Does the Bush Warbler (Cettia diphone) Defend Its Territory through a Particular Song Mode or a Mode Sequence? (텃새권 방어와 관련된 휘파람새의 Song Mode와 Mode Sequence의 이용)

  • The song of the bush warbler, Cettia diphone, consists of an introdudory whisde portion and a complex ending syllable portion. In bush warbiers, a song with two or fewer notes in the whistle portion is classified as an a song mode, while a song with three or more notes in the whistle portion as a $\beta$ song mode. Although some variations occur in mode seledion by individuals and populations, the proportion of a mode songs to total songs is 55% (range 51.6-58.7%) on average. The a mode has a higher dominant frequency in the whistle portion than does the $\beta$ mode, but the number of syllables m the complex ending syllable portion is fewer. Bush warbler mode sequences are defined as $\alpha$$\alpha$, $\alpha$$\beta$, $\beta$$\alpha$ and $\beta$$\beta$ mode sequences. In order to test the hypothesis that song modes and mode sequences play a role in the defence of territory in Jeju and Wando populations in the south-coastal geographic song variation group, playback experiments were executed. Mode sequences differed between naturally produced songs and songs produced in response to playback for two populations. In particular, for birds in the Wando populations our results indicate that the use of song modes may be affeded by habitat, singing site and type of territory, and further propose that particular mode sequences may play a more important role than song mode in vocal interadions.

Listening Decision Aid Simulator for Whistle Sound-Related Collision Accidents

  • This paper describes Listening Decision Aid Simulator (LDAS) to provide a decision-supporting tool that can reproduce real-like listening situations focused on the duty officer's two ears. The sound propagation mechanism from a whistle to listener's two ears is established at first, and the spatial transfer coefficients of a bridge door are measured at training vessel. Then, the construction works with the spatial transfer coefficients and its evaluation experiments with five collision accidents are carried out. As results from tests, the five cases can be judge by LDAS; it led to the insight of practical use of LDAS as one of the decision supporting system in collision accidents.

Acoustic Transfer Characteristics of Ship′s Bridge for Whistle Sound (기적음에 대한 선박 선교의 음향전달특성)

  • The paper describes measurement techniques for an acoustic transfer characteristic of ship's bridge stimulated by a whistle sound The response sounds, according to the opening-shutting conditions of bridge doors for Training Ship ‘SAENURI’, are measured by B&K 2260D equipment, and then the frequency responses are extracted by B&K 7830 software. To evaluate the measured transfer characteristic, the 128th order FIR (Finite Impulse Response) filters, containing the different frequency characteristics, are constructed based on the frequency sampling-based design method Using evaluation indexes with six scales, psychological assessments by five subjects are carried out with test sounds which are obtained from convolving the source signal with FIR filters. As results of tests, the test sounds gives $A_S$ 3.3∼4.7 which means the psychological sense of ‘it is almost similar sound as original ones in a real world’, and thus it is clearly seen that the proposed method can be used for the measurement of an acoustic transfer characteristic of ship’s bridge.

  • This paper describes Three-Dimensional Listening Simulation System (3D-LSS) which is to analyze whistle sound related marine casualties, and is to evaluate the accident situations using 3D sound by Head Related Transfer Function. At first, the three-dimensional listening model from the analysis of accident situations is proposed, and then the reproduction and evaluation methods of 3D sounds are also discussed. The system is designed to explain the accident situations and to simulate the possible situations with GUI based graphics and 3D sound reproduction. The evaluation experiments using 3D-LSS are carried out with six cases that did not known whether it is true or not the blast and listening of the whistle sound between two vessels. As results of psychological assessments by five subjects, the six cases can be analyzed clearly by visual images and audio sounds, thus the usability of 3D-LSS as one of the judgment assistant system of marine casualty is verified.

  • Cupid's bow, upper lip, columella, and ala of nose are esthetically important, in which their symmetrical plasties determine success or failure of the surgery in cleft lip and palate patients. Z-palsty and its modifications are simple and effective. The double Z-plasty is economical in surgical time and esthetics in reconstructing the cupid's bow compared with other methods. We report a 29-year-old male patient who represented reversed cupid's bow and whistle deformity after the primary repair of the cleft lip. He was corrected the cupid's bow using a double Z-plasty. The reversed cupid's bow was corrected to a normal shape and the whistle deformity disappeared. The tightness of the upper lip was relieved after the operation. The double Z-plasty was esthetically successful because the procedure was limited in the vermilion and did not produce a new scar on the skin. Furthermore, the lip tubercle became protuberant. The cupid's bow was symmetrically smoothly curved at 4 years after the operation. These results indicate that the double Z-plasty is simple, less traumatic to the surrounding tissues, and suitable for the correction of whistle deformity.

Investigation on Turbocharger Whine Noise in a Heavy-duty Diesel Engine (대형 디젤 엔진 터보차져 고주파 소음에 관한 연구)

  • Current diesel engines are usually equipped with turbochargers for improving fuel economy as well as meeting more stringent emission regulations. These turbochargers usually cause noise problems because they spins vey high such as 100,000 to 200,000 rpm, These noises are largely divided into whistle and whine noises. The frequency of whistle noise corresponds to their rotation speed, and the frequency of whine noise does to the multiplication of their rotation speed and the number of compressor blades. Turbocharger manufacturers developed a special type of compressor, effectively compressing air sucked from a duct; Recirculation Compressor Cover (RCC) or Map Width Enhancement (MWE). This special structure improves turbocharger's capability by expanding compressor's working area, but it seriously causes a noise problem, whine noise. There were many trials to surpress the noise occurred inside a compressor such as modification of a compressor, noise baffles or secondary measurements. However, it was currently concluded that the whine noise caused by the special compressor can not be reduced to that done by a standard compressor, and the strength difference of whine noises between the two compressors is not negligible. Thus, the standard compressor is decided to be applied to a newly developing heavy-duty diesel engine in order to resolve the turbocharger noise problem with a stiffened suction duct directly connected to a compressor.
