The study was conducted to investigate the effect of weed interference and starter fertilizer on subsequent soybean seed quality at the Agricultural Research Farm and Laboratory of Razi University, Kermanshah, Iran. Two factorial experiment was laid-outon a randomized complete block design with four replications. First factor was starter fertilizer levels (0 and 25 kg $ha^{-1}$) applied in the forms of monoammonium phosphate, the second factor was different weed interference periods consisted of five initial weed-free periods (in which, plots were kept free of weeds for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60 days after crop emergence (DAE) and then weeds were allowed to grow until harvest) and five initial weed-infested periods (in which, weeds were allowed to grow for 0, 15, 30, 45 and 60DAE, after which the plots were kept free of weeds until harvest). Full season weedy condition reduced 100-seed weight, seed germination percentage and seedling dry weight by 25.9, 13.3 and 22.5%, respectively and increased mean germination time and seed electrical conductivity by 55.8 and 24.3%, respectively as compared with full season weed-free control. However, the traits under study were not significantly influenced when field was kept free of weeds for at least 45 DAE (R1) or weedy condition was continued for less than 30 DAE (V8). There was a significant and negative correlation between weed biomass and seed weight (r = -0.93), so that when weed free condition was less than 45 DAE or weed infested period was continued for at least 30 DAE, soybean plants produced wrinkled and underdeveloped seeds with lower weights and qualities. Moreover, soybean seed quality reduction due to weed interference was more evident when starter fertilizer was applied and weeds interfered with soybean from the beginning of the growing season. Information from the present study is beneficial in soybean seed production systems and where farmers use the harvested seeds for the following planting.
The seed dormancy is one of the peculiar characteristics of a number of weed species and it makes difficulties in weed control. To clarify the mechanism of seed dormancy, several chemicals such as $KNO_3$, KOH, thiourea, and $H_2O_2$ and phytohormone($GA_3$) were treated to dormant seeds. Among the species treated with several chemicals, the germination percentages of Setaria glauca, Ambrosia trifida and Ranunculus sceleratus were increased with $KNO_3$ and those of S. glauca, R sceleratus were increased with thiourea. Hydrogen peroxide promoted the germination of Setaria viridis and S. glauca. Germination percentages of S. viridis, S. glauca and Cyperus saraguinolentus were increased with enzyme treatment using pectinase. GA treatment enhanced the geim.ination of Eleusine indica and R sceleratus but the other species were affected slightly. Especially. E. indica showed linearity in the relationship between germination percentage and GA concentration. So, It seemed that E. indica can be used as a bioassy material for GA. Considering the phenological habits of weed species, the seeds were buried under soil for long time(more than 1 month) over winter. When seeds were buried in soil, the degree of dormancy was drastically decreased. Especially, germination of seeds buried were increased under alternating temperature. The germination rates of Persicaria ssp. and Chenopodium ssp. were increased by 50% order alternating temperature after burial for seven weeks.
In spite of simple and cheap cultivation method, water broadcast-seeded rice demonstrates uneven and unstable seedling establishment per unit land area and requires more herbicide and labor-input for weed control. Three experiments were conducted in a phytotron at 18$^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the adaptability of seed-mat mulching cultivation technologies in water seeded rice for the uniform seedling establishment and the inhibition of weed occurrence without herbicide application. Five different kinds of mat with different mesh sizes and fabric properties were tested. The emergence of rice was the highest in Lawn-mat treatment, being comparable with the control, in which seeds were sown without mat. The Lawn-mat also exhibited the lowest mat tension. Mat tension may influence the emergence of rice. And once it was soaked in water, it didn't maintain its original shape any more. The emergence rate of rice was the lowest in Safer-mat treatment. In Lawn-mat treatment, which was the most effective for rice emergence in the first study, the differences of emergence and seedling establishment of rice depending on the seeding position (upper, beneath, and between mats) treatments were negligible, while they were higher in dry seeds than in pre-germinated seeds treatment. The emergence as affected by the kinds of mat also showed the same trend when tested using barnyard grass. Depending on the kinds of mat, the inhibition effect of weeds was the greatest in Safer-mat and the poorest in Lawn-mat. These results strongly suggest the possibility that the uniform seedling establishment and weed management without chemical could be achieved simultaneously by seed-mat mulching through the combination of effective mat for the emergence of rice and another efficient mat for the inhibition of weed occurrence. This possibility was also tested in the field.
It is assumed to be an efficient method for keeping a germinability of weed seeds as long as possible, if a secondary dormancy is not induced by transferring the seeds of which dormancy was broken in wetting condition into drying condition. To investigate its validity, two experiments were carried out on seeds of 9 weed species ; to find out the most effective storage condition in breaking the dormancy of each weed species and to know whether there is a decrease in the germinability by transferring into drying storage condition. The dormancy of Chenopodium album and Stellaria aquatica was released well under the drying condition, but that of Echinochloa crus-galli var. oryzicola by soaking in water. Other weed species were released from dormancy by storage in wetting condition. When the seeds stored in the wetting or soaking condition, are air-dried and then restored at room or low temperature, a decreasing tendency of germinability which might cause a trouble in using them practically, was not observed except on the seeds of Persicaria vulgaris. In the case of Persicaria vulgaris, the low germination since 3 month-storage seemed not to be caused by drying, because a decrease of its germinability was observed with increasing storage period in all of the storage conditions. In contrast, high germination was induced as the seeds of Echinochloa crusgalli var. oryzicola, which were not germinated during the storage in low temperature and wetting condition, were transferred into the room temperature and drying condition. These results suggest that this approach can be one of the efficient methods for keeping a good germinability as long as possible in most weed seeds.
The experiment was conducted in 1992 to find out the approach to the development of prediction model of weed population in paddy fields. The weed seeds of 88% over were separated from the soil by using $K_2CO_3$ 50% solution with specific gravity 1.34. The weed seeds which were floated on the solution due to the difference of specific gravity between soil particles and the seeds were effectively withdrawn by using a vaccum pump attached with an aspirator. The seeds withdrawn together with solution were taken by filtering with a nylon net of $0.31{\times}0.16mm$ mesh. The pressing method was more efficient and practical for the viability test of weed seeds separated from the soil compared with the germination test and the TTC test. For the prediction of weed population by the number of weed seedlings emerged at the sampled soil, the sampling method of 0-10cm deep at 5-6 sites per field was applicable. At the prediction method by the number of seedlings emerged, the smaller the seed sizes, the lower the prediction coefficients of weed species. It was considered that the prediction method by the number of seedlings emerged was more practical than the prediction method by the number of seeds separated from sampled soil, in relation to similarities to weed population, time and expenses required for examining, technical difficulties and applicability of weed species.

As environmentally sound agriculture emphasize gradually as well as the importance of environment, many studies on weed and soil nematode control of new concept which does not affect adversely environment are in progress. For this purpose, plant seeds which are representative weed species in field were selected and treated with microwave having generating capacity of $17.73kw/m^3$, and investigated germination rates of weed seeds and the number of soil nematode according to soil moisture contents, soil depth and irradiation times. The microwave effect on the germination rates was extremely high in soil moisture content of 40% and irradiation time over 40 seconds for irradiation time, while soil depth did not affect germination rate. In view of the results so far achieved, it seems that universal dispersed microwave system is effective for the control of weed seeds.

Collated data from the 1995-1996 field surveys of weed seeds buried in the plough layer of peat soil in Selangor district were analysed to assess species-dominance and spatial pattern of distribution of weed seeds based on selected quantitative indices and index of dispersion. Forty five species within 14 families were recorded of which 24 were broadleaves, 12 grasses and 9 sedges. They comprised ca. 53.2, 31.2 and 15.6%, respectively based on total population counts. Total seed population was ca. $8.14{\times}10^7$ seeds/ha within the fast 25cm soil depth. Wide variabilities in population counts were registered among species ranging from < $7.0{\times}10^4$ seeds/ha for Amaranthus gracilis to ca. $5.64{\times}10^6$ seeds/ha for Heteropogon contortus. Seeds of Cleome rutidesperma was the most abundant(ca. $2.347{\times}10^7$ seeds/ha). Difference in seed population counts may be attributed to inherent variation in fecundity, population fluxes, their spatial distribution patterns and the agronomic practices prevailing in the areas of survey. The profile distribution of soil seed banks was skewed within the first 0 - 10cm depth, comprising ca. 69% of the total seed counts. Seed counts in the 10 - 15, 15 - 20 and 20 - 25cm soil profiles were in the order of 17.9, 8.6 and 4.0% of the total populations, respectively. Weed seeds of all species displayed different degree of aggregated pattern of distribution with variance-to-mean ratios of > 1 and Lloyd's mean crowding($m^*$) values from 1.244 for Cyperus iria, Phyllanthus debilis, Phyllanthus urinaria, Scirpus grosses and urinaria lagopodiodes to 9607.7 for Cleome rutidosperma. Lloyd's patch indices(Ip) ranging from 5.1 for Aeschynomene indica to 188.5 for Bracharia reptans were registered. Differences in the VMR, $m^*$ and Ip values among species suggested inter-alia inherent variabilities in their disposal capacity from seed source and different agronomic practices prevailing in the areas surveyed.
The experiment was conducted to study the growth, developmental pattern, and seed production of Commelina benghalensis L. grown from four seed types; large and small aerial seeds, and large and small underground seeds. Plants from the four seed types differed in growth rate. Based on dry weight and leaf area, plants from large underground seeds emerged and grew faster in the first 2-4 weeks after seeding(WAS) but plants from small aerial seeds grew faster during the 4-6 WAS; thereafter, there was no significant difference in growth rate among plants from the four seed types. Based on seed production, plants from large aerial seed produced more seeds(1473) than those from small seeds(1006). Small aerial types represented 75-77% of the total seed production, large aerial seed 21-23%; only 2-4% were underground seeds. The results suggest that the plants from large underground seeds might have better competitive ability Than those of small aerial seeds during the early growth stage due to faster germination and higher dry matter production.
This study was carried to know factors affecting emergence of major upland weeds in soil in order to get basic information on weed control methods. Firthy eight percent of weed seeds were distributed within soil surface to 10cm in soil and 2% of weed seeds were observed in 40~50cm soil layer in field. As planting depth was deeper, emergence of weeds became poor. However Capsella bursa-pastoris can emerge at soil surface. Amaranthus retroflexus, Amaranthus lividus, Porturaca oleracea, Chenopodium album, Solanum nigrum upto 3cm, Eleusine indica, Echinochloa crus-galli, Setaria viridis, Digitaria sanguinalis upto 7cm. Emergence of weeds was very poor in very acid soil but good in soil pH 5.5~6.0. However emergence of weed was not affected by pH 3.5~4.0 or above. Emergence of E. indica, C. bursa-pastoris, A. retroflexus, A. lividus, C. album, E. crus-galli, Solanum nigrum, and S. viridis was good in loam soil and P. oleranea, D. sanguinalis in sandy loam soil. Emergence of weed seeds was not affected by fertilization.
Herbicides are important weed control tools for increasing crop yields and the efficiency of crop production. As the use of herbicides increases, the occurrrence of herbicide-resistant weeds has been an increaing problem. In Korea, since the first occurrence of acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitor resistant Monochoria korsakowii was reported in the Seosan reclaimed paddy field in 1998, resistance has been reported in 14 weed species, including Echinochola spp. and their populations are gradually increasing. The objective of this study is to investigate the nationwide occurrence of ALS and Acetyl-CoA Carboylase inhibitor resistant Echinochloa spp. in Korea. In 2013, 2014, and 2015, we collected 594 accessions of Echinochloa spp. in Korean rice fields except for Jeonnam and Chungbuk provinces. They were then treated with the recommended rates of penoxsulam and cyhalofop-butyl. We harvested seeds from 45 accessions of E. oryzicola in the case of cyhalofop-butyl treatment. Also, 44 and 46 accessions of E. oryzicola and E. crus-galli survived and their seeds were harvested after penoxsulam treatment. Twenty accessions of E. oryzicola survived from both herbicides inferring possible multiple resistance. Two accessions out of 20 inferred from possible multiple resistance survived after cyhalofop-butyl treatment at a dose of $500ga.i.ha^{-1}$. Seeds of herbicide resistant populations will be provided and utilized for further research.
