The direct strength method adopted by the AISI Standard and AS/NZS 4600 is an advanced design method meant to substitute the effective width method for the design of cold-formed steel structural members accounting for local instability of thin plate elements. It was proven that the design strength formula for the direct strength method could predict the ultimate strength of medium strength steel welded section compressive and flexural members with local buckling reasonably. This paper focuses on the modification of the direct strength formula for the application to high strength and high performance steel welded section columns which have the nominal yield stress higher than 460 MPa and undergo local buckling, overall buckling or their interaction. The resistance of high strength steel welded H and Box section columns calculated by the proposed direct strength formulae were validated by comparison with various compression test results, FE results, and predictions by existing specifications.

In this study, a series of fatigue tests was conducted to evaluate fatigue strength for the root gap difference with high strength steel with butt welded joints. A finite element analysis using effective notch stress method was also performed to compare effective notch factors each other with butt welded specimens made by copper backing. The results of fatigue tests were classified according to the root gap difference. Fatigue life of butt welded specimens is presented for determining the root gap of high strength steel with butt welded joints in terms of fatigue strength. Then effective notch stress was applied to interpret fatigue strength of butt welded specimen model which is reflected actual measured dimensions. As a result, fatigue strength of high strength steel with butt welded specimens is increased by root gap gets longer in length.
Stainless steel sheets are commonly used for vehicles such as the bus and the train. These are mainly fabricated by spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget. edge of the spot-welding. By the way, its fatigue strength is lower than base metal due to high stress concentration at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point. Especially, it is influenced by welding conditions as well as geometrical factors of spot welded joint. Therefore, it is not too much to say that structural rigidity and strength of spot-welded structures is decided by fatigue strength of spot welded lap joint. Thus, it is necessary to establish a reasonable and systematic long life design criterion for the spot-welded structure. In this study, numerical stress analysis was performed by using 3-dimensional finite element model on IB-type spot-welded lap joint of 304 stainless steel sheet under tension-shear load. Fatigue tests were also conducted on them having various thickness, joint angle, lapped length, and width of the plate. From the results, it was found that fatigue strength of IB-type spot-welded lap joints was influenced by its geometrical factors, however, could be systematically rearranged by maximum principal stress ({TEX}$σ_{1max}${/TEX}) at the nugget edge of the spot-welding point.
Variation of welded-joint hardness and tensile strength of a accelerated-cooled fine-grained ferritic-pearlitic steel with heat input was investigated. In a weld heat-affected zone, a softened zone was formed and it had lower hardness than that of a base metal. While the width of a softened zone increased continuously with an increase of heat input up to 100kJ/cm. the minimum hardness in a softned zone was almost constant after a continuos decrease up to 60KJ/cm. Because of a softened zone, the welded-joint was fractured in the HAZ and its maximum reduction of tensile strength was about 20%. Measured welded-joint tensile strength and calculated minimum tensile strength in a welded-joint was almost same, which means that the plastic restraint of a softened zone did not occur in this experiment. It is believed that as a softened zone width-to-specimen thickness ratio is as high as 2~6 in this experiment, the plastic restraint effect does not occur. Theoretical analysis shows that the plastic restraint effect occurs only when the ratio is below 0.5.

The plane bending corrosion fatigue test was performed on the welded zone between SM58 steel plate and SM41 steel plate jointed with submerged arc welding in the air and in the natural sea water with various conditions. The main results obtained from the test are summarized as follows: 1) The welded zone of the steel plates has the lowest impact strength and the highest electrode potential, but the hardness was mediate of SM58 base and SM41 base. 2) The cathodic protection of the welded zone was also effective for the plane bending corrosion fatigue, and the optimum protection potential of the welded zone was -1,000 mV SCE. 3) The corrosion fatigue strength under the various stress conditions of the steel plate could be estimated and also the require safety factors on the design could be obtained from the plane bending fatigue limit diagram.
The ultimate carrying capacity of axially loaded welded square box section members made of medium and high strength steels (nominal yield stresses varying from 345 MPa to 460 MPa), with large width-to-thickness ratios ranging from 35 to 70, is analyzed by finite element method (FEM). At the same time, the numerical results are compared with the predicted results using Direct Strength Method (DSM), modified DSM and Effective Yield Strength Method (EYSM). It shows that curve a, rather than curve b recommended in Code for design of steel structures GB50017-2003, should be used to check the local-overall interaction buckling strength of welded square section columns fabricated from medium and high strength steels when using DSM, modified DSM and EYSM. Despite all this, EYSM is conservative. Compared to EYSM and modified DSM, DSM provides a better prediction of the ultimate capacities of welded square box compression members with large width-thickness ratios over a wide range of width-thickness ratios, slenderness ratios and steel grades. However, for high strength steels (nominal yield strength greater than 460 MPa), the numerical and existent experimental results indicate that DSM overestimates the load-carrying capacities of the columns with width-thickness ratio smaller than 45 and slenderness ratio less than 80. Further, for the purpose of making it suitable for a wider scope, DSM has been modified (called proposed modified DSM). The proposed modified DSM is in excellent agreement with the numerical and existing experimental results.
The fatigue test was carried out to evaluate the fatigue characteristics of the accelerated cooled (ACC) TMCP steel and its welded joint. From this study, it was confirmed that ACC TMCP steel has higher fatigue strength than conventional steels. After welding, however, the fatigue strength of ACC TMCP steel was deteriorated associated with HAZ softening when weld reinforcement was removed. On the other hand, with weld reinforcement, there is no effect of HAZ softening on the fatigue strength of welded joint because it is strongly dependant on the detail weld geometry i.e., stress concentration factor. Accordingly the fatigue strength of actual welded joint increases with decreasing the stress concentration factor of welded joint, regardless of HAZ softening.
Currently, high strength steel is not used for steel bridges in Korea, except for the SM570 high strength steel in very isolated cases. The study aimed to promote the active adaptation of high strength steel for long-span steel bridges. Thus, the fatigue behavior of SM570 and POSTEN80 high strength steel was investigated. For the experimental study, the butt welded joints samples were manufactured. Likewise, regular amplitude tensile fatigue tests were conducted. Test results, e.g., location of fatigue cracks and their propagation were compared with the findings of other researchers. After analyzing the effects of fatigue strength, e.g., static tensile strength and plate thickness of base metal, basic data for fatigue design criteria of SM570 and POSTEN80 high strength steel were presented.
In order to obtain high bearing capacity and good ductility simultaneously, a structural column with hybrid normal and high strength steel (HNHSS) welded box section has been developed. Residual stress is an important factor that can influence the behaviour of a structural member in steel structures. Accordingly, the magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses in HNHSS welded box sections were investigated experimentally using the sectioning method. In this study, the following four box sections were tested: one normal strength steel (NSS) section, one high strength steel (HSS) section, and two HNHSS sections. Based on the experimental data from previous studies and the test results of this study, the effects of the width-to-thickness ratio of plate, yield strength of plate, and the plate thickness of the residual stresses of welded box sections were investigated in detail. A unified residual stress model for NSS, HSS and HNHSS welded box sections was proposed, and the corresponding simplified prediction equations for the maximum tensile residual stress ratio (${\sigma}_{rt}/f_y$) and average compressive residual stress ratio (${\sigma}_{rc}/f_y$) in the model were quantitatively established. The predicted magnitudes and distributions of residual stresses for four tested sections in this study by using the proposed residual stress model were compared with the experimental results, and the feasibility of this proposed model was shown to be in good agreement.
This study investigated the fatigue stength of non-load carrying cruciform welded joints, which was maunfactured using the SM570 and POSTEN80 high strengh steel. Factors such as fatigue strength, fatigue crack initiation and propagation, thickness effect, and the relatioinship between the static strength and the fatigue strength were examined and compared with previous fatigue testing results. Results showed that the fatigue strength of SM570 and POSTEN80 steel are higher than the grade represented on the design specification. It is also identified the size effect and the dependence of the static stength in a few cases.
