  • A study was conducted to find out the biological contamination of wells in Chon Ho Dong areas, Seoul, Korea from May 4, 1971 through May 18 1971. Coliform groups were detected by membrane filter method and general sanitary conditions were checked. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) 61 wells (81.3%) out of 75 wells showed the evidence of coliform group. In urban areas it is recommended to use disinfectants for wells pretty frequently. 2) The wells in native villages were less contaminated than those in new villages established by poor people from slum areas of Seoul. 9 out of 15 wells at Song Pa Dong, which is However, at Bang E Dong's new village, 19 out of 20 wells were contaminatd by coliform groups. 3) Coliform groups were positive at 57 out of 61 open wells, while only 4 out of 14 pumping wells showed the evidence of coliform groups. 4) 38 out of 40 poorly drained wells were contaminated, however, 13 out of 25 well drained wells were coliform organisms positive.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out the correlation between pumping rates and influential factors in the tube wells for irrigation through the analysis of various statistical data of the existing tube wells for irrigation and pumping tests. Statistical data of the existing tube wells for irrigation were collected from the authorities concerned, and pumping tests were carried out for twelve tube wells. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1. The drilled tube wells are the most useful among various tube wells in securing pumping rates. 2. The enlargement of well diameter or the improvement of pumping equipments is necessary in drilled tube wells with pumping rates more than 806 ㎥/day, and the adjustment of foot valves or the special control of pumping equipments is necessary in tube wells with pumping rates less than 300 ㎥/day. 3. The choking of aquifer and slits can be prevented by removing earth and sand piled in tube wells. 4. The increase of well loss and the destruction of aquifer can be prevented by determining the optimum pumping rates through the step draw down tests. 5. The thickness of gravel packing is rather thin in drilled tube tube wells. 6. High pamping rates can be gained by deepening the depth of tube wells in the place the ground water storage is abundant, the thickness of aquifer is thick. and the depth of tube wells is deep. 7. Higher pumping rates can be obtained by constructing tube wells in the place where the drawdown is little and the coefficient of transmissibility is large.

  • Mountain Wells are very important water source for the most of the climbers in Seoul area. But the facilities around the wells are not modernized to prevent from contamination of microorganism and the other pollutants. We focussed our intention on the detection of some harmful chemical ingredients and contaminants. A total of 58 wells were examined according to the Standard Methods(APHA) and the following results were obtained: 1) Among the examined 58 wells, only 10 wells were adequate to the drinking water standard, 2) 7.9mg of liberated $CO_2$ was found in the Tchun-Ho-Dong Mineral Well, 3) Chemically harmful ingredients were not found, 4) The Mountain Wells were contaminated by Coliform groups as many as 18 times than rural wells.

  • Analytical solutions have been derived to delineate the capture zone created by pumping wells for the remediation design of contaminated groundwater. These previous analytical solutions are often restricted to pumping wells only, specific well locations, a limited number of wells, and an isotropic aquifer. Analytical solution was developed to deal with arbitrarily located multi injection-pumping wells in an anisotropic homogeneous aquifer. The solution presented in this study provides a simple, easy method for determining tile complex flow field caused by multi injection-pumping wells at different rates, and will consequently be useful in pump-and-treat design.

  • A numerical investigation was performed to determine the effect of airfoil on the optimum flap height using NACA0015 Wells turbine. The five double flaps which have 0.5% difference were selected. A Navier-Stokes code, CFX-TASCflow, was used to calculate the flow field of the Wells turbine. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define the three dimension numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. This paper tries to disign the double flap of Wells turbine with the numerical analysis.

  • The aerodynamics of the Wells turbine has been studied using 3-d, unstructured mesh flow solver for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations. The basic feature of the Wells turbine is that even though the cyclic airflow produces oscillating axial forces on the airfoil blades, the tangential force on the rotor is always in the same direction. Geometry used to define 3-D numerical grid is based upon that of an experimental test rig. The 3-D Wells turbine model, consisting of approximate 220,000 cells is tested of four axial flow rates. In the calculations the angle of attack has been varied between 10˚ and 30˚ of blades, Representative results from each case are presented graphically andy analysed. It is concluded that this technique holds much promise for future development of Wells turbines.

  • Groundwater recharge rate was estimated by applying the groundwater level fluctuation method utilizing Theis (1937) approach with specific yield estimation technique of Shevenell (1996) and the temperature method using observed data from National Groundwater Observation Stations. Results based on analysis of water level observation data of 10 alluvium wells reveal that the recharge rates for 5 wells of Kum river area range 3.7~25.0% and those for 5 wells of Nakdong river area range 3.6~21.7%. Results obtained from the temperature method based on water temperature data indicated that the upward flow resulted from evapotranspiration is dominant for 4 wells of the Kum river area and 5 wells of the Nakdong river area. The other wells showed the downward flow which is related to groundwater recharge in these areas.
