This study was conducted to examine the yield of lotus leaves and roots per one native white lotus grown in Hoesan, Muan of Jeonnam districts, which were promoted by Muan-Gun, Jeonnam as a local speciality. We planted the rhizomes with 2 internodes in a rubber pot in the middle of April. Then on September, 24, 2008, we dug out the main rhizomes and it had grown by 810cm. From the data, the leaf area was $34,442\;cm^2$, the fresh leaf weight was 1,230g, and the dry leaf weight was 235.4g. The weight of the edible fresh stalk and dry weight leaf were 1,325g and 164.3g. Yield of the white lotus root were 1,480g on Sept. 4, 3,880g on Sept. 20 and 4,172g on Oct. 18. Native white lotus are able to be harvested early as September, however, it is be better that it is harvested in the middle of October based on the yield.
To get basic data for the utilization of white and red lotus as a raw material in functional food, chemical components of its leaf and root were investigated. Leaf had the highest level of nitrogen free extract and root had the highest level of moisture. The mineral analysis showed K(380.44~1,516.34 mg/100g), Ca(36.67~1,323.92 mg/100g), P(84.02~473.13 mg/100g) and Na(57.73~304.07 mg/100g). The rich free sugars in white and red lotus were glucose(161.12~765.15 mg/100g) and frutose (100.57~901.12 mg/100g). Total amino acid contents in leaf and root of white lotus and leaf and root of red lotus were 6,385.57, 1,162.93, 6,003.01 and 1,242.20 mg/100g, respectively. Although the free amino acid compositions of white and red lotus were different, their major free amino acids were glutamic acid, phenylalanine arginine and tyrosine. The ascorbic acid were 248.65 and 20.99 mg/100g in leaf and root of white lotus, 156.92 and 9.32 mg/100g in leaf and root of red lotus. The leaf of white lotus exhibited the highest total phenolic contents at 24.33 mg/g.
A terget leaf spot of red and white clovers was observed during 1998-2000 growing seasons in several fields of Chungnam and Chungbuk provinces in Korea. Lesions were circular to oval in outline, brown to dark brown, ranging from a pinpoint to 3-4 mm in diameter, often concentrically zonate and presenting a target effect. A fungus associated with the disease was identified as Stemphylium sarciniforme based on the morphological characteristics of the conidiophores and conidia. The fungus was pathogenic on red and white clovers in the inoculation test. This is the first record of a terget leaf spot of red and white clovers in Korea.
Disease incidence of Codonopsis lanceolata was surveyed at the major cultivating fields in Chonbuk province in 1996 to 1997. The main diseases of Codonopsis lanceolata were ovserved as leaf spot caused by Septoria codonopsis, anthracnose by Glomerella cingulata, brown leaf spot by Cercospora sp., rust by Coleosporium koreanum, powdery mildew by Erysiphe sp., Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxyporum, and white root rot by Sclerotium rolfsii. Anthracnose, leaf spot and brown leaf spot occurred severely on leaves from early July to late August. They were caused early fallen leaves. Fusarium wilt and white root rot occurred severely on stem and below the soil line in late August. They resulted in withering to death or chlorosis and fallen of leaves. Disease incidence of Codonopsis lanceolata was also substantially different in occurrence with a method of cultivation in late growth stage. Fusarium wilt and white root rot were more severe with a method of no support cultivation than those with a method of support cultivation with a stick. Fusarium wilt occurred 48.8% in a method of no support cultivation but 3.1% in a method of support cultivation with a stick. And white root rot occurred 18.9% in a method of no support cultivation but 0.3% in a method of no support cultivation with a stick. Thus, it proved that soil-borne diseases could be controlled support cultivation with a stick.
White clover (Trifolium repens L) gives rise to either weak persistence or overdominance in the pastures. To get information on grazing method to surmount the problem, the experiment was done to measure the effect of infrequent, frequent and their alternations on harvest yield and morphological characteristics of the clover. Individual plants of Regal, Louisiana S-l, Grasslands Huia, and Aberystwyth S184 were grown in 22cm plastic pot containing a 2: 1: 1 soil: sand: Peat moss mixture for 27 days after transplanting 50-day seedlings raised on 3cm pots, and then their all fully expanded leaves are trimmed. Defoliation treatments were forced every 1 (CC, frequent), 4 week(RR,infrequent) or their alternations(CR, RC) after 8 weeks from the trimming. To analyze the treatment effects, plants were sampled on 4, 8, 12, and 16 weeks after the trimming. Harvest yield of infrequent defoliation (RR) was higher than that of frequent defoliation (CC). Leaf area and no. of leaves per plant, petiole length and stolon length per plant, moreover, showed the similar result to the yield but stolon length and leaf area per g were reverse. The alternation of infre-quent and then frequent defoliation (RC) had greater yield than that of their reverse (CR) although both alternations showed intermediate ones compared to CC and RR. Morphological characteristics, furthermore, related to the clover leaf were immediately changed by alternations of defoliation inter-val(RC and CR) while those done to the stolon were lasted longer thereafter(RC and CR). Harvest yields in RC and CR were positively correlated to leaf area and no. of leaves or stolon length per plant but negatively done to leaf area and stolon length per g. It is concluded that weak persistence or overdominance of white clover in pasture can be controlled by alternation of infrequent and then frequent defoliation or reverse.

A new leaf variegated cultvar 'White Edge' was developed by ethyle methane sulfonate(EMS) treatment on seed of Hosta minor. Among induced leaf variegated plant, some with white color on the edge of the leaves was selected. They were cultivated via vegetative propagation. 'White Edge' was finally selected through the test of characteristics from 2003 to 2005. Assessment of botanical characteristics was conducted for three years. The major characteristic of these cultivar is that they maintain uniformly all year round. 'White Edge'(Grant No.1880) was registered to the Korea Seed and Variety Service(KSVS) for commercialization in 2007. These cultivar are useful as materials for pot or as ground cover plants.

Using maize green- and white-leaf tissue, we have examined the effect of various chemicals on cytoplasmic leakage with respect to the light requirement or chloroplast targeting for their activities. Oxyfluorfen, oxadiazon, diuron, and paraquat, which are known as representative herbicides acting on plant chloroplasts, caused the electrolyte leakage only in the green tissues, whereas 2, 4-dinitrophenol, rose bengal (singlet oxygen producing chemical) and methyl-jasmoante (senscence-stimulating chemical) play a role both in green- and white-tissue. Benzoyl(a) pyrene, generating superoxide radical upon light illumination, functions only in white tissues. Tralkoxydim, metsulfuron-methyl and norflurazon showed no effect in two tested plant samples. In terms of light requirement in electrolyte leakage activity, diuron, oxyfluorfen, oxadiazon, rose bengal, and benzoyl(a) pyrene absolutely require the light for their functions, but other chemicals did not. based on these results, we could classify into four different response types according to whether chemicals require light or chlroplasts for their action. This classification is likely to be applied to simply and rapidly identify the requirement of light and chlroplasts for the actions of chemicals, thereby it makes easy to characterize many new herbicides that their action mechanisms are unclear, and to elucidate the mode of action of them.
Plantlets derived from leaf blade-segment culture of a variegated tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. BY-4) that was induced by a heavy-ion ($^{14}N$) beam irradiation to proembryos, were characterized. When explants from both white and green sections of leaves of the variegated plant were cultured on MS medium containing 0.1 mg/L NAA and 1.0 mg/L BAP, the white sections yielded only white shoots, whereas the green sections generated approximately 47.2% green, 37.4% white and 15.4% variegated shoots. In the F1 generation of a green tobacco derived from the leaf blade-segment culture, the segregation ratio of green to white was 1,651:54. Furthermore, reciprocal crosses showed that all of the progenies was green, indicating that the variegation is not maternally inherited. When the signal intensity of photosynthesis genes was determined by DNA gel blot analysis using the variegated leaves derived from green sections of variegated leaves, there were more of the rbcL, psbA, 16S rDNA and 23S rDNA chloroplast genes in the white sections than the chloroplast genes in wild type and green sections of the variegated plants.

Slow seedling growth rate and nodulation failure of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) has been limited its good establishment to pastures. The experiment was done to determine the effect of removal of cotyledon and unifoliolate on the shoot, root growth, and nodule formation of 4 white clover cultivars for 8 weeks after the treatment. Four white clover cv. Regal (large leaf), Louisiana S-I (medium-large leaf), Grasslands Huia (mediumsmall leaf), and Aberystwyth S184 (small leaf), were grown in IOcm plastic pot containing 2:l:l soi1:sand:peat moss mixture until grown to cotyledon or unifoliolate stage and then removed one (Cl) or two cotyledons (C2) at cotyledon stage, and unifoliolate only (U), unifoliolate and one cotyledon (UCl) or unifoliolate and two cotyledons (UC2) at the unifoliolate stage, and the plants were sampled at 4, 6 and 8 weeks after the treatments. The intact plants had greater shoot and root dry weights, and no. of nodules than removal-treated ones. Removal treatments at cotyledon stage, the dry weight and no. of nodules more decreased in C1 and C2 than that of unifoliolate stage. While the severer cotyledon removal, the more reduction. Although the dry weights and no. of nodules steadily inclined with regrowing period, the former were higher in Regal and La. S-1 than in the others since 6 weeks after removal treatment but the latter was more in S 184 than in the others 8 weeks after removal treatment. Relationship between no. of nodules and shoot or root dry weight was analysed as linear mode while the earlier and severe removal, the steeper slope. It was concluded that severer damage of cotyledon and unifoliolate had detrimental effects on the shoot and root growth, nodule formation, and aftermath establishment of white clover.
This experiment was carried out to investigate the growth responses of white clover (Trifolium repens L.) as affected by prohexadione-calcium foliar application for the growth restraint in the lawn yard, field and golf course etc. The leaf length and leaf weight of white clover were significantly retarded compared to the untreated plot with foliar application of prohexadione-calcium after mowing within 1 day, and the effect was continued up to 50 days. The leaf area of clover with prohexadione-calcium treatment was to be narrowed as compared to untreated plot. The SPAD value of the leaf colour was increased in the treated plots and was to be continued for 40 days more. The coverage rate of clover was decreased with prohexadione-calcium foliar application after mowing in the lawn ground.
