Weldability in Nd:YAG Laser of Sintered Material Depend on Shielding Gases (보호가스에 따른 소결체의 Nd:YAG 레이저 용접성)

  • This study includes the effects of shielding gas types and flow rate on Nd:YAG Laser weldability of sintered material. The types of shielding gas were evaluated for He, Ar and N2. Bending strength, porosity rate, hardness and aspect ratio testing of laser weld are carried out to evaluated the weldability. As a results, Ar gas was showed the best welding strength even it has the most porosity content on weld metal, and depend on increases the gas flow rate, it was not only got deeper penetration depth but also showed higher bending strength. Therefore we could know that bending strength is not only affect the porosity content but also melting area.

  • Effectsof carbon content on the weldability of B-containing 620 grade high Cr ferritic cast steels were investigated. Cast steel with lower carbon content of 0.07% showed lower HAZ hardness because of the formation of lower carbon martensite in HAZ. It also showed less solidification cracking susceptibility in weld metal because of the formation of delta ferrite. However, hot ductility showed no difference between cast steels with lower and higher carbon contents. Cast steel with lower carbon content showed greater HAZ softening after PWHT in the region heated between AC1 and AC3 because of its higher base metal hardness.

  • In this paper resistance projection weldability of Zn coated steels with post treatment has been discussed. Projection welding was performed by a condenser discharge type power source which was equipped with welding parameter monitoring system. Mechanical test results indicated that the effect of post coatings on the projection front changed showing very small very small spattering at the weld strength was negligible. However, contamination rate of the block electrode varied depending on the post treatment coatings. Test results also showed that projection height before welding should be kept to be 80-100% of the specimen thickness as far as the surface quality was taken into consideration. Based on the high speed photography, discharge condition at the beginning stage of the welding process. It was considered that the spattering reduced the weld strength slightly at the optimum heat input range.

A Study on the Friction Weldability of Carbon Steel (SM45C) to Aluminum Alloy (A6063) (탄소h강(SM45C)과 알루미늄 합금(A6063)의 마찰용접성에 관한 연구)

  • This study deals with the friction weldability of machine structural carbon steel (SM45C) to Al-Mg-Si aluminium alloy (A6063). The bonding strength of friction welded joints, from all mechanical test, exceeded that of A6063 base metal, under the condition of friction time 1.5 sec, upset pressure 80MPa. The friction welded joints under these conditions exhibited tensile strength of 262MPa, bending angle of 90$^{\circ}$ without crack at weld interface and shear strength of 113MPa. Consequently, the friction weldability of SM4C to A6063 was very excellent, and that was possible without special preparation of weld surfaces.

  • Resistance spot weldability of coated steels for automobile applications was investigated. Test samples were prepared from commercial products of 0.8 mm in thickness. Based on the tensile-shear test, surface quality examination and cracking behavior, it was clear that aluminized steels showed good weldability. Microstructural inspection revealed that the coated materials was piled up at the split zone in the welding of aluminized steels. It was also demonstrated that no weld crack was found in the aluminized steel weld metal even the welding was carried out with higher current. However, through thickness cracks were detected at the weld metal of zinc coated steel. Small particles were found on the crack surface of zinc coated steel weld metal. It was thought that zinc vapor played key role to form the weld crack.

  • Low arc weldability of aluminum alloy is enhanced by applying variable polarity TIG and the result is theoretically investigated to figure out the mechanism. Conventionally, it is well known fact that DCEP (reverse polarity) arc is effective on aluminum welding. The reason is due to oxide layer removal by plasma ion bombardment and therefore it is named as cleaning effect. Another fact of polarity characteristic is that DCEN shows higher heat input efficiency therefore conventional variable polarity arc used to apply DCEP portion as small as possible. However, higher DCEP portion shows bigger weldment in this research and it is explained by adopting a theory of arc concentration on oxide layer with tunneling effect which was not clearly mentioned before in several variable polarity TIG welding research. Disagreement between variable polarity TIG welding result and conventional arc polarity theory is rationally explained for the first time with help of electron emission theory.

  • For the purpose of applying a hot-dip Zn-6mass%Al-3mass%Mg alloy coated steel sheet (ZAM) to automotive body materials, a laboratory study of the general properties required for inner and outer panels of automotive bodies was performed. Even with only light coating weight, ZAM showed an excellent corrosion resistance in terms of both cosmetic and perforation corrosion compared to the currently used materials for automotive bodies, GI70 and GA45. In our study, it was confirmed that ZAM exhibits as good as or better properties than GI70 in terms of spot weldability and press formability. Furthermore, since the same corrosion resistance can be achieved with less coating weight by applying ZAM, laser weldability is better than GI and GA.

  • Because of its high performance and accuracy, electron beam welding has an important role in industrial applications such as semi-conductor and LCD manufactures. Since its operation has been done in a vacuum room, it is very difficult to check out their weldability as well as the correct welding area of the specimen. In this study, a measurement system of the electron beam welding has been developed based on the 3-axis LVDT controlled table. In addition, the algorithm to tracking the welding line has been developed. Welded regions were measured by using an A-scan ultrasonic sensor only. Weldability of the aluminum specimen has been tested by newly developed measuring system. The results are compared with those by using an C-scan ultrasonic sensor, which show good agreements with each other.

  • The welding characteristics of polyethylene pipe for gas varying temperature and pressure is analyzed in this study. The analysis is very important to studying the weldability of PE pipe as well as is useful for its welding data. The specimens have the same welding conditions. Experimental data of the bead width, height and thickness for PE welding are measured with tool projector, Experimental results for PE welding Indicated that temperature more than pressure have influence on the weldability. It was confirmed that optimal PE welding within the limits of $210^{\circ}C$ and 15kg/$cm^2$ have high welding performance in comparison with other conditions. These results are very important to improve the safety and to reliable welding components of PE gas pipe.

  • The weldability and joint performance were evaluated for newly developed 60kg/mm$\^$2/ steel which had low cold cracking susceptibility. The main results obtained were as follows; In case of quenched and tempered 60kg/mm$\^$2/ steels, it was very effective to improve weldability and joint performance by lowering carbon and Pcm level. Very small addition of about 0.001 to 0.002wt% boron exhibited an appreciable compensation effect on strength which was decreased by lowering carbon and Pcm level. As a result, the newly developed steel was able to be welded without preheating and exhibited superior joint performance to conventional steels.
