  • The curved blocks which compose the bow and stem of a ship contain many skewed joints that are inclined horizontally and vertically. Most of these joints have a large fitness error and are continuously changing their form and are not easily accessible. The welding position and parameter values should be appropriately set in correspondence to the shape and the inclination of the joints. The welding parameters such as current, voltage, travel speed, and melting rate, are related to each other and their values must be in a specific limited range for the sound welding. These correlations and the ranges are dependent up on the kind and size of wire, shielding gas, joint shape and fitness. To determine these relationships, extensive welding experiments were performed. The experimental data were processed using several information processing technologies. The regression method was used to determine the relationship between current voltage, and deposition rate. When a joint is inclined, the weld bead should be confined to a the limited size, inorder to avoid undercut as well as overlap due to flowing down of molten metal by gravity. The dependency of the limited weld size which is defined as the critical deposited area on various factors such as the horizontally and vertically inclined angle of the joint, skewed angle of the joint, up or down welding direction and weaving was investigated through a number of welding experiments. On the basis of this result, an ANN system was developed to estimate the critical deposited area. The ANN system consists of a 4 layer structure and uses an error back propagation learning algorithm. The estimated values of the ANN were validated using experimental values.

  • The convolution code(CC) of code rate 1/2 as a forward error correction (FEC) in Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (QPSK) is applied to decrease bit error rate (BER) by background noise and multipath in shallow water acoustic channel. Ratio of transmitting signal bandwidth to channel coherence bandwidth is defined as frequency selectivity index. BER and bit energy-to-noise ratio gain of transmitted signal according to frequency selectivity index are evaluated. In the results of indoor water tank experiment, BER is well matched theoretical results at frequency selectivity index less than about 1.0. And bit energy-to-noise ratio gain is also matched theoretical value of 5 dB. BER is effectively decreased at frequency selective multipath channel with frequency selectivity index higher than 1.0. But bit energy-to-noise ratio greater than a certain size in terms of CC weaving is effective in reducing bit errors. In the results, the defined frequency selectivity index in this study could be applied to evaluate a performance of CC in multipath channel. Also it could effectively reduced BER in a low speed underwater acoustic communication system without an equalizer.

  • In order to improve traffic flow and vehicular safety, installation of roundabouts is encouraging recently. Roundabouts are generally installed at which traffic flow and pedestrian flow is relatively low intersections. Roundabouts reduce vehicle speed, minimize vehicle weaving, and reduce critical conflict points. For these reasons, roundabouts are generally operated unprotected pedestrian crosswalk, thus a shortcoming for pedestrian safety always exists at roundabouts. The purpose of this study is developing a dynamic signal metering algorithm for traffic and pedestrian at four-way-approach with two-lane roundabouts in which three different operation algorithms(fixed-time pedestrian, vehicle signal metering, and vehicle and pedestrian signal metering) are suggested and its performance is tested by using VISSIM. The results of the fixed pedestrian signal operation show that there is a big average delay increase in general and that increases up to 51.4 seconds/vehicle(42.5%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,800 vehicle/hour. However, the results of the simultaneous dynamic signal metering operation for the vehicle and pedestrian crossing with push button show that there is a substantial average delay reduction up to 40.6 seconds/vehicle(42.7%) when the total number of approaching vehicle is 3,000 vehicle/hour.

  • Vehicles experience changes in driving behavior due to the various facilities on the freeway. These sections may cause repetitive traffic congestion when the traffic volume increases, so safety issues may be raised. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to perform microscopic traffic analysis on these sections using drone images and to identify the causes of traffic problems. In the case of drone image, since trajectory data of individual vehicles can be obtained, empirical analysis of driving behavior is possible. The analysis section of this study was selected as the weaving section of Pangyo IC and the sag section of Seohae Bridge. First, the trajectory data was extracted through the drone image. And the microscopic traffic analysis performed on the speed, density, acceleration, and lane change through cell-unit analysis using Generalized definition method. This analysis results can be used as a basic study to identify the cause of the problem section in the freeway. Through this, we aim to improve the efficiency and convenience of traffic analysis.

  • Currently, various types of TDM (Transportation Demand Management) policies are being studied and implemented in an attempt to overcome the limitations of supply oriented policies. In this context, this paper addressed issues of effectiveness and possible domestic implementation of the HOT lane. The possible site of implementation selected for this simulation study is part of the Kyung-bu freeway, where a dedicated bus lane is currently being operated. Minimum length of distance required in between interchanges and access points of the HOT lane for vehicles to safely enter and exit the lane, and traffic management policies for effectively managing the weaving traffic trying to enter and exit the HOT lane were presented. A 5.2km section of freeway from Ki-heuing IC to Suwon IC and a 8.3km section from Hak-uei JC to Pan-gyo JC have been selected as possible sites of implementation for the HOT lane, in which congestion occurs regularly due to the high level of travel demand. VISSIM simulation program has been used to analyze the effects of the HOT lane under the assumption that one-lane HOT lane has been put into operation in these sections and that the lane change rate were in between 5% to 30%. The results of each possible scenario have proven that overall travel speed on the general lanes have increased as well by 1.57~2.62km/h after the implementation of the HOT lane. It is meaningful that this study could serve as a basic reference data for possible follow-up studies on the HOT lane as one effective method of TDM policies. Considering that the bus travel rate would continue increase and assuming the improvement in travel speed on general lanes, similar case study can be implemented where gaps between buses on bus lane are available, as a possible alternative of efficient bus lane management policies.
