  • The study on the migration of carbon in T23/T91 dissimilar metal welds for the boiler was conducted at $600^{\circ}C$ with an increase of aging time from 1 to 100 hrs. Following results were obtained. The heavily etched dark band tended to increase from a molten boundary owing to an increase of aging time, which leads to form hard (T91) and soft (T23) zones with different hardness. It was found that carbon was migrated from T23 area to T91 area due to different carbon activities. In addition, soft and hard zones were formed in regional area mainly resulted from carbide dissolutions and precipitates.

  • The feasibility for improving the cooling rates and mechanical properties of wet welding process is experimentally investigated by using new developed underwater wet electrodes and H.T. steel plates. Main results of this experimental study can be summarized as follows; 1) By shielding around weld arc surrounding, the cooling rates resulting from wet welds with developed electrodes on TMCP steel plates can be lower than of non-shielded wet welds. 2)A high quality of mechanical properties of wet welds on TMCP steel plates can be obtained with shielded weld arc surrounding.

  • Underwater wet arc welds were experimentally performed on 11mm thick KR-RA steel plate using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 4.0mm diameter, KSKR, KSKT, USBL, JPUW, UWEA and UWEB. From analysis of bead appearance, detachability of weld slag, spatter occurrence and arc stability, JPUW gives the best result, and UWEB is superior to KSKR and KSKT. By experimental result of hardness distribution on the weld bonds, UWEB weld has the narrowest bond structure which is probable condition to get the best mechanical properties of weld. UWEB and JPUW welds have more even hardness distribution across weld deposit and base metal. Upon polarization test to measure the respondency of corrosion, the electrode of UWEB shows the most excellent degree due to the low open circuit potential difference.

  • The objective of the review is to introduce the evaluation method of welding joint designs by using forces extracted from FE models. This evaluation method is currently being used for the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) project in the United States by request of the customer Engineer. The evaluation method was applied to critical joints connected by Fillet or Partial Joint Penetration (PJP) welds in car body structure for SEPTA project. The additional manual analysis is required based on the fact that Technical Specification in the United States requires the Contractor to apply Complete Joint Penetration (CJP) welds to all structural connections in Car body. However, in the car body design for Septa project there are some areas where CJP welds are not applied due to structural and manufacturing problems.

  • Continuous wave CO$_{2}$laser beam welding and formability of zinc coated steel shets were investigated. First, optimal welding condition could be obtained in but welding by using the data for heat input and welding velocity. The highest value of Erichsen test is 79.3% compare to that of base matel. Secondly, Formability of laser welds was investigated by using ball punch tester. Finally, the forming results of butt-welded sheets showed that the joing design was important to apply the laser welded blank in the automotive production.

  • This study evaluated relative hot cracking susceptibility of commercial aluminum alloy welds, and then suggested possible mechanisms operated in the weld fusion zone and in the heat affected zone based on the observed cracking morphologies, fractography and microstructural features. The fusion zone solidification cracking was found to be mainly due to a microsegregation of Cu, Si, and Mg in grain boundaries, while liquation cracking in the HAZ was by the incipient melting of the segregated grain boundaries and the consitutional liquation of large aging precipitates and intermetallic compounds in the partially melted zone adjacent to the fusion line which experienced a rapid thermal excursion during welding.

  • Residual stresses, which can be produced during the manufacturing process, play an important role in an industrial field. Residual stresses of structures by welding process are exerting negative effect on the fatigue behavior and safety of structure. Results from the elasto-plastic finite element analysis of the welds for a nuclear component, the residual stress distribution after welding. In this study, a finite element technique is developed to simulate the relaxation of the residual stresses due to the mechanical loads of welds.

  • In this paper, we present a ultrasonic speckle suppression method for centrifugal-casted stainless steel sample by computer simulations of a flaw enhancement algorithm. Because of their practical importance in welds, the ultrasonic signal obtained from heat-affected zone or welds are investigated for computer simulation. The results for computer simulation present the more enhanced flaw-visibility and speckle suppression than the compared two techniques.
