus fluid and not determined by the amount of biliverdin in the shell gland. This implies the existence of a mechanism that controls biliverdin transportation from the shell gland into the uterus fluid, thereby playing a key role in regulating duck eggshell color.

Histological study of normal and albinic catfish Silurus asotus produced in aquaculture has been carried out on organs such as the eye, the barbel, the dorsal fin, and the skin (including dorsal, ventral and lateral regions). Although individuals have no differences in morphological appearance, their colors showed clear difference as follows: the normal catfishes were black overall, but the albinic ones have a yellowish-white color over the whole body, red eyes and white barbels. All the organs investigated were fundamentally very similar in structure. Regarding the distribution and density of the melanin pigments, however, the albinic catfish have no melanin in the skin and eye, particularly in the basement membrane of the epidermis and the pigment epithelial layer in the retina, while the normal catfish have lots of melanin. This phenomenon may coincide with the so-called $i^1/i^1$ type of oculocutaneous albinism.
Nanosized rutile titanium dioxide (TiO2) is used in inorganic pigments and cosmetics because of its high whiteness and duality. The high quality of the white pigments depends on their surface coating technique via the solgel process. SiO2 coatings are required to improve the dispersibility, UV-blocking, and whiteness of TiO2. Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) is an important coating precursor owing to its ability to control various thicknesses and densities. In addition, we use Na2SiO3 (sodium silicate) as a precursor because of its low cost. Compared to TEOS, which controls the pH using a basic catalyst, Na2SiO3 controls the pH using an acid catalyst, giving a uniform coating. The coating thickness of TiO2 is controlled using a surface modifier, cetrimonium bromide, which is used in various applications. The shape and thickness of the nanosized coating layer on TiO2 are analyzed using transmission electron microscopy, and the SiO2 nanoparticle behavior in terms of the before-and-after size distribution is measured using a particle size analyzer. The color measurements of the SiO2 pigment are performed using UV-visible spectroscopy.
We investigated characteristics of the coloring material of Dancheong pigments and hope that this study contributes the revival of traditional Dancheong pigments color. For this purpose, we collected Dancheong fragment samples that fell off naturally from old wooden buildings in Gwangju and Jeonnam and analyzed the natural coloring material by XRD and EDS-SEM analysis method. In white pigments of Dancheong fragments, it is confirmed that gypsum$(CaSO_{4}{\cdot}2H_{2}O)$, quartz$(SiO_{2})$, white lead$(PbCO_{3})$ and calcite$(CaCO_{3})$ which have been used for white pigments since ancient times and $TiO_{2}$ which is common used in modern times. In red pigments of Dancheong fragments, it is confirmed that hematite$(Fe_{2}O_{3})$ and red lead$(Pb_{3}O_{4})$, which have been used for red pigments since ancient times and C.I. pigment orange $13(C_{32}H_{24}C_{12}N_{8}O_{2})$ but there is no cinnabar(HgS) which has been used since B.C. 3000 in China. In yellow pigments of Dancheong fragments, it is confirmed that crocoite$(PbCrO_{4})$ and massicot(PbO). In blue pigments of Dancheong fragments, it is confirmed that sodalite$(Na_{4}BeAlSi_{4}O_{12}Cl)$ and nosean $(Na_{8}Al_{6}Si_{6}O_{24}SO_{4})$ as coloring material of blue pigment and C.I. pigments blue $29(Na_{7}Al_{6}Si_{6}O_{24}S_{3})$ which is used in modern times. In green pigments of Dancheong fragments, it is confirmed that calumetite$(Cu(OHCI)_{2}{\cdot}2H_{2}O)$, escolaite(Cr2O3), dichromium trioxide$(Cr_{2}O_{3})$, emerald green$(C_{2}H_{3}As_{3}Cu_{2}O_{8})$, and C.I. pigments green$(C_{32}H_{16}-XCl_{x}Cu_{8})$ which is used in modern time. In black pigments of Dancheong fragments, Chiness ink(carbon black) is confirmed.
