A Semiotic Approach to Korean Ceremonial Dress -Focusing on Wedding Dress in Choson Dynasty (한국의례복식의 기호학적 분석(1) -조선시대 혼례복식을 중심으로-)

  • This article aims, by analyzing structurally the codification of dress sign in Korean society, the signifying system of the codes and their message communicated, to make clear a signifying structure that would be codified through the relationship between abstract concepts and real condition of dress. I used the semiotic theory of Ferdinand de Saussure′s conception on structuralismly the codification, cultural semiology of Roland Barthes and Myung-Sook Han′s formula of dress structure as tools analyse may objective of wedding dress of folks in Choson Dynasty, which has been successive our traditional Korean wedding dress. My results of the study are : The procedure of wedding ceremony in Choson Dynasty was presented in texts like Juga-garye, Sarye-peonram and Kukjo-orye, its dress system has been more emphasized on language, and aspect of social system, than parole, one of individual realization. In addition, the meanings of marrage such as "Oneness of bride and bridegroom", "Mixture of two sexes", "Blessing of good luck", were included in the signified like the style, pattern and color of the wedding dress, and specially, pattern and color, the articulated morphemes, was emphasized, When we combinated terms of dress in Choson Dynasty with syntagmatic, regarding their list as paradigmatic, it will signify a wedding dress, and according to combinating ways, it amy be divided as sign of dresses of bride and bridgeroom by sex or king, gentry and common people by class.   • Recently people are trying to lead their life with meaning and value, and people are oriented to value consumption as the values they pursue can be realized through consumption. Consumer demand on value consumption had an effect on Korean wedding culture and 'value consumption wedding culture' which emphasizes the value of marriage, is on the rise as a new wedding custom. Accordingly, Korean wedding market is more segmented and diversified for individual customization to create value. Especially, wedding dress evidently reflects the tendency of value consumption as it gives special meaning for brides. As a result, suggestion and development of detailed design elements of wedding dress to meet the various needs of customers are needed. Therefore, this study has the purpose of investigating the required value of wedding dress aligned with the characteristics of value consumption wedding culture through in-depth interviews and how the intrinsic value of consumers is shown up to a particular design element through investigating on the relationships between design elements. In addition, the study provides a direction for specialized and high-valued wedding dress design development by suggesting wedding dress design aligned with the new trend based on the analysis of detailed design elements that reflects the value.

A wedding dress design that applies the traditional dang-ui (당의(唐衣)를 활용한 웨딩드레스 디자인)

  • The aim of this study is to develop new wedding dress designs by blending the traditional female Korean upper garment of Han-bok, known as dang-ui, with Western-style wedding dress designs. For this research, the author considered the various types of wedding dresses and their historical development based on literary resources and previous studies of the subject. The results are as follows: first, this study featured the use of different types of fabric for the dang-ui, selected from the various fabrics available for wedding dresses. Starting from the basic design of a sleeveless and strapless princess-line tight top, three different styles of A-line dresses were created: a tiered long dress, an unbalanced tiered midi dress, and a spangled and pleated mini dress. The study also resulted in a tight H-line mini dress with a bustle. In this way, the author was able to suggest new wedding dress styles that are well suited to the cultural trend of the Korean wave. Second, the traditional Korean dang-ui is an elegant ceremonial garment that harmonizes well with Western-style wedding dresses. Satisfaction can be found from combining these creative fusion gowns with traditional Korean aesthetics. Third, the traditional Korean ceremonial coronet jokduri and veil, which go well with dang-ui wedding dresses, are suitable accessories for contemporary wedding dresses. The dang-ui wedding dress, a result of merging the Korean dang-ui and the Western style, will help enhance business for both the Korean and the international wedding industry thanks to an aesthetic that has global appeal.

A Study of Adapting Women's Pyoeui of Chosun Era to Wedding Dress (조선시대 여자표의를 활용한 혼례복 디자인개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to present adapting Korean aesthetics to the design of Wedding dress. For this study. Chosun Women's Pyoeui(coat) were considered. Pyoeui had the courtesy and variety. They were Jugeui, Wonsam, Hwalos, Dangeui, and Jangeui. Pyoeui were considered the formative features and the aesthetical values describing Shape, Color, Material, Pattern, and Ornament. And Pyoeui were considered the instances which were adapted their formative features to Wedding dress. The formative features appearing on Wedding dress were merely applied the outward shape. Therefore it will be necessary to understand the outward features and the aesthetical values about Women's Pyoeui for adapting Wedding dress. And then the continuous attempt is needed to adapt Korean aesthetics to the design of Wedding dress.

  • The purpose of this study was to present adapting Korean beauty to the design of Wedding dress. For this study, Chosun Men's Pyoeui(coat) were considered first. Pyoeui had the courtesy and variety. They were Jobog, Danryeong. Chulrlk, Dabho, Jangeui, Aegjueumpo, Jigryeong, Changeui, Changos, Jungchimag, Hagchangeui, Simeui, Dopo, and Durumagi. Pyoeui were considered the formative features and the costume beauty describing Shape, Color, Material, Pattern. and Ornament. And Pyoeui were considered the instances which were adapted their formative features to Wedding dress. The formative features appearing on Wedding dress were merely applied the outward shape. A Study on Visual Sensibility of Wedding Dress (웨딩드레스에 대한 시각적 감성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the visual sensibility of wedding dress. There are 28 kinds of costume samples from photographs in wedding dress magazines. They were divided into simple, accent and decorative design. The Semantic Differential method was used in this study to measure them. The semantic scale was composed of 20 pairs of adjective words. The data were analyzed by factor analysis, ANOVA, MDS and regression analysis. The results are as follow; 1. Factor analysis has extracted five factors which consist of the visual sensibility of wedding dress. The factors are High quality, Cuteness, Femininity, Decoration and Modernness. 2. There were significant differences in the visual sensibility of wedding dress and demographics.3. The evaluative dimensions of the visual sensibility of wedding dress were identified by Cute-Adult and Simple-Decorative. 4. Preference was related to what are wearing-desirable, chic, cute, natural and beautiful, etc., and the wearing desire was related to what are favorite, lively, chic, special and gracious, etc. The noble sensibility was related to what are elegant, cute, feminine and chic, etc.

Analysis of Wedding Behavior of Chinese Women in their 20's to 30's in Shanghai and Neighboring Cities (중국 상해 및 상해 인근도시에 거주하는 20-30대 여성의 웨딩행동 분석)

  • Nowadays, global wedding dress companies are interested in the Chinese wedding market because of expectations in consumption patterns of the post 80's generation. Therefore, wedding behavior, selection criteria for wedding dresses, and favored image by segmented groups targeting 20's to 30's Chinese women were studied to help the Korean wedding dress industry to establish their business in China. The survey was conducted in Shanghai city and three neighboring cities-Wuxi, Zhengziang, and Hangzhou-, and the primary data were analyzed using the SPSS program. As results, Chinese women thought that the wedding ceremony should be elegant and dignified, and they wanted to choose their favorite style rather than a recommended style. The criteria of selection were classified into four factors. Overall image and well fitting with their face and body were the most important factors in the selection of wedding dress. The most favored image was unique/novel image. Several favored images for their wedding dress were significantly different by occasion (ceremony day and photo shoot day) and education level. People of higher education level preferred more luxurious and classic image during the ceremony, and a classic and gorgeous image on the photo shoot day. A white dress and a colored dress for weddings were favored more than the Chinese traditional dress on both occasions. There was also a significant difference between general consumers and the wedding business employees in the quantity of wanted wedding dress.

It has been put on the head dress with ceremonial dress Juckui(적의) . And, take out of the veil by another mother, before the hapkun(합근) ceremony. also. common people has been put on the head dress with ceremonial dress Youmui(염의). And. take out of the veil by another mother. before the hapkun(합근) ceremony. also common people has been put on the Mongsuui(몽수의,장의). head dress with ceremonial dress round neck dress. And, take out of the veil by another mother, before the hapkun(합근) ceremony.

A Study of Preference about Wedding Dress Design according to Body Shape for Adult Women (성인 여성의 체형 특성에 따른 웨딩드레스 디자인 선호도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to preview artistic presentation, factors of designing and ornamentation, to provide useful information to the wedding dress industry in developing consumer-oriented design of wedding dress. Also, this study is to investigate relativity between individual characteristics, such as demographic character and body figures, and preference of consumers, in order to learn if there is any pattern of consumers decision making, and to help consumers by giving tips for their wedding dress shopping. According to this study, I can see that when modern South-Korean adult women choose their wedding dress, they consider many factors just like silhouette, detail, fabric material and so on, then they select their own best dress by grasping their body characteristics.

Correlationship with Wedding Dress Image Preference and Self Image of Female University Students (여대생들의 웨딩드레스 이미지 선호도와 자아이미지)

  • In this paper. the focus is laid on identifying preferred wedding dress image and its co-relationship with self image of female university students. the biggest potential customer group in the industry. As for the research method. it conducted both review of literature and empirical research method. Through the former approach, four main research questions were derived : 1) What is the preferred wedding dress image of female university students\ulcorner 2) What is the relationship between real self-image and preferred wedding dress image\ulcorner and 3) that between ideal self-image and preferred wedding dress image\ulcorner 4)What is the relationship between the consistency level of the two self-images and preferred wedding dress image\ulcorner In the empirical mode of research, 404 surveys were counted in the final analysis among 450 questionnaires completed by female undergraduate students in Seoul and Chun-an city. Collected data analyzed using factor analysis. frequency analysis. descriptive analysis. scheffe test. multiple-regression analysis and t-test. Results are as follows: first, the sophisticated image was most preferred among female students, followed by elegant splendor. lovable and chaste, feminine and decorative, and characteristic and sexy image. This result indicates how wedding dress trend has a keen sensibility to general fashion trend just like the trend of outfits for everyday life. Secondly, the research results indicated consistent level of co-relationship among the real and ideal self-image and the preference of wedding dress image. And the last the level of consistence between the ideal self-image and the real self-image directly related to the preference level of wedding dress image, showing almost no significance.
