  • Purpose: This study was carried out in an attempt to find weight control behaviors (BMI, experiences of weight control, weight control related factors, etc.) of college female students. Method: The subjects were 596 female students in 104 universities and colleges in Korea. Data was collected by using a questionnaire developed through a pretest. Result: Seventy five percent of subjects were in the normal range in weight, but 63.8% have experienced weight control behaviors and 58.9% have worried about their weight. Middle and high school was the first time to have concerns about their weight/body image. In addition, the influence towards weight control was mainly by mass communication. Weight control frequency in the most recent most year correlated with concern about weight, first time of weight control, maximum maintaining period of losing weight and BMI. Conclusion: To ensure resonable body image and weight control behaviors in women, education has to begin in elementary schools. In the case of weight control, scientific and systematic weight reduction programs should be developed.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine differences in weight control practices, beliefs, self-efficacy, and eating behaviors of weight class athletes according to weight control level. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Subjects were weight class athletes from colleges in Gyeong-gi Province. Subjects (n = 182) responded to a questionnaire assessing study variables by self-report, and data on 151 athletes were used for statistical analysis. Subjects were categorized into High vs. Normal Weight Loss (HWL, NWL) groups depending on weight control level. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANCOVA, x2-test, and multiple logistic regressions. RESULTS: Seventy-three percent of subjects were in the HWL group. The two groups showed significant differences in weight control practices such as frequency (P < 0.01), duration and magnitude of weight loss, methods, and satisfaction with weight control (P < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression showed that self-efficacy (OR: 0.846, 95% CI: 0.730, 0.980), eating behaviors during training period (OR: 1.285, 95% CI: 1.112, 1.485), and eating behaviors during the weight control period (OR: 0.731, 95% CI: 0.620, 0.863) were associated with weight control level. Compared to NWL athletes, HWL athletes agreed more strongly on the disadvantages of rapid weight loss (P < 0.05 - P < 0.01), perceived less confidence in controlling overeating after matches (P < 0.001), and making weight within their weight class (P < 0.05). HWL athletes showed more inappropriate eating behaviors than NWL athletes, especially during the weight control period (P < 0.05 - P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Self-efficacy was lower and eating behaviors during pre-competition period were more inadequate in HWL athletes. Education programs should include strategies to help athletes apply appropriate methods for weight control, increase self-efficacy, and adopt desirable eating behaviors.

  • This descriptive study was designed to identify the factors associated with weight control behaviors among 273 high school girls with normal body weight. The objectives of the study were ⅰ) to evaluate subjective obesity and satisfaction with the body shape, ⅱ) to describe the weight control behaviors and the motivation, ⅲ) to reveal the relationships between the weight control behaviors and BMI (Body Mass Index), iv) to investigate the relationships between the weight control behaviors and subjective obesity and satisfaction with the body shape, and v) to investigate the relationships between the weight control behaviors and family support. The results showed that 62.6% of the adolescent girls with normal weight perceived that they were fatty and 9.9% thought they were obese. Seventy-five percent of them were not satisfied with their body shape. Eighty percent of the participants reported the main motivation of weight control was to have an attractive appearance. In this study, self-reported weight control methods included dieting (64.8%, skipping or reducing meals), exercise (36.6%), and special dieting (20.1%) such as eating an increased amount of juice or vegetables. It was shown that the subjects who were not satisfied with their body shape and perceived themselves as fatty or obese were active in exercise, diet, and other special diets. Subjects who were on diets and special diets had a higher level of BMI than who were not on diet and special diet. Subjects who exercise had a lower level of BMI than who did not exercised. Family support was significantly related to exercise behavior. The research suggested that there is a increasing responsibility for school nurse to instruct on the body shape and weight control behaviors through health education and consultation. Also, the results suggested that it is important to develop proper diet and exercise methods for adolescents girls to maintain their weight and health.

  • Purpose: This study identified the effects of body weight control behaviors on bone mineral density (BMD) in Korean women aged 20 to 39 years. Methods: A secondary analysis of the 5th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was conducted. Asian-Pacific criteria of BMI (Body Mass Index) and BMD were calculated for 1,026 women selected. The effects of body weight control behaviors were assessed using binary multiple logistic regression analysis while controlling for BMI. Results: Osteopenia and osteoporosis rates were 32.8% and 2.0%, respectively. About 69% of women performed weight control behaviors, and a combination of diet/exercise (22.7%) and drug added methods (10.9%) for weight control. Women who performed both diet control and exercise had a lower possibility to have abnormal BMD than those who did not try weight control (OR=0.67, CI=0.45~0.98, p=.039). Further weight control behaviors did not influence abnormal BMD. Conclusion: Body weight control should include proper diet and exercise in accordance with each woman's BMI level.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify factors influencing the weight control behavior of female college students. Method: The subjects included female college students in the U City area, and data were collected through a self reported structured questionnaire from July 01 to 28 of 2017. Totally 220 subjects were analyzed. Analyses consisted of descriptive statistics, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation analysis, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The findings showed dissatisfaction of female college students' perceptions of their bodies based on BMI, body satisfaction and obesity stress, which had special impacts on their weight control behaviors. Weight control behaviors was closely influenced by obesity stress (${\beta}=.848$, p<.001) accounted for 48.7% of the weight control behaviors (F=71.97, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that it is necessary to develop and implement information programs and design appropriate prevention programs that can induce healthy weight control behaviors. Such programs should include health education, as well as intervention programs to identify such predictors and help college students judge and perceive positive body image so that they control their weight in a proper manner.

  • With the aim of diagnostic research on health education. the health promoting behaviors related to elementary school students' weight control. life satisfaction. health state. self-efficacy. parent's interest and knowledge about weight control and school health education of weight control were investigated on the basis of the PRECEDE model. The data for this study were collected from a sample at an elementary school in Chongju for 5 days in July. 2004. In analyzing the data. t-test. one-way ANOVA. chi-square test and multiple regression analysis were done by using SPSS 10.1 The results were as follows : 1. The elementary school students' level of life satisfaction was above half of the full point. The score difference of life satisfaction was statistically significant by grade and academic achievement(F=4.646. p=.010. F=16.042. p=.000). 2. The perceived level of health state was moderate for all students. Normal weight students' level was significantly higher than obese students' (t=3.667. p=.000). 3. The perceived level of health promoting behaviors related to weight control was above the moderate. The perceived level of health promoting behaviors related to weight control in the obese students was significantly higher than that in normal weight students(t=-2.225. p=.027). The students used computer for 1.48 hours and watched TV for 2.52 hours a day. 4. The score of health promoting behavior self-efficacy in this subject was 70.61. 5. The parents' level of interest in the obese students' weight control was significantly higher than that in the normal weight students(t=-4.86. p=.000). 6. Sixty-six percent of the students learned about weight control education in school. 7. The health promoting behavior self-efficacy among the educational diagnostic variables was the most influential variable in students' health promoting behaviors related to weight control. This research diagnosed the needs of weight control education in elementary school by assessing various factors related to weight control behaviors. The research findings suggest that we can enhance the prevention of childhood obesity by strengthening the related factors such as parents' knowledge and interest, health promoting behaviors and self-efficacy related to weight control in school health education.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare health locus of control with health-promoting behaviors according to elementary school children's degree of obesity, and to analyze correlations between two variables. Methods: Three hundreds and sixty three elementary school children were participated from three elementary schools in Seoul. Multidimensional Health Locus of Control (HLOC) scale and Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) were used. Results: Obese children was 16.8% of all research subjects. Internal HLOC in over weight group was higher than normal weight group (F=3.611, p=.014). Chance HLOC in under weight group was higher than other groups (F=3.553, p=.015). External HLOC in over weight and obesity group was higher than normal weight group (F=3.553, p=.015). Correlations between HLOC in internal and external and health-promoting behaviors were significant (r=.347, p<001; r=.207, p<001). Also, children who did not have siblings and have obese parents showed higher rate of obesity, and lack of sleeping time tend to be related to obesity. Conclusion: External HLOC of obesity children is higher than that of normal weight children. Meanwhile, obese children with higher internal HLOC were good at doing health-promoting behaviors. Therefore, if obese children are trained for internal health control, it can lead to their health-promoting behaviors.

  • Objectives: Self perceived body image among women is drawing a lot of attention in Korea due to their unhealthy weight control behaviors. To determine the relationship between self-perceived body image and dietary behaviors among Korean women, the discrepancy between actual body size and body image perception, weight control behaviors were assessed based on age groups using the 2010 KNHANES data. Methods: A total of 1,747 subjects were selected after eliminating those of likely changing their diet recently using the 2010 KNHANES data. The subjects were divided into 3 groups, self-underweight, self-normal, and self-obese according to their perception of body image. The BMI and weight control behaviors were assessed based on age groups according to the body image perception. Results: The younger, the higher ratio of underweight, women perceived their body size as normal or overweight. Exercise and reduced food intakes were dominant among various weight control methods but unhealthy methods were dominant among self perceived overweight group. Conclusions: Incorrect body image perception and unhealthy weight control behaviors can cause nutritional problems. Nutritional education should emphasize the importance of healthy weight and proper body image perception for Korean women.

  • This quantitative study was conducted to examine the relationship between weight control behaviors and disordered eating patterns in some university students. This study used a cross-sectional study design. A total of 347 students from three universities participated in this study (88 male and 259 female) Eating disorders were assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26); a score of =20 identifies individuals who likely have an eating disorder, including anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. A score for healthy dietary behaviors was obtained by self-assessment on a healthy diet scale (20-item questionnaire), and the severity of any state-trait anxiety was calculated by the state-trait anxiety inventory (40-item questionnaire). In the analyzed results, the percentage of participants with experience of weight control was 58% in male and 73% in female. The subjects with a high risk of an eating disorder (score of =20 of EAT-26) were 44.3% ($mean{\pm}S.D;\;18.9{\pm}13.4$) of the males, and 57.9% ($mean{\pm}S.D;\;23.2{\pm}11.6$) of the females. Higher Body Mass Index (BMI) was significantly related with an increased risk for an eating disorder in females, but not in males. In the group who had attempted weight control of all types, there was a severe risk of an eating disorder. Increased eating disorder risk was significantly related with weight control behaviors such as a higher number of attempts at weight control, having used medication, having experienced side effects, and having experienced disease for both sexes. Therefore, the results of this paper showed that detrimental behaviors of weight control are connected to an increased risk of eating disorders. Consequently, education regarding the correct, behaviors of weight control is necessary to prevent eating disorders in adolescents.
