This paper shows the results of the development of a small size of digital type continuous and intermittent welding auto-carriage based on microprocessor (Intel 80196KC) for welding process with long welding line. The developed welding auto-carriage loads welding torch and tracks welding line. It is an automaton largely used for welding process with a lot of long welding lines such as shipbuilding and structure. Most traditional auto-carriages have been developed based on analog circuit for open loop control. So this analog circuit welding auto-carriage cannon control welding speed. Specially welding auto-carriage for intermittent welding condition is so complicated and has the low precision of control performance in welding distance and non-welding distance. The auto-carriage developed in this paper has the following characteristics: It has not only functions of traditional carriage but also functions such as pseudo-welding process of big iron structures, intermittent welding in order to limit heat for welding thin plates, crater treatment of the final step of welding, acceleration at the initial step of welding and deceleration in the final step of welding. The main control board of auto-carriage, power supply system and DC motor drive wee developed and manufactured. The welding speed and the welding distance of the developed auto-carriage are controlled accurately by feedback control using photo-sensor. Hardware and software robust against the heat and noise produced on the welding process are developed.
The combination of laser beam and electric arc sharing common weld pool has widely been investigated since the late seventies, but it is beginning of the industrial uses. Recently, laser-GMA hybrid welding process showed possibility to overcome the tight gap tolerance with improved productivity. The laser-arc hybrid welding process is inherently complex because it has three kinds of process parameters: arc welding, laser welding and hybrid welding parameters. In this study, the optimum range of the process parameters were determined by high speed image analysis which could unveil the welding phenomena in laser-arc hybrid welding. The laser-arc hybrid welding was applied for position welding from the flat position to the overhead position and the welding characteristics were investigated.
A genetic algorithm was applied to an arc welding process to determine near optimal settings of welding process parameters which produce good weld quality. This method searches for optimal settings of welding parameters through systematic experiments without a model between input and output variables. It has an advantage of being able to find optimal conditions with a fewer number of experiments than conventional full factorial design. A genetic algorithm was applied to optimization of weld bead geometry. In the optimization problem, the input variables were wire feed rate, welding voltage, and welding speed, root opening and the output variables were bead height, bead width, penetration and back bead width. The number of level for each input variable is 8, 16, 8 and 3, respectively. Therefore, according to the conventional full factorial design, in order to find the optimal welding conditions, 3,072 experiments must be performed. The genetic algorithm, however, found the near optimal welding conditions from less than 48 experiments.

In this study, an electric resistance dual-spot welding process using a copper electrode inserted in a heating electrode is suggested for the spot welding of AZ31 magnesium sheets. This spot-welding process involves two heating methods for welding at the interfacial zone between the magnesium sheets, one of which is the heating method by thermal conduction from the heating electrode heated by the welding current induced to the steel electrode, and the other heating method uses the electric resistance between the contacted surfaces of the two sheets by the welding current induced to the copper electrode. This welding process includes the welding variables, such as the current induced in the heating electrode and the copper electrode, and the outer diameters of the heating electrode. This is because the heat conducted from the heating electrode can be maintained at a higher temperature in the welding zone, which has a slow cooling effect on the nugget of the melted metal after the welding step. The pressure exerted during the pressing of the magnesium sheets by the heating electrode can be increased around the nugget zone at the spot-welding zone. Thus, it not only reduces the warping effect of the elastoplastic deformation of sheets, but also the corona bond can make it less prone to cracking at the welded zone, thereby reducing the number of nuggets expelled out of the corona bond. In conclusion, it was known that an electric resistance dual spot welding process using the copper electrode inserted in the heating electrode can improve the welding properties in the electric resistance spot welding process of AZ31 magnesium sheets.
The laser/arc hybrid welding process is a new process combining the laser beam and the arc as welding heat source. The laser beam and arc influence and assist one another. By application of hybrid welding, synergistic effects are achievable, and disadvantage of the respective processes can be compensated. The laser-arc hybrid welding process has good potential to extend the field of applications of laser technology, and provide significant improvements in weld quality and process efficiency in manufacturing applications. This review analyses the recent advances in the fundamental understanding of hybrid welding processes using the works of the data base of Web of Science (SCI-Expanded) since the 2000 year. The research activity on the hybrid welding has been become more actively since 2006, especially in China, presenting the most research papers in the world. Since the hybrid welding process was adopted in manufacturing of the automobile in Europe in the early of 2000's, its adopting is widely expanded in the field of manufacturing of automobile, ship building, steel construction and the other various industry. The hybrid welding process is expected to advance toward higher productivity, higher precision, higher reliability through the mixing of high power and flexible fiber laser or disk laser and digitalized pulsed arc source.
Since welding process for most pipelines with large diameter has been carried out by the manual process, automation of the welding process is necessary for the sake of consistent weld quality and improvement in productivity. Therefore the development of the optimized algorithm to decide the welding condition is an effective technique to prove the feasibility of interface standards and intelligent control technology to increase productivity and reduce the cost of system integration. In this study, the pipe welding experiment has been carried out using plused GMA welding process to select optimal welding condition. And necessary information in root-pass welding has been obtained by applying in the pipeline using the selected welding conditions through the welding experiment.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the optimal conditions for the spot welding process that mechanically connects the case of a cylindrical secondary battery and the negative tab. Methods: We use 33 factorial design to derive the optimal conditions for the spot welding process. The pulling strength, the cross-sectional area of nugget, and the shock test life are selected as response variables, which can represent the resistance welding quality. The input variables are selected as the welding time, welding voltage, and pressure, which are the controllable factors in the spot welding process. Results: The main effects of welding time and welding voltage and the interaction effect of welding time and welding voltage are significant. Conclusion: The optimal conditions for the spot welding process to mechanically join the negative electrode tab of the cylindrical secondary battery and the battery case are developed. The result shows that the pulling strength is increased by 44% compared to before improvement under optimal conditions.
The automatic arc welding is generally accepted as the preferred joining technique and commonly chosen for assembly of large metal structures such as in areas of automotive, aircraft and shipbuilding due to its joint strength, reliability, and low cost compared to other joint processes. Recently, several mathematical models have been developed and studied for control and monitoring welding quality, productivity, microstructure and weld properties in arc welding processes. This study indicates the prediction of process parameters for the expected welding quality with accordance to the adaptive GTA welding process. Furthermore, the mathematical models is also develop to aid the selection of an optimal welding process as the generation of process controls to predict the bead geometry as a function output parameters in the GTA welding process. The developed models through this study showed comparatively excellent predicted results, and will extend to other welding processes to integrate an optimized system for the robotic welding process.
