  • The purpose of this study is to develop the control technology of the welding distortion caused by Auto NG-GTA(Narrow Gap-GTA) welding process at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment. Heat input model for Auto NG-GTA welding process was established and verified by measuring temperature change and molten pool shape at the bead-on-plate weldment. With the heat input model developed, the effect of tension load on the welding distortion at the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment was evaluated using the thermo-elasto-plastic FE analysis. In accordance with FEA results, the angular distortion and transverse shrinkage sharply decreased with an increase in tension load. This result indicated that tensioning method was an effective countermeasure against the welding distortion of the STS 304 multi-pass butt weldment.

  • We have studied on welding dissimilar materials of Carbon steel SCP1-S by using laser beam. In this research we have performed some experiments to know the possibility of welding dissimilar materials using laser beam and magnetic fields by adjusting the power output of 35W laser. Other conditions of the experiments were as follows : the welding speed was varied in the range 10 m/min nitrogen gas was used as shield gas, the flow value of shield gas was ranged 10 L/min. In order to ascertain of the welded surface, we have done the tensile strength testing, the hardness testing and the microscope observation. As a result, we have found that tensile strength was the highest at the condition of the welding speed of 10mm/s, the flow value of 10 L/min, the gap of two materials 0, and the use of nitrogen gas. Above testings have also showed that the tensile strength was generally satisfactory since the penetration of welding was almost complete due to the thinness of the materials. In addition, the formation of the welded area was excellent when it had the highest tensile strength.

  • MPW(Magnetic Pulse Welding) is a technologies for welding of metals by means of repulsive force on account of the interaction between electro-magnetic field of coil and current induced in outer pipe. These MPW is one of the most useful welding process of welding ability of the dissimilar metal in which cylindrical materials, such as pipe, tube. As the quality of a weld joint is strongly influenced by process parameters during the welding process and the success of the welding to evaluated according to the leakage pressure. Generally, the process parameters is magnetic pressure, the gap between outer pipe and inner pipe, and the ratio of thickness to diameter of pipe(D/T) in MPW. Therefore, the goal of this study was to explain the effect of parameters on the weld joint leakage pressure. For these purposes, FFD(Fractional Factorial Design) were used for the experiment. The measured data were analyzed by regression analysis and verification experiments with random condition were conducted to confirm the suggested experimental model.

  • Formation of the weld defect, such as a blowhole and a pit in lap-jointed fillet arc welds has been a serious problem in arc welding of Zn-coated steel sheet. In this study, the relationship among welding conditions, welding materials and defect formation was investigated in order to minimize these defects in the CO₂ welds. In addition, the arc stability of the commercial welding wires was evaluated for revealing their effects on defect formation. Main conclusions obtained are as follows:1) There was no difference between shear tensile strength of the sound welds and that of the welds with blowholes whose diameters are less than 0.5mm. However, the welds with blowholes whose diameters are equal or larger than 0.5mm and pits exhibited tensile strength 10~20% and 30~40% lower than that of the sound welds respectively.2) The optimum welding condition to effectively prevent or reduce the weld defects formation are as follows:- The welding variables of 220A-23V-100cm/min and 120A-190V-30cm/min were recommended for minimizing the weld defects.- The gap between the two sheets at the lap-joint should be controlled to more than 0.2mm- Solid wire was less susceptible to the formation of the weld defects than the flux-cored wire.- The low welding current condition produced less weld defects than the hihg welding current condition.3) One of the reason why the amount of the defect was reduced at the low welding current was the gas discharging by the active agitation of the molten pool, due to an increasing in the number of the short circuit. • This paper describes an intelligent filler wire feeding device which can control 3- dimensional seam tracking and the filler wire speed by measuring the gap position and the joint gap width in laser welding. By means of visual sensor controlled filling the missing material into the joint gap and 3 dimensional seam tracking, lineup errors from manufacturing tolerances and the repeatability of lineup jigs and weld robot can be balanced and at an even seam quality which avoids weld defects. In this paper, we assessed weld quality in 2mm sheets of A16061 which had various gap width by using the intelligent filler wire feeding device.

  • Recently, as titanium and titanium alloys are being increasingly used in wide areas, there are on-going researches to obtain high quality weld zone. In particular, growing interest is being drawn to laser welding, which involves low heat input and large aspect ratio in various welding processes and can facilitate shield in atmospheric condition compared with electron beam welding. The first report covered the analysis of embrittlement by the bead color of weld zone through quantitative analysis of oxygen and nitrogen and measurement of hardness as basic experiment to apply laser welding to titanium. Results indicated that the element that affect embrittlement the most was nitrogen, and as embrittlement and oxygenation go on, bead color changed to silver, gold, brown, blue and gray. This study performed butt welding of pure titanium and STS304 by using 1kW CW Nd:YAG laser, and to find out basic physical properties, evaluated welding performance by laser output, welding speed, root gap and misalignment etc, and examined mechanical properties through tensile stress and Erichsen test. The reason particles of pure titanium welded metal and HAZ are greater than STS304 is because they are pure metal and do not include many impure elements that work as nuclei in case of resolidification, thus becoming coarse columnar crystals eventually. In addition, the reason STS304 requires more energy during welding than pure titanium is because the particle size of base metal is smaller.
