  • Currently knowledge of strain in welds has mainly been obtained from strain gaging method: that is directly attaching most of the material to the gage. The very few non-contact methods are still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. A method of study is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics of the spot welded zone which is used with 3-D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) system. This system employed the SGCC 1.2t which are mainly used for the steel plate such as automobile, structure, building material and electronic appliances.

  • The reflection and transmission of micropolar thermoelastic plane waves at the interface between an elastic solid and micropolar generalized thermoelastic solid is discussed. The interface boundary conditions obtained contain interface stiffness (normal stiffness and transverse stiffness). The expressions for the reflection and transmission coefficients which are the ratios of the amplitudes of reflected and transmitted waves to the amplitude of incident waves are obtained for normal force stiffness, transverse force stiffness and welded contact. Numerical calculations have been performed for amplitude ratios of various reflected and transmitted waves. The variations of amplitude ratios with angle of incident wave have been depicted graphically. It is found that the amplitude ratios of reflected and transmitted waves are affected by the stiffness, micropolarity and thermal distribution of the media.

  • In part 1. optimal process parameters such as thickness of stopper and welding time are achieved to produce high strength ISB(Inner Structured and Bonded) panels. Developed process is different from the usual resistance welding process in the number of points welded at a time. In part 2, Numerical modeling for this new process is proposed and the variation of contact area with respect to the gap of electrodes is studied through FE analyses, Besides, it is tried to figure out the welding nugget formation and proper distance between welding points. FE analytic results show that inner structures are melted more than skin plate, and current distribution between points to be welded can be controlled by distance welding points. Comparison of some FE analytic results with corresponding experimental results could confirm the validity of the proposed numerical modeling.

  • Currently the plates used for the various structures has a tendency to being slim to the degree of the sheet metal vis-a-vis the overall measurements of the structure, and the conditions of their usage and load have been getting diverse. As the structure material has been used more and more under the various conditions, the necessity of the strength analysis is to be required. While most of these methods are simply based on the strain gaging method; that is, directly attaching most of the material to the gage, using the non-contact method is still in the early stage. One of the non-contact methods is by the use of the laser that has high-level of the accuracy for the measurement, and this laser also has excellent characteristics on which many studies for its applications are focused throughout the many fields. Therefore, this dissertation is on the measurement of the strain caused by the characteristics of the TIG welded zone which is used with 3D ESPI system that is functionally modified through the laser ESPI system.

  • The dynamic explicit finite element method and the static implicit finite element method are applied effectively to analyze total auto-body panel stamping processes, which include the forming stage , the trimming stage and the spring-back stage.\The explicit time integration method has better merits in the forming stage including highly complicated three-dimensional contact conditions. On the contrary, the implicit time integration method is better for analyzing spring-back since the complicated contact conditions are removed and the computing time to get the final static state is short. In this work, brief descriptions of the formulation and the factor study are presented. Further, the simulated results for the total auto-body panel stamping processes are shown and discussed. The formability and the weld line movement in stamping with Tailor Welded Blanks were investigated through QTR-OTR-FRT.

  • The use of continuous welded rail is increasing because of its many advantages, including vibration reduction, enhanced driving stability, and maintenance cost savings. In this work, two different types of continuous welded rails were examined to determine the influence of repeated wheel-rail contact on the crystal structure, microstructure and mechanical properties of the rails. The crystal structure was determined by x-ray diffraction, and the microstructure was examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Tensile and microhardness tests were conducted to examine the mechanical behaviors of prepared specimens taken from different positions in the cross section of both newly manufactured rail and worn rail. Analysis revealed that both the new and worn rail had a mixed microstructure consisting of ferrite and pearlite. The specimens from the top position of each rail exhibited decreased lamella spacing of the pearlite and increased yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and hardness, as compared with those from other positions of the rail. It is thought that the enhanced mechanical property on the top position of the worn rail might be explained by a mixed effect resulting from a directional microstructure, the decreased lamella spacing of pearlite, and work hardening by the repeated wheel-rail contact stress.

  • A linearized model for hysteretic acoustic nonlinearity of imperfectly joined interface is proposed and analyzed by using Coulomb damping to investigate the characteristics of the reflection and transmission coefficients for harmonic waves at the contact interface. Closed crack is modeled as non welded interface that has nonlinear discontinuity condition in displacement across its boundary. Based on the hysteretic contact stiffness of the contact interface, the reflected and transmitted waves are determined by deriving the tractions on both sides of the interface in terms of the discontinuous displacements across the interface. It is found that the amplitudes of the reflected and transmitted waves are dependent on the frequency and the hysteretic stiffness. As the frequency of the incident wave increases, the higher reflection and lower transmission are obtained. It also shows that the hysteresis of the interface increases the reflection coefficient, but reduces the transmission coefficient. A fatigue crack is also made in aluminum specimen to demonstrate these characteristics of the reflection and transmission of contact interfaces.

  • Low cycle fatigue cracks are mainly detected at discontinuous welded locations with high stresses under repeated cyclic static loads due to cargo leading and unloading. Theoretical and analytical methods have been used for evaluation of local stress and strain which have an effect on a prediction of fatigue life, but those have difficulties of considering stress concentration at notched location and complicated material behavior of welded joint or heat affected zone. Electronic speckle pattern interferometry(ESPI) system is nondestructive and non-contact measurement system which can get the relatively accurate full field strain at critical positions such as welded zone and structural discontinuous location. In this study, local strain was measured on welded cruciform joint by ESPI system and then low cycle fatigue test was performed. Effect of local strain on low cycle fatigue life was examined by measured values using ESPI system. Moreover, experimental fatigue life was compared with established S-N curves using theoretical local strain and stress calculated by Neuber's rule.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) has been recently developed and widely used because it has the advantage of being able to measure surface deformations of engineering components and materials in industrial areas without contact. The speckle patterns formed with interference and scattering phenomena can measure not only the out-of-plane but also the in-plane deformations. Digital image equipment processes the information included in the speckle patterns and displays the consequent interferogram on a computer monitor. In this study, the experimental results of a canti-levered plate using ESPI were compared with those obtained from the simple beam theory. The ESPI results of the canti-levered plate, analyzed by 4-step phase shifting method, are close to the theoretical expectation. Similarly, out-of-plane displacements of a spot welded canti-levered plate were also measured by ESPI with 4-step phase shifting technique. The phase map of the spot welded canti-levered plate is quite different from that of the canti-levered plate without spot welding.

  • During ultrasonic welding, plastic deformation, elastic hysteresis, and friction generate heat at the contact portions of the two materials to be welded, theoretically analyzing and experimentally measuring the temperature at the welded part are very important for identifying the heat affected zone. However, the welding temperature during ultrasonic welding wherein welding is performed in less than a second is a challenge. We investigated the effects of welding conditions such as welding time, welding pressure, and the ultrasonic vibration amplitude of horns on the temperature of welded surface of a Ni sheet of thickness 0.1 mm. We used a horn with a resonance frequency of 40 kHz and an ultrasonic welder. The temperature was measured using a intrared sensor, and its characteristics were investigated. Experimental results showed that increase in welding time and pressure and ultrasonic vibration amplitude of horns generally caused the increase in surface temperature of the weld.
