A Study on the Body Type of Wheelchair using disabled Women (휠체어 여성 장애인의 체형 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the physical characteristic by directly measuring the wheelchair using disabled women and to classify Body Type of a disabled person. The subjects were 103 disabled women of wheelchair used women and between 20 - 55 years of age The result of this study is as follow. 1. There was a remarkable difference in the physical characteristic of wheelchair using disabled women due to their cause of disability. The cause of disability was classified into the 4 groups; Poliomyelitis, Spiral Cord Injury, Muscular Dystrophy, Cerebral Palsy. 2. The result came out to be 4 factors by the factor analysis on the data of an anthropometric measurement to the wheelchair using disabled women and also cluster analyzing the factor scores, the experiment was concluded to 4 types. Type 1 came out to be a short height with the shortest legs. Type 2 was body shape which had a corpulent upper body and wide shoulder but with short and slim lower body. Type 3 has the shortest height, weak and lean upper body, small shoulders Type 4 has the largest stature and legs 3. Classification of body types of male wheelchair users (휠체어를 사용하는 성인 남성의 체형분류)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the physical characteristic of the wheelchair users by directly measuring the disabled men who use a wheelchair and to classify body types. The subjects were 178 male wheelchair users 20-69 years range of age. The results of this study were as follows. The cause of disability was classified into four groups; Poliomyelitis(P), Spinal Cord Injury(S), Cerebral Palsy(C), Amputee(A). There was a remarkable difference in the physical characteristic of the wheelchair users due to their cause of disability. A have greater values in all the dimensions. P have the largest drop values and smaller values in the lower body dimensions. S have greater values in the height of upper body trunk, back interscye length, and chest circumference, whereas smaller values in waist front length and thigh circumference. C have smaller values in most body dimensions except circumference of lower limb. By the factor analysis on the anthropometric data came out the result to be eight factors. The result of cluster analysis using factor scores shows the body types of wheelchair users can be divided into four body types; PY, RBB, TBP, RA. PY type is short and has the largest drop values, whereas RBB type tends to have the smallest drop values. TBP type is tall and the torso tends to be larger than those of the other types. RA type has smaller values in front body dimensions and moderate values in other dimensions. The diversity in body types should be considered among the wheelchair users.

Development of a Sizing System of Mass-customized Clothing for Wheelchair Users: Men's Suit Sizes (휠체어 장애인의 대량맞춤복을 위한 사이즈 체계 개발: 남성 정장 사이즈)

  • This study develops a sizing system of mass-customized male suits for wheelchair users. One hundred and three male wheelchair users' 21 anthropometric dimensions were measured to identify body shapes and develop a sizing system. The measured wheelchair users' body sizes were compared with the average body sizes of Korean males from the $6^{th}$ Korean Body Size Survey to understand the body size differences between two groups. As a result of body shape classification using the KS's Drop method, wheelchair user body shapes were classified into four shapes for upper-body (A: 32%, B: 26%, BB: 24%, and Y: 18%), and two shapes for lower-body (B: 70% and A: 30%). The upper-body of wheelchair users was relatively developed than Korean males; however, the lower-body was relatively stunted. The key dimensions of a sizing system were selected as chest circumference, waist circumference, and trunk length, outside leg length based on the correlation analysis between anthropometric measures. The top sizes were determined considering chest and waist circumferences for horizontal sizes, and additionally the trunk length was divided into short, medium, and long groups for vertical sizes. The bottom sizes were selected considering the waist and hip circumferences for horizontal sizes, and additionally their outside leg length was divided into short, medium, and long groups for vertical sizes.

A Study on the Upper Garment Sizing System for Disabled Men using Wheelchair - Compared study with the Sizing System of Germany - (휠체어를 사용하는 남성 장애인의 상의 사이즈체계에 관한 연구 - 독일의 휠체어 장애인 사이즈체계와 비교연구 -)

  • This study aims at establishing a sizing system required for producing ready-made clothes which can fit the body shape of disabled men using wheelchair. It measured the bodies of 178 adult men using wheelchair and compared the sizing system of German adult men using wheelchair (1984) with KS system(KS K0050, 2004) in order to establish standards of the sizing system. AS a result, in terms of classification of body shapes, KS system cover more types of disabled men's body shapes and especially, A types (Drop 15.6) showed the widest coverage with 32%. In classification of heights, the widest range of height was 170 cm, and Korean men's four sizes between 158 cm and 176 cm covers 88.2% of disabled men's body shape. For chest size, 91.1% of disabled men's chest sizes were included in seven sizes, which are 4 cm intervals between 88 cm and 112 cm with 100 cm standard. In consideration of the ranges of height and chest, the general sizes (A types; 11 sizes, B types; 3 sizes, Y types; 5 sizes) are selected to present the standardized measurements. Basic parts of the upper garment sizing system for disabled men using wheelchair were height-chest-waist size.

A Method for Identifying Human-generated Forces during an Extensor Thrust

  • Some wheelchair users with neuromuscular disorders experience involuntary extensor thrusts, which may cause injuries via impact with the wheelchair, cause the user to slide out of the wheelchair seat, and damage the wheelchair. Knowledge of the human-generated forces during an extensor thrust is of great importance in devising safer, more comfortable wheelchairs. This paper presents an efficient method for identifying human-generated forces during an extensor thrust. We used an inverse dynamic approach with a three-link human body model and a system for measuring human body motion. We developed an experimental system that determines the angular motion of each human body segment and the force at the footrest, which was used to overcome the mathematical indeterminacy of the problem. The proposed method was validated experimentally, illustrating the force-identification process during an extensor thrust.

  • In this paper, an omni wheel-based electric wheelchair is proposed that can achieve safe and convenient movement and can improve the convenience of living for mobility-impaired people who cannot move on their own. Generally, mobility-impaired people are afflicted with physical health issues such as pain and secondary body deformities because they often remain seated in wheelchairs for long periods of time. Hence, an electric wheelchair is required whose posture can be changed and whose size can be adjusted according to the user's body type. Such a wheelchair should also facilitate easy change of direction (even in a narrow space) for convenient movement. In this paper, an electric wheelchair featuring omni wheels is proposed that allows posture transformation and facilitates movement in a narrow space. It is believed that the proposed wheelchair can aid in enhancing the convenience of living for mobility-impaired people.

Poliomyelitis disability generally had a large horizontal area due to their strong upper body. People with spiral cord injury disability was shown to have the largest height, cervical height, waist back length, crotch length, knee length, The group of muscular dystrophy disabled people have the shortest length of body and also lean. The cebral palsy group of disabled people has an average length and height size body. A comparison of anthropometric measurements of wheelchair using disabled women with National Anthropometric Survey Korea(1997) was significant difference. People with poliomyelitis disability was shown to have a larger waist back length, neck point to breast point compared to normal women, but stature, crotch length was shorter compared to normal women. People with spiral cord injury disability had a similar in the vertical area. The group of muscular dystrophy and cebral palsy disabled people was short and smaller in general compared to a normal woman.

  • This research notes dramatic increase of wheelchair usage along with rapidly aging population and handicapped people in Korea. Differentiated from existing electronic wheelchairs, we invented an electronic wheelchair that is collapsible even when the battery is installed and a guardian can ride along with a patient, It is also easy to put in a small space such as car trunks. We simulated to wheelchair body for Stress, Strain, fatigue Analysis. Additionally, we improved stoic design to be preferable for patients. The model ensures there's neither abrupt acceleration nor sudden stop and lastly, is much cheaper than other imported models.

Development of Ultralight Composite Wheelchair Frame (초경량 복합재 의자차 차체 개발)

  • In this paper, we applied composite material of high specific stiffness and strength to the fabrication of a folding wheelchair frame for the replacement of conventional metal wheelchair frames. A one-body composite frame was designed and the finite element analysis was performed on this design. Some specimens of joint parts were manufactured and strength test was done. With the results of analysis and test, some modification was done and a prototype was produced.

  • According to the IIHS (Insurance Institute fur Highway Safety), side impacts are made up 30% of all accidents (reported 1998). In the case of auto accidents, head and neck injuries were most common as 58%, injuries to the body's trunk equaled 32%, and injuries to the abdomen were 21%. Therefore in this study, injury of wheelchair occupant in frontal and side impact of wheelchair loaded vehicle was analyzed using computer simulation method. The occupant was restrained at the rear of wheelchair by the lap belt. The detailed fixation and restrain conditions of the wheelchair occupant are referred to SAR J2249's recommendation. We estimated HIC(Head Injury Criteria) and HNIC (Head and Neck Injury Criteria) based on measured data.
